Nf00-429 Controlling Pond Algae With Barley Straw, John C. Holz
Nf00-429 Controlling Pond Algae With Barley Straw, John C. Holz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Algae are microscopic, free-floating plants which comprise a critical component of a lake's food web. They are fed upon by tiny animals called zooplankton which are an important food source for fish. Algae color the water green or brown, and uncontrolled growth can lead to nuisance surface scums, poor water clarity, noxious odors and an overall reduction in the lake's recreational value. Excessive levels or "blooms" of algae occur when nutrients, especially phosphorus, are abundant. After taking steps to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering a lake, it may be desirable to control the algae growth directly. Typically this is …

G1416 Direct Sale Of Poultry, Paul Swanson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides poultry producers with information on how to market poultry directly to customers. It includes information on pricing, regulations, processing and relationship marketing.
The decision to market meat poultry requires a basic change in the way growers think about production. The question is no longer how many birds I can raise but how many I can sell at a reasonable profit.
Pricing
Several factors must be considered in pricing. First, determine the average amount of profit you need from each bird. Second, know your average cost to produce each bird. Finally, discover prices charged by others who are …

G00-1411 Biosecurity Basics For Cattle Operations And Good Management Practices (Gmp) For Controlling Infectious Diseases, Marilyn Buhman, Grant Dewell, Dicky D. Griffin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide introduces cattle producers to the concept of biosecurity and provides practical management recommendations for preventing and/or containing infectious disease.
Biosecurity
The goal of biosecurity is to stop transmission of disease-causing agents by preventing, minimizing or controlling cross-contamination of body fluids (feces, urine, saliva, etc.) between animals, animals to feed and animals to equipment that may directly or indirectly contact animals. Biosecurity management practices are designed to prevent the spread of disease by minimizing the movement of biologic organisms and their vectors (viruses, bacteria, rodents, flies, etc.) onto and within your operation. Biosecurity can be very difficult to maintain …

Exploring The Concept Of A Forest Landscape Management Paradigm, Emi̇n Zeki̇ Başkent, Haci̇ Ahmet Yolasiğmaz
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The concept of forest management planning has rapidly progressed towards a more holistic approach in the last decade. Considering the whole landscape of ecosystems is the focus of landscape management. This paper examines the evolutionary process of forest management and compares and contrasts the landscape management planning concept to its predecessor, the conventional forest resource management approach. It explains the conceptual framework, provides the principles and the improvements over the conventional management planning, and discusses different approaches towards the landscape management concept. However, the paper stresses the fact that the evolutionary process of forest management provides the basis for what …

Comparison Of Photosynthetic Water Use Efficiency Of Sweet Sorghum At Canopy And Leaf Scales, Mustafa Ünlü, Pasquale Steduto
Comparison Of Photosynthetic Water Use Efficiency Of Sweet Sorghum At Canopy And Leaf Scales, Mustafa Ünlü, Pasquale Steduto
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Little is known about the response of sweet sorghum to water stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize sweet sorghum physiological water use efficiency (WUE) under progressing water stress conditions, with emphasis on the canopy scale as compared with the leaf scale. Sweet sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) was subjected to two water stress cycles. Energy, water vapor, and CO 2 fluxes were estimated at the canopy scale by means of the Bowen ratio/energy balance/CO 2 gradient method (BREB+), and at the leaf scale with a portable photosynthesis system. Predawn (yb) and noon-time leaf water potential (yn) …
Effect Of Zinc Microelement On Quality Of Some Wheat Cultivars Grown In Central Anatolia, Gülcan Kinaci
Effect Of Zinc Microelement On Quality Of Some Wheat Cultivars Grown In Central Anatolia, Gülcan Kinaci
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Almost half of the cultivated areas of Turkey have been found to be zinc deficient. This deficiency is even more serious in Central Anatolia, the large cereal-producing region. Zinc is an essential element for nourishing plants, and also for normal development and functioning of humans and animals. Meeting the daily zinc requirement from diet is very difficult for people whose daily energy intake is based on cereals. However, wheat bread by itself contributes 40-70 % of daily energy intake for Turkish people. One way to overcome this problem is by increasing the zinc content of wheat by applying zinc to …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Under salinity stress, growth and variations in proline, Na, Cl, P and K concentrations of three chickpea varieties (Canitez- 87, ILC-195/2 and Damla), which are cultivated widely in Turkey, were investigated. For this purpose, experimental soil was salinized with 68 mmol kg ^{-1}NaCl. The salinity responses of chickpea varieties were compared by means of various plant parameters. According to the results, Damla was affected by salinity stress much more than Canitez-87 and ILC-195/2 cultivars. However, under salinity stress, the dry weight of the Damla variety was influenced much less than the others. Sodium and Cl contents were generally found to …

Theses and Dissertations
This study was performed in the Poroma community of the Oropeza Province, in the department of Chuquisaca. The Poroma community is characterized by a high poverty level among its members due to a number of different factors. Some of the major factors include: a restricted market, small farms, an absence of support systems, and a lack of support for agricultural development. This lack of support is seen in areas such as: research, roads, electricity, technical assistance, marketing systems, organization, and institutions that support rural development. Numerous studies on the production systems of farmers have described and analyzed the agricultural components …

Western Australia - A Johne's Disease Free Zone, Peter Morcombe
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The control of Johne's disease (JD) in Australia is coordinated nationally by Animal Health Australia in conjunction with the livestock industries and the Commonwealth and State "Governments. Zones were established for Australia in July 1999 to control the spread of JD. These zones ensured that surveillance established the prevalence of JD, and that movement restrictions on livestock appropriate to the zone status were implemented. Following many years of surveillance and restrictions on the introduction of livestock, Western Australia has now been declared a Johne's Disease Free Zone - the first in Australia. Johne's Disease State Coordinator Peter Morcombe looks at …

Crop Quality And Utilization: A Twelve-Hour In Vitro Procedure For Sorghum Grain Feed Quality Assessment, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Todd Milton, R. A. Mass
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Improvedmethods for assessing cereal crop feed value are a prerequisite for the genetic improvement of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] feed value. Rate of starch digestion is now commonly believed to be the limiting factor in sorghum utilization by cattle (Bos taurus). However, techniques to assess this trait are not useful to sorghum breeders because of high labor inputs, lab error associated with starch measurement, and need for high numbers of replications. The objective of this study was to develop a simple technique capable of identifying differences in digestion between sorghum and corn (Zea mays L.) …
