Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is a cone-bearing species with outstanding nutritious seeds, health-supporting properties, and nut oil. Currently, the main volume of pine nuts is harvested in natural forests, which causes damage to ecosystems. The best solution to this problem would be harvesting nuts on special pine nut plantations established on the basis of high-seeding clones. However, it is hampered by the low efficiency of the existing methods for assessing plus-tree productivity. This work focused on cone analysis in two sites used for plus-tree selection: a 42-year-old sparse forest plantation and a 186-224-year-old closed natural forest. The …

Human body needs sufficient quantity of protein on daily basis for the normal functioning. Dietary protein in sufficient quantity is becoming a key issue for huge population of the world particularly in developing countries. Present investigation aimed to explore the phenotypic variation and to investigate the genomic regions associated with seed protein contents in Turkish common bean germplasm collected from 19 provinces. Field experiments were conducted according to augmented block design at two locations (Bolu and Sivas) for two consecutive years (2017 and 2018). Analysis of variance revealed highly significant environmental effects (p < 0.05) on seed protein contents within environments, while genotype by environment interaction revealed nonsignificant effects. Overall mean protein contents were 36.36%, while Balikesir-3 and Hakkari-38 yielded minimum (31.64%) and maximum (40.70%) protein contents. Among 19 provinces, accessions from Hakkari and Erzincan provinces disclosed maximum and minimum mean protein contents respectively. Scatter plot between seed protein contents and plant height divided the accessions according to their protein contents and plant height. A total of eight stable accessions were selected and can be recommended for future breeding activities. The implemented constellation plot separated the studied germplasm into two populations on the basis of their protein contents. Genotyping by sequencing resulted 7900 DArTseq markers was used for marker-trait association and a total of 11 markers showed significant association for protein contents. During this study, DArT-3365703 marker was identified in both locations (Sivas and Bolu) during 2017 and might be used for future common bean breeding. Physical map revealed the presence narrow regions between identified markers on Pv02 and Pv05. Therefore, these regions should be considered for future breeding activities. We are confident that results of present study will be helpful for marker-assisted breeding of common bean.

Comparative Study Of Phenolic Compounds In Olive Oils From Differentgeographic Regions, Şeyma Şi̇şi̇k Oğraş
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In this study, the effect of cultivar, harvest year, and the geographic regions (Mediterranean, Aegean, Southeastern Anatolia, Marmara, and the Black Sea) on phenolic compounds of virgin olive oils were investigated. Tyrosol was the major phenolic compound in the Mediterranean, Southeastern, and Black Sea regions. Hydroxytyrosol showed the highest value (2.07 mg/kg) in the Southeastern Anatolia region and the lowest value (0.75 mg/kg) in the Marmara region. Among the phenolic acids, vanillic acid had an important place in phenolic compounds (p < 0.01). This phenolic acid gave higher values in the Marmara region compared to other regions. Flavonoids were determined as important groups of phenolic compounds in olive oils. The oils from the Southeastern Anatolia region separated from other oils with the highest levels of flavonoids such as quercetin, luteolin, and apigenin. All phenolic compounds, except transcinnamic acid and quercetin, increased in the second harvest year. Vanillic acid was the highest phenolic compound in the first year, in contrast, tyrosol had higher values than vanillic acid in the second year. Many phenolic compounds were affected by olive cultivar. Memecik has a higher content of tyrosol, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and quercetin in the Aegean region. However, this variety showed higher values for hydroxytyrosol, transcinnamic acid, luteolin, and apigenin in the Marmara region. Gemlik, Ayvalık, Çelebi, Domat and Memecik from Marmara regions had higher vanillic acid. Butko, Otur and Kızıl Satı showed higher tyrosol. Principal component analysis showed that phenolic compounds could play an important role in the separation of regions and cultivars.

Agricultural reform movements proliferated in seventeenth-century Europe. For many who sought to make farming more economically productive, the practices of chymistry offered a way to accomplish these goals. Placed in the context of the development of a “vegetable philosophy,” or a theory of generation and growth across mineralogical and botanical domains, this article examines the application of chymical techniques in the attempt to enhance wheat seeds through seed-steeping and “fructifying” experiments among seventeenth-century agricultural reformers, particularly in England. I focus on three main sources: instructional husbandry manuals describing how to create “fructifying waters” to fertilize these seeds, the writings of …

Environmental Weed Risk Assessments
Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris). Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) is a perennial grass forming tufted tussocks to 1m which is native to large parts of Africa, Arabian Peninsula, western Asia, Middle East and the Indian sub-continent (Humphreys 1967). Seedheads form a dense, hairy cylindrical spike, with straw-coloured burrs or fascicles comprising 1-4 spikelets which are light …

Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Vigna unguiculata (cowpea). Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) originates from West Africa (Cook et al. 2020) with an additional centre of genetic diversity in Southern India (Krishna 2014). Ba et al. (2004) found that domesticated cowpea showed a high genetic variability. Combined with high morphological diversity this has resulted in a complex taxonomy which has been reviewed …

Root Exudates Impact Plant Performance Under Abiotic Stress, Yen Ning Chai, Daniel P. Schachtman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plant root exudates serve pivotal roles in supporting plant development and interactions with the physicochemical and biological factors in the rhizosphere. Under stress conditions, root exudation is involved in enhancing plant resource-use efficiency and facilitating the crosstalk between plant and soil microbes to ameliorate stress. Although there are a large number of root exudates that remain to be characterized, recent technological advancements have allowed for the function of many exudate compounds to be elucidated. In this review, we discuss current knowledge about the key root exudates that modulate plant resource-use efficiency under various abiotic stresses including drought, aluminum toxicity, phosphorus, …

Land-use planning on and near airports should consider possible revenue from land covers, associated maintenance costs, and potential for land covers to attract vertebrate species recognized as hazardous to aviation safety. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has expressed interest in recent attention given to industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.; hemp) as a revenue-producing land cover that might be cultivated on or near airports. Our purpose was to better understand the potential production value of hemp as well as its possible role in affecting aviation safety if cultivated on or near airports. Our objectives were to: (1) review the literature …
