G78-417 Leptospirosis Of Domestic Animals, Donald B. Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Leptospirosis of domestic animals is a very complex disease. This NebGuide examines its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Introduction
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease of animals and man caused by a spiral-shaped organism (spirochete) of the genus Leptospira. The important serotypes recognized in livestock in the United States include Leptospira pomona, L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L. grippotyphosa and L. hardjo. These organisms have a wide host range, including man. Among domestic animals, swine, cattle, dogs, and horses are most frequently affected. Known wildlife hosts include many of the small rodents, raccoons, foxes, opossums, skunks, deer, and moose.

G78-389 Nutrient Requirements Of Breeding Beef Cattle, James A. Gosey, Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The major nutrient requirements as listed in Tables 1a and b are modifications of similar tables published by the National Research Council, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle, fifth edition. They have been (1) rearranged to emphasize "English" weights rather than metric; (2) modified so that daily nutrient requirements and the nutrient concentration recommendations are in closer agreement and (3) expanded to include estimated requirements for pregnant yearling heifers of heavier weight and 2 year old heifer nursing calves.

Performance Of A Diurnally Tracking Solar Energy-Intensifier, Calvin E. Siegel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States agricultural system provides numerous opportunities in which solar energy can be utilized. Low to moderate temperature rise collectors can provide a large percentage of the energy requirements normally met by using high quality fossil fuels. As world demand for food production increases due to a growing population, alternative sources of energy need to be developed and applied as substitutes for these increasingly scarce fossil fuels. Agriculture offers practical advantages for the use of solar heat energy because there exists sufficient area for solar collectors and a wide range of temperature applications on most farmsteads. Demand for energy …

Resource management technical reports
Report suggests that the area of land suitable for Townsville Stylo in the North Kimberley above the 750 mm rainfall isohyet is about 1.25 million hectares. The regions in which land suitable for Stylosanthes can be found are shown. A brief description of the suitability of the land systems of the region for Stylosanthes is given.

Bird Use Of Revetted Riverbanks In The Willamette Valley, Clifford Brian Perry
Bird Use Of Revetted Riverbanks In The Willamette Valley, Clifford Brian Perry
Dissertations and Theses
Over 115 miles of rock revetments that serve to protect river banks have been constructed in the Willamette Basin. In this study the spring and summer bird use of Willamette Basin revetments is examined. Revetments that had not been recently cleared of most woody vegetation and blackberries were found to have significantly greater total and breeding bird use than cleared revetments. Possible factors affecting bird use, such as vegetation on revetments and vegetation adjacent to revetments are examined using linear regression analysis. The results of this study are compared with results of previous work in riparian forests along the Columbia …

Comparison Of Iron Supplements For The Prevention Of Anemia In Young Pigs, Steve Hieronymus
Comparison Of Iron Supplements For The Prevention Of Anemia In Young Pigs, Steve Hieronymus
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Crete Koate® product originally intended to be utilized for absorbing excess moisture and reducing knee abrasions of baby pigs raised in confinement, was tested as a hematinic for young pigs. Four treatments were studied: (1) T-NI, pigs receiving no iron; (2) T-IS, pigs receiving a 2 ml intramuscular injection of iron-dextran at 2 days of age; (3) T-CK, pigs raised in pens treated daily with Crete Koate; (4) T-ISCK, pics receiving an intramuscular injection of iron-dextran on day 2 whose pens received daily treatments of Crete Koate. Hemoglobin levels were used as an indicator of iron status in the …

Growing Degree Days Predictions For Corn And Sorghum Development And Some Applications To Crop Production In Nebraska, R. E. Neild, M. W. Seeley
Growing Degree Days Predictions For Corn And Sorghum Development And Some Applications To Crop Production In Nebraska, R. E. Neild, M. W. Seeley
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The concept of growing degree days (GDD) originated with observations by Reamur (1735) that plant development is more closely related to the temperature accumulated to a given stage than with time alone. It was not until nearly 200 years later, however, that Merriam (1894), Livingston (1916) and Klages (1942) began to use temperature accumulations in plant distribution studies and in crop geography. In the early 1950's, a system involving growing degree days became widely used in the canning industry to schedule plantings and thus control time of harvest of rapidly maturing vegetables. This system provided a more precise control of …

Agricultural Development In The North Kimberley : Terms, Conditions And Farm Size Recommendations, D G. Wilcox, J Ripley, R F. Johnson
Resource management technical reports
There are approximately 1,250,000 hectares of land in this area of Kimberley which may be sown to pastures such as Townsville Stylo, other Stylosanthes species or to other introduced pastures. The report recommends that grazing properties comprising 10,000 ha. of land capable of growing improved pastures, together with 60,000 ha. of native pasture land, should be established in the area. The economic size of the farm unit is 5,300 adult cattle equivalents.
