Native Roadside Perennial Grasses Persist A Decade After Planting In The Sacramento Valley, Ryan E. O'Dell, Stephen L. Young, Victor P. Claassen Apr 2007

Native Roadside Perennial Grasses Persist A Decade After Planting In The Sacramento Valley, Ryan E. O'Dell, Stephen L. Young, Victor P. Claassen

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Restoring native grassland along roadsides can provide a relatively low-maintenance, drought-tolerant and stable perennial vegetative cover with reduced weed growth, as opposed to the high-maintenance invasive annual cover (requiring intensive mowing and herbicide treatments) that dominates most Sacramento Valley roadsides. A survey of long-established roadside native-grass plantings in Yolo County showed that once established and protected from disturbance, such plantings can persist with minimal maintenance for more than a decade, retaining a high proportion of native species. The survey also showed that each species of native perennial grass displays a microhabitat preference for particular roadside topographic positions, and that native …

Review Of Harvest For Hope: A Guide To Mindful Eating By Jane Goodall With Gary Mcavoy And Gail Hudson, Charles A. Francis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

One of the world's preeminent experts on primate behavior, author Jane Goodall now invests her boundless energy traveling and speaking about conservation. After years of studying chimpanzees in the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, Goodall found their very existence threatened by poachers, by encroachment of farming into their habitat, and by global forces far from their wild environment. She is now on a mission to inform the public about what is wrong with our society and its impact on the planet. Harvest for Hope catalogs the problems and provides practical solutions.

Root Lesion And Burrowing Nematodes In Western Australian Cropping Systems, Vivien Vanstone Feb 2007

Root Lesion And Burrowing Nematodes In Western Australian Cropping Systems, Vivien Vanstone

Bulletins 4000 -

Nematodes are common soil pests that feed on the roots of a wide range of crop plants in all agricultural areas of Western Australia, irrespective of soil type and rainfall. Nematodes multiply on susceptible hosts. Consequently, as nematode populations increase, crop production is limited. Cereal yield losses due to nematodes in Western Australia are in the order of 5 to 15 per cent per annum, but individual losses as high as 40 per cent have been recorded.

Nitrogen Management For Wheat Protein And Yield In The Esperance Port Zone, Jeremy Lemon Jan 2007

Nitrogen Management For Wheat Protein And Yield In The Esperance Port Zone, Jeremy Lemon

Bulletins 4000 -

This manual is part of a joint project between the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) with funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). Growers in the Esperance port zone have been concerned with declining protein levels in wheat and its impact on farm returns as well as strong messages from processors of Esperance wheat that they require higher protein in the wheat they mill and process.

The project entailed grower involvement in designing and executing field scale experiments using farmer machinery, grower workshops, field days and meetings to …

Oviedo Rondon, Beatrice A. Clack, S. Clemente-Hernandez, J. Osborne, J. C. Remus, H. Kettunen, H. Makivuokko, E. M. Pierson

Faculty Publications

This research aimed to evaluate the effects of adding a combination of exogenous enzymes to starter diets varying in protein content and fed to broilers vaccinated at day of hatch with live oocysts and then challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. Five hundred four 1-d-old male Cobb-500 chickens were distributed in 72 cages. The design consisted of 12 treatments. Three anticoccidial control programs [ionophore (IO), coccidian vaccine (COV), and coccidia-vaccine + enzymes (COV + EC)] were evaluated under 3 CP levels (19, 21, and 23%), and 3 unmedicated-uninfected (UU) negative controls were included for each one of the protein levels. The current financial and fuel crises threaten food security in poorer nations and among the poor in wealthier countries. Sustainable food production benefits communities and their food supply and can maintain farming systems in less developed agricultural regions. Many small farmers have long practiced organic agriculture, but face pressure to adopt green revolution farming, using chemicals and commercial seed. Some are resisting this, but lack the technology to apply organic methods on a larger scale. Cuba provides an instructive example of a nation that confronted a sudden food and fuel crisis by adopting organic agricultural technologies across production systems that …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Folks, I've been asked to talk with you today about my vision for the future, so let's get right to it. First, my vision is this: Agriculture will remain Nebraska's leading industry. It's importance will grow in our state. It already has. In 1990 one in four Nebraskans depended upon agriculture in some way for their livelihood. Last year Dr. Charles Lamphear told us it's one in three in his study for the Nebraska Policy Institute.

Case Study: Dried Distillers Grains As Creep Feed For Yearling Beef Cattle Grazing Sandhill Range, R. N. Funston, D. C. Adams, M. C. Stockton

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Seventy-nine crossbred steers and heifers born in June or August were stratified by weight, calving group, and sex and assigned to treatment or control. Yearlings in the treatment group (TRT; n = 40) grazed native summer Sandhill range and had access to ad libitum dried distillers grains (DDG) pellet in a creep feeder for 54 d of a 63-d grazing period. Control (CON; n = 39) yearlings grazed in an adjacent pasture without DDG. Immediately after the grazing period, yearlings were placed in a feedlot and fed to a similar finish end point. Individual forage and DDG intake …
