Re-Evaluating Coverage Metrics For Wireless Sensor Network Border Security Applications, Kevin Haney 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Re-Evaluating Coverage Metrics For Wireless Sensor Network Border Security Applications, Kevin Haney

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology used to monitor an environment over time. One specific application of the wireless sensor network is the border security application. Researchers have adapted coverage metrics from general wireless sensor network literature to fit the border security application. While some of the adapted metrics count the number of sensors detecting a potential target, others measure the distance between a potential target and its nearest sensor. No existing metric accounts for both of these factors. To take advantage of this gap and to attempt to increase the accuracy to which coverage is measured in this …

A Machine Learning Approach For Allocating Route Cost To Customers For Transportation And Logistics Services., Alison Davis 2020 University of Louisville

A Machine Learning Approach For Allocating Route Cost To Customers For Transportation And Logistics Services., Alison Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in big data enabled management practices inspire logistics companies to study deeper into their transportation operations with a data driven approach. One such question asks: How can a logistics firm identify high-cost customers in their service network? In the presence of rich data on routes involving many customers, this thesis develops a framework to allocate a route cost among customers that the route serves, where each route is associated with multiple route features related to the transportation cost. Cost is allocated using the proportional allocation approach in combination with the random forest method in machine learning. First, this framework …

Effects Of Design Autonomy On The Flow Experience, Antonio F Coriano 2020 University of Louisville

Effects Of Design Autonomy On The Flow Experience, Antonio F Coriano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most modern workplace settings are laden with operating procedures aimed at standardizing action in the name of efficiency. The cost of this standardization is the autonomy of the operator. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi stated the problem concisely in his 1975 work Beyond Boredom and Anxiety “… [M]ost of the institutions that take up our time…are organized around the assumption that serious work is grim and unpleasant. Because of this assumption, most of our time is spent doing unpleasant things”. An experiment was created to study and better understand how to redress this harmful situation. Sixteen subjects were given a SolidWorks computer-aided design …

Locating Emergency Shelters While Incorporating Spatial Factors, Justin Taylor 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Locating Emergency Shelters While Incorporating Spatial Factors, Justin Taylor

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the immediate response phase of a natural disaster, local governments and nonprofit agencies often establish shelters for affected populations. Decisions regarding at which locations to open shelters are made ad hoc based on available building inventory, and may result in high travel impedance to reach shelters and congestion. This thesis presents a shelter location optimization model based on the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method. The 2SFCA method creates a shelter accessibility score for each areal unit (e.g., census block group) which represents the ability for persons in the unit to access shelter capacity with low travel impedance, relative …

Simulation Modeling Of Cross-Dock And Distribution Center Based Supply Chains, Ghewa Al Chall

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Companies are implementing new strategies to meet the customer requirements in terms of quality, timing, and cost. One of these strategies is cross-docking, which can be defined as the process of consolidating the products coming from different suppliers, but having the same destination, with minimal handling and almost no storage between loading and unloading of the goods. The purpose of this research is to investigate the benefits of having a cross-docking facility in a supply chain. In this research, we focus on developing discrete event simulation models using the opensource Java Simulation Library (JSL). Also, we work on augmenting an …

Senior Design Project For Engineers

Known as the “Renaissance Man,” DaVinci’s impressive knowledge of mechanics and inventive prowess would influence engineers and innovators hundreds of years later to make human flight a reality. However, due to the limited capacity of engineering and manufacturing at the time, his invention had been shallowly investigated in a production setting. This project strove to properly acknowledge DaVinci’s invention by thorough examination and critical analysis of his concept with the hopes of gaining a better understanding of why it is considered the “foundation of vertical flight”.

An iterative design approach was employed, utilizing faculty and university resources, team knowledge from …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Continuing Education At Emergency Medical Services, Tasmia Mustaquim

LSU Master's Theses

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) require staff to recertify periodically, which involves a significant amount of continuing education. Great effort is given to designing and delivering a continuing education program, but it is also important to know if the training had all of the intended impacts. Nationally, there is no evidence-based system in place for training evaluation at EMS. This research proposes a framework being used at East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services (EBRP-EMS) to evaluate a course, generate reports to indicate the performance of staff, and identify areas of improvement.

The Kirkpatrick Model, which is a 4-level evaluation, is …

Application Of Theory Of Constraints (Toc) In Managing Project Information Constraints, Ferdinand Z. Prantl

EMSE Doctoral Projects

The scope of this doctoral project is the non-traditional application of Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) from the area of Theory of Constraints (ToC) in mitigating disruption in distribution facilities during phased upgrades caused by information constraint. The relevance of this project is that industrial equipment upgrades pose a significant risk of disrupting the operation of automated distribution facilities. It is partly due to a very high expected availability rate, as well as tight coupling with other upstream and downstream elements of the larger supply chain network. As a consequence of disruption in this scenario, losses incurred not only within the facility being …

Effects Of Transparency And Haze On Trust And Performance During A Full Motion Video Analysis Task, Sarah C. Leibner 2020 Old Dominion University

Effects Of Transparency And Haze On Trust And Performance During A Full Motion Video Analysis Task, Sarah C. Leibner

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Automation is pervasive across all task domains, but its adoption poses unique challenges within the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) domain. When users are unable to establish optimal levels of trust in the automation, task accuracy, speed, and automation usage suffer (Chung & Wark, 2016). Degraded visual environments (DVEs) are a particular problem in ISR; however, their specific effects on trust and task performance are still open to investigation (Narayanaswami, Gandhe, & Mehra, 2010). Research suggests that transparency of automation is necessary for users to accurately calibrate trust levels (Lyons et al., 2017). Chen et al. (2014) proposed three levels …

Barriers And Facilitators Influencing Compliance With Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocol: A Qualitative Study, Paige Boudreaux

LSU Master's Theses

Standardization in many industries has proven to lead to improved productivity and efficiency, however, standard practice in healthcare has proven difficult due to patient and physician variation. Evidence-based practices provide an opportunity to create more standardization. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs are attempting to standardize the surgical pathways of patients by implementing standard evidence-based steps, beginning in the surgeons office and continuing through a patients discharge (Ljungqvist, Scott, & Fearon, 2017). Implementing ERAS to standardize the surgical care of patients has shown to improve patient outcomes, reduce length of stay and reduce readmissions, however, there is a lack of …

A Methodology For Incorporating The Effect Of Grain Size On The Energy Efficiency Coefficient For Fatigue Crack Initiation Estimation In Polycrystalline Metal, Chun-Yu Ou, Rohit Voothaluru, C. Richard Liu

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Estimating fatigue crack initiation of applied loading is challenging due to the large number of individual entities within a microstructure that could affect the accumulation of dislocations. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of fatigue crack initiation models, it is essential to accurately compute the energy dissipated into the microstructure per fatigue loading cycle. The extent of the energy dissipated within the microstructure as a fraction of the overall energy imparted by loading has previously been defined as the ‘energy efficiency coefficient’. This work studied the energy efficiency coefficient as a factor in the measurement of accumulated plastic strain …
