Factors That Affect African-American Enrollment In Urban Agricultural Degree Programs In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Thomas Earl Tracy Apr 1999

Factors That Affect African-American Enrollment In Urban Agricultural Degree Programs In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Thomas Earl Tracy

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to determine reasons why few African Americans are in leadership positions in the urban agriculture industry. The lack of leaders will probably continue because there is a dearth of African Americans enrolled in agriculture programs at colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Six research questions guided the study in its endeavor to determine perceptions about the urban agriculture industry. Data were collected through surveys and interviews. A background questionnaire, developed by the researcher collected data on age, academic interests, urban background, exposure to agriculture occupations, and factors that affected selection of college …

G99-1375 Lilacs, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Todd Morrisey Jan 1999

G99-1375 Lilacs, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Todd Morrisey

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses lilac species, propagation, culture and pests.

Lilacs are among the most versatile shrubs grown in Nebraska. They come in various shapes, sizes, flower types and flower colors. Time of flowering also varies with species and cultivars. Lilacs can be used statewide for wind screens, hedges, accent plants or strictly for flower beauty and fragrance. Their drought and winter hardiness makes them easy to grow. They can survive, even when neglected, but perform better with care. Good soil drainage and full sun exposure are essential for optimal performance.

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger Jan 1999

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger

SDSU Extension Circulars

The budgets in this publication are based on approved farming practices and nutritionally balanced rations. Feed ingredients are priced on their comparative feed values. Com is used as the base for feed grain and other grains are priced based on their relative feed value to com. Alfalfa hay is used as the base for roughage. All roughage and succulents are priced as a percent of alfalfa hay. The livestock husbandman who uses the least-cost rations should not see significant changes in profitability by interchanging feed ingredients.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In order to determine the fertility of soil and nutritional status of strawberry plants grown in the districts of Anamur and silifke, 24 soil and 37 plant samples were collected and analysed. According to the results, 33% of Anamur soils showed high salinity. However, almost all the soils from Silifke showed a non-saline character. Organic matter deficiency was detected in 25% and 67% of the soils of Anamur and silifke, respectively. Approximately 10% of soils in Anamur showed nitrogen deficiency. Both of the districts have suffered available P deficiency, but it is more serious in Silifke. In Anamur, K deficiency …

G99-1390 Altering Swine Manure By Diet Modification, Duane Reese, Richard K. Koelsch Jan 1999

G99-1390 Altering Swine Manure By Diet Modification, Duane Reese, Richard K. Koelsch

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explores options for altering the nitrogen and phosphorus content of swine manure.

There are situations in which it is necessary to change the nutrient content and/or the odor-producing potential of swine manure in order for pork production to thrive. For example, current Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) permit procedures for livestock facilities require producers to document that sufficient land is available for crop use of the nitrogen (N) in manure. If sufficient land is not available for managing nutrients in manure, producers can alter the nitrogen and phosphorus content of swine manure by modifying the pig's diet. …
