Grass Tetany, Paul Q. Guyer, Alex Hogg, Gene White Aug 1984

Grass Tetany, Paul Q. Guyer, Alex Hogg, Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Grass tetany is a nutritional or metabolic disorder in cattle characterized by low blood magnesium, yet it is not just a simple magnesium deficiency. It is also called grass staggers, wheat pasture poisoning and hypomagnesemia. It primarily affects older cows nursing calves under 8 weeks of age, but may also occur in young or dry cows and growing calves. It happens most frequently when cattle are grazing lush, immature grass, but occasionally occurs when cattle are fed dry forages (winter tetany).

Corn Grades And Feed Value, Morris J. Bitzer, Dan O. Riddell Aug 1984

Corn Grades And Feed Value, Morris J. Bitzer, Dan O. Riddell

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Corn is traditionally priced on the basis of U.S. No. 2 grade. However, with the release of CCC-owned corn stocks for Emergency Assistance Programs, there is an increase in corn being marketed as No. 4, No. 5 or Sample grade. It is important for producers to understand corn grading standards and the feeding values of these grades.

Alternative Crops For Ethanol Fuel Production: Agronomic, Processing, And Economic Considerations, Thomas Dobbs, Duane Auch, Randy Hoffman, William R. Gibbons Apr 1984

Alternative Crops For Ethanol Fuel Production: Agronomic, Processing, And Economic Considerations, Thomas Dobbs, Duane Auch, Randy Hoffman, William R. Gibbons

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

This report is a result of the fuel alcohol research team's broadened focus during 1983. A comprehensive literature review was carried out to explore alternative starch and sugar crop alternatives for ethanol fuel production. Although the literature search was quite inclusive with respect to geographic regions, special emphasis was given to the agronomic and economic potential of various fuel alcohol crops in the Northern Plains region of the U.S., of which South Dakota is a part, and in LDCs of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Our intent was to thereby determine possible energy crops deserving of more fuel alcohol research …

G84-716 Management Of The Weanling Calf, Paul Q. Guyer, Donald B. Hudson Jan 1984

G84-716 Management Of The Weanling Calf, Paul Q. Guyer, Donald B. Hudson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide outlines a program for preventing sickness and death losses in newly weaned calves, including stress prevention, vaccinations, nutrition, and treatment of sick calves.

Sickness and death loss following weaning robs both calf producers and cattle feeders of potential profits. The weanling calf has not acquired adequate immunity to the variety of diseases that plague the beef industry. At weaning and/or shipping, the calf is usually subjected to various stresses, in addition to being separated from its mother, that contribute to disease outbreaks. A program for minimizing weight loss, sickness, and death in newly weaned calves should include: 1) …

G84-708 Livestock Market Terms, Part I, Allen C. Wellman Jan 1984

G84-708 Livestock Market Terms, Part I, Allen C. Wellman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The first of a series of three, this NebGuide defines and categorizes general livestock and dressed meat terms, and different market types and marketing systems.

Livestock producers and feeders, lenders, owners of agribusiness firms and many others involved with agriculture listen to livestock market news broadcasts almost every hour of every weekday. The market information helps them make daily marketing buy-and-sell decisions.

Recent surveys indicate that accurate market news information, with commodity price reporting, ranked first in livestock marketing data needs priority with livestock producers, growers and finishers. The volatility of livestock prices, as influenced by local, national and international …

1984 Report Of Accomplishments, Loyd L. Young

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration

The year 1984 has been a difficult year for the residents of southeast Nebraska. I am very proud of the faculty of Southeast Research and Extension Center stationed in out Lincoln office on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska and the 23 county cooperative extension service offices in the Southeast Extension District, who have been sensitive to the needs of the people in planning their program in extension, research and forestry programs.

The University of Nebraska through the Cooperative Extension Service has played an important role in helping the residents of southeast Nebraska. It has been a year …

Ec84-1757 Who's Who In Great Plains Songbirds, Ron J. Johnson Jan 1984

Ec84-1757 Who's Who In Great Plains Songbirds, Ron J. Johnson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Habitat is where wildlife live. It contains all things needed for survival, such as shelter, food, water, and space. There are different types of habitat, each supporting different kinds of wildlife. Examples of habitat types include woodlands or areas with trees, grasslands, old fields, brushy areas, or wetlands.

This publication describes several favorite birds and includes information on their special habitat needs, unique characteristics, nesting sites, where they are found, and their habits or behavior. If you want to help the feathered wildlife described in this publication - or just about any wildlife for that matter - think habitat. You …

Effect Of Monensin, Estradiol Controlled Release Implants And Supplement On Performance In Grazing Steers, J. F. Wagner, H. Brown, N. W. Bradley, W. Dinusson, W. Dunn, N. Elliston, J. Miyat, D. Mowrey, J. Moreman, L. C. Pendlum, C. Parrott, L. Richardson, Ivan G. Rush, H. Woody Jan 1984

Effect Of Monensin, Estradiol Controlled Release Implants And Supplement On Performance In Grazing Steers, J. F. Wagner, H. Brown, N. W. Bradley, W. Dinusson, W. Dunn, N. Elliston, J. Miyat, D. Mowrey, J. Moreman, L. C. Pendlum, C. Parrott, L. Richardson, Ivan G. Rush, H. Woody

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Five trials in five locations in the United States involving 512 steers were conducted to evaluate the effect of monensin [200 mg/d in .9 kg of supplement (Rumensin)] and estradiol- controlled release implants (Compudose) administered alone and in combination on average daily gain (ADG) in steers on pasture. The effect of energy supplementation on rate of gain was also evaluated in these same trials. The initial weight of steers averaged 250 kg and the average duration of the five trials was 124 d. Estradiol-controlled release implants increased ADG by 15.6% (.095 kg/d; P<.0001) and monensin increased ADG by 8.1% (.054 kg/d; P<.05). The combination of estradiol-controlled release implant and monensin increased ADG by 27.4% (.I68 kg/d). Treatment responses were additive relative to ADG response, with no interaction observed between the treatments. Nine-tenths kilogram of an energy supplement/d increased ADG by 12.4% (.073 kg/d; P<.Ol).

G85-710 Livestock Market Terms, Part Iii, Allen C. Wellman Jan 1984

G85-710 Livestock Market Terms, Part Iii, Allen C. Wellman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The third in a series of three, this NebGuide discusses livestock grading terms for both live animals and carcasses.

Livestock producers and feeders, and others involved with agriculture are exposed daily to market news articles and broadcasts.

Most people understand the terms used in the market news broadcasts and stories. Complete definitions of terms in the livestock marketing area are provided to eliminate any misunderstanding of a market news broadcast or article.

Heg84-190 Rent A Home?, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Debra Busch Welsch Jan 1984

Heg84-190 Rent A Home?, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Debra Busch Welsch

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses advantages and disadvantages of renting; factors to consider in selecting rental housing, including apartments; and leases, costs and relationships with the landlord.

The word "home" means something special to all of us. A home is more than four walls and a roof that serves as a shelter from wind and rain. It provides us with a sense of belonging, a feeling of security and a place to relax and "be ourselves."

When we are looking for a place to call home, we have a number of needs to be satisfied. Some of these are very practical -- …

G84-672 Backyard Wildlife Making It Come Alive, Ron J. Johnson Jan 1984

G84-672 Backyard Wildlife Making It Come Alive, Ron J. Johnson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide, the last in a series of four, provides "how-to" ideas for getting the most enjoyment from backyard wildlife. Inviting wildlife to your backyard can be enjoyable, educational, and fun for the whole family. A backyard can offer the fascination of a robin's nest or cardinal's song, the scurry of a squirrel, the speed of a dragonfly, and the beauty of a hummingbird or butterfly at a flower. Wildlife photography is another opportunity. Some of the best songbird photographs have been taken from a blind in a backyard or through a back window. And, songbirds are only one of …

The Secretive Silvereyes, I J. Rooke Jan 1984

The Secretive Silvereyes, I J. Rooke

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Durinf the past five years the agricultural Protection Board, in co-operation with scientists from CSIRO's Division of Wildlife Research and the University of Western Australia, had studied the biology and control of the silvereye in the South-West of Western Asustralia. The project was partially funded by a voluntary levy on vignerons in the Margaret River and Mt Barker areas.

The first part of the study investigated the bird's bioloogy - its food requirements, reproductive rate, how it interacted with other birds and its seasonal movements, It was hoped that this knowledge would help develop effective techniques for either controlling the …
