Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli
Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Present methods for the production of leather from animal hides still depend from the most part on the use of natural tannin extracts. During the year, 1952, the amount of natural tannin extracts used by the leather industry was 560,452,119 pounds as compared to 35,793,000 pounds of synthetic tanning materials. It is not as yet possible to produce synthetic materials as economically as the natural extracts; the result being that there is still a very great demand for natural tannin extracts. The need for finding new domestic sources of tannins is apparent when the amounts of domestic and imported extracts …
Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Measurements of growth, to be meaningful, must be taken of various parts of the body, at regular intervals, under standardized environmental conditions, from birth through the growth span of the animal. From these measurements skeletal growth standards may be prepared for the several ages. Such standards can be used to measure growth at any age period. They will serve the research worker as a guide for experimental procedure and will provide the livestock raiser a basis with which his animals may be compared. Present standards of growth for dairy cattle are based mostly upon live weight, although considerable data are …

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs
Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Management Practices And Crop Yields On The Lower Yellowstone Project--1949, Rex D. Helfinstine
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Irrigation has been proposed for more than a million acres of land in North Dakota and South Dakota under the Pick-Sloan plan. What results have been obtained from irrigation of comparable areas? What were the experiences of farmers in these areas? The Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project in western North Dakota and eastern Montana, which has been under irrigation since 1909, is comparable in many respects to the areas proposed for new irrigation. Knowledge of the results of irrigation on the Lower Yellowstone will be helpful in determining the economic justification for irrigating other areas in the Dakotas. The purpose of …

Introduction
This study involves conceptual analysis in a broad interpretation of the term of a public administration problem situation embracing cultural, as well as politico-economic factors. A program ot action is recommended in considerable detail, calling tor the settlement of colonists to develop agriculturally a large amount of Bolivian land that promises to become, with proper husbandry, highly productive.
The author is a Bolivian agricultural economist who is making public administration his career, with particular emphasis upon the efficient utilization or land--and manpower, which for sometime past in his native country has been poorly organized and under employed. During the …
Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers
Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Artificial insemination should be used for turkeys when results from natural matings are unsatisfactory. There is no hard and fast fertility rule to follow and each breeder will have his own basis of appraisal for the different varieties of turkeys. But one can say that when fertility drops below 65 per cent it is time to take action.

"Confidentially, this long-haired stuff is not for me. I don't really know a thing about music, and I can't carry a tune in a bushel basket." With this pessimistic statement, many of us close the door to a whole new world of enjoyment. It does seem confusing when we hear people conversing in longhandled terms about symphonies, sonatas, oratorios, writing styles, and the like. Immediately, we become frightened by their apparent knowledge of music. Don't be misled by that big talk, which may even be done just to impress you. Knowledge of those terms doesn't mean that they enjoy music …

An Economic Evaluation Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine Prior To Slaughter, Douglas C. Strong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Animal feeding rations have long included carbohydrates as a primary constituent. Grains are included in most animal fattening rations, and the by-products of sugar beets have been used f or many years in livestock feeding (Kutish 1950 b). The use of molasses in commercial feed mixes in 1899 made possible its extended use in animal feeding practices (Hall 1950).

Today fussy, proper parties are definitely out of style. Truly "smart" people just won't take the time to spend their precious leisure moments "putting on the dog". When one studies the kind of home architecture and appliances, and the casual clothing that "sell" and the types of recreation that are popular he soon realizes that simplicity and naturalness are the modern keynote for leisure time living. It suggests a search for an antidote to the strain and tension that involves most of us-in this business of "making a living". The front doors on most of our homes swing inward. This …

Gross income is total income (subject to tax) before any expenses are deducted. If at least two-thirds of your gross income is from farming and your business year starts January 1, you have two choices. Either, (a) File your …
A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek
A Market News Service For Livestock Auctions In South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Auction sales are an important marketing medium for livestock in this country today. This method of selling is not a new or a novel one. The selling of livestock through auctions was probably adapted from Great Britain, and first used in this country in the early nineteenth century. These sales were most often held to dispose of imported and domestic breeding stock. The first regularly scheduled auction sale with publicly consigned merchandise was established at Union, Iowa, in 1904. From this beginning the number of livestock auctions increased, especially after 1930, This increase was particularly rapid in the twelve Western …

After you have selected the best phonograph that you can afford, preferably one with three speeds (78 rpm, 45 rpm, and 33½ rpm), you are ready to begin your home record library. Long-playing records withstand rougher treatment than do the 78's, are easier to store, and will play up to thirty-two minutes per side without interruptions. They're not literally "unbreakable," but they are tough.

SDSU Extension Circulars
Facts regarding farm accidents are scarce. A suggestion was made by the state safety director, Carroll Stinson, to the agricultural engineering department that a newspaper clipping survey be made to determine in what areas an educational program might best be developed to cut down on the occupational hazards of modern agriculture. One hundred fourteen of the 185 weekly and eight of the 12 daily papers cooperated in making this survey. Agricultural engineering students clipped out accident reports each week from these papers from November 1, 1952 through October 31, 1953. This survey was restricted to on-the-farm accidents except those accidents …
Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson
Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Feeding poultry for profit involves essentially the use of top quality stock, proper management and care, proper facilities, and last, but certainly not least important, a good feed. The feed accounts for well over 50 per cent of the cost of poultry, meat and egg production, hence its importance cannot be considered lightly. A good feed supplies all of the essential nutrients in the required amounts for each type of production.

Dairy cows, in order to make milk in large quantities, must be supplied with liberal amounts of the raw material from which milk can be made. That means good feed. The average production of South Dakota milk cows for the year 1952 was 4170 pounds of milk and 156 pounds of butterfat. Much of this relativ~ly low production is due to poor feed and lack of enough feed. Production and feed records shown in Table IV - page 25 reveal that one way to get increased production is to give the cows more feed. Feed is the greatest single item …

Factors That Contribute To Success Of Selected Farm Ownership Borrowers In Utah, Grey M. Jensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Farming is a complex business. Financial success in farming is influenced by the organization and operation of the farm unit. The principal problem confronting farmers is knowing how to manage the resources to attain maximum income over a period of time. Combinations of resources involve problems relative to crops, livestock, machinery, labor, capital, credit, and many others. An attempt has been made in this study to measure the results of different combinations and operation of resources and to determine their association with financial success of the farm.

On January 1, 1952, 50,000 head of cattle were on feed for slaughter in the state of Utah (6). This was an increase over previous years. The average number of cattle on feed for slaughter January 1st during the 1948-52 period was 45,000 head. This number was 30 percent larger than the average number on feed during the 1943-47 period. As shown in figure 1, the number of cattle on feed has fluctuated from year to year. The years with the least number of cattle on feed were those in the early thirties during the depression and drought. Since 1936 …
