Grain Finishing Of Beef Cattle Grazing Dry Pasture Or Stubble, D J. Barker Jan 1971

Grain Finishing Of Beef Cattle Grazing Dry Pasture Or Stubble, D J. Barker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WHEAT quotas, poor wool prices and the availability of cheap grain on the farm have stimulated interest in grain finishing of cattle for out-of-season beef production. For many years, Animals turned off in the autumn-winter period have brought better prices than those sold in summer, at the end of the pasture flush.

Feeding grain supplements to cattle on dry pasture or stubble requires less capital than feedlotting and saves the cost of handling and processing roughage.

This article gives the essentials for grain supplementation of dry pasture or stubble but warns that grain finishing is unlikely to be profitable outside …

Feedlots For Beef In W.A. : Some Guiding Principles, D J. Barker Jan 1971

Feedlots For Beef In W.A. : Some Guiding Principles, D J. Barker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FEEDLOTS are small enclosures where all of the animal's feed is supplied from an outside source. Compared with grazing, feedlotting is an expensive method of beef production.

This article gives a guide to the requirements for establishment and management of a farm feedlot, especially the basic equipment and materials, the type of cattle most suited to feedlotting, rations and feeding techniques.

The author warns that skill and experience are needed to run a feedlot and describes feedlotting as an expensive method of beef raising when compared with grazing.

Further details are available from the author

When Is A Cattle Feedlot Profitable?, J T. Stoate Jan 1971

When Is A Cattle Feedlot Profitable?, J T. Stoate

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE current surge of interest in feedlots stems from low coarse grain prices and comparatively low early summer baby beef prices. Cattle raisers sense the opportunity for higher prices by holding the cattle on the farm over summer and autumn, and grain producers see better returns from barley and oats fed to cattle than sold as grain.

This article examines the profitability of cattle feedlots and presents sample budgets for two typical situations—the farmer who produces his own cattle but buys grain, and the cereal grower who produces grain but buys in cattle for finishing in a feedlot.

A ready …

Director Of Agriculture Retires, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In the June, 1934, issue of the Journal of Agriculture appeared an article entitled "A modified rotation for the wheat belt", by T. C. Dunne and F. L. Shier, which advocated a new rotation of pasture, fallow and cereals to replace the crop-fallow rotation generally used at that time.

Dr. Dunne retired on May 8 after 45 years' service to the Department of Agriculture. He had been Director of Agriculture for more than 10 years.

Vocational Agricultural Curriculum Study In Utah County, Loren J. Phillips May 1970

Vocational Agricultural Curriculum Study In Utah County, Loren J. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A questionnaire containing 69 curriculum areas for a vocational agricultural program in Utah County, Utah, and a proposed rating scale was mailed to 720 students who had graduated in vocational agriculture from eight high schools; to 14 agricultural teachers, and to 22 secondary school administrators and supervisors from Utah County; and to 28 other agricultural teachers selected at random in the state. Each person was asked to evaluate each curriculum area according to four suggested rating values: no value, has value, recommended, or essential.

The rating from each respondent was tabulated for each curriculum area by total points by numerical …

Evaluating Economic Efficiency By Relative Price Analysis (Feed, Livestock And Product Sectors), J. Y. Chen, J. B. Hassler Apr 1970

Evaluating Economic Efficiency By Relative Price Analysis (Feed, Livestock And Product Sectors), J. Y. Chen, J. B. Hassler

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The specific objective of this research is to delineate efficient and inefficient economic performance areas and thereby locate the more significant problem aspects for research and program attention. Specific price analyses will be used to evaluate the price interrelationships for functional efficiency in the dimensions of space, form and time. Not only the efficient aspects of production and marketing will be indicated by the analyses but the inefficient aspects of economic performance will be stressed also. This research will provide some foundational information for making decisions, both public and private. Moreover, it will direct the attention of researchers or program …

Growth In Weight Of Selected Organs, Tissues And Systems In The Pig, William J. Loeffel, Robert M. Koch Feb 1970

Growth In Weight Of Selected Organs, Tissues And Systems In The Pig, William J. Loeffel, Robert M. Koch

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

As a result of investigations at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in 1929, 1930 and 1931 to determine the effect of weight and degree of fatness of the pork carcass upon the quality and palatability of the meat, 40 pigs were slaughtered, five each at the approximate live weights of 70, 80, 90, 100, 115, 135, 160, and 180 kg. This corresponds to carcass weights ranging from 50 to 150 kg. The results of the meat investigations and feedlot data were reported elsewhere (Loeffel et al.,1943). This study reports data relative to the weight of selected tissues and organs, as …

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley Jan 1970

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of chemical additives on the fermentation pattern and subsequent feeding value of corn silage was investigated over a two year period. Corn plants harvested in August 1967 (Experiment I) were ensiled with no additive, 3.50 per cent area, or urea-mineral mix supplying an equal amount of urea. Those harvested in August 1968 (Experiment II) were ensiled with no additive, 0.50 per cent urea, or 0.75 per cent urea. The nutritive value of these silages was evaluated chemically and by lactation trials.

:he addition of urea alone, or in combination with minerals elevated the initial pH and buffered against …

Supplementing Calves With Tallow : Results Of A Trial At Wokalup Research Station, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1970

Supplementing Calves With Tallow : Results Of A Trial At Wokalup Research Station, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE removal of butterfat from milk by separation, reduces the energy content of the milk by about 50 per cent., and must slow the growth of calves unless extra energy is provided from some other source.

In the dairying districts of Western Australia, there has been considerable interest in recent years in the addition of homogenised tallow to skim milk to provide extra energy.

Good calves have been produced by this means.

Carrying Prime Lambs Through Summer, R J. Suiter Jan 1970

Carrying Prime Lambs Through Summer, R J. Suiter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The annual lamb glut in September- October has caused many farmers to show interest in feed lotting and other methods of carrying over prime lambs for a higher priced market.

Unfortunately however, little information has been available on the necessary techniques under Western Australian conditions.

This report presents the results of the first year of a trial being conducted at Chapman Research Station to examine some of the problems associated with carrying lambs through the summer for later marketing.
