Virtue-Driven Leadership: Powering Excellence In Organizations, 2023 Washington University in St. Louis
Virtue-Driven Leadership: Powering Excellence In Organizations, Joseph Scherrer
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I seek to answer the question “What makes a good leader?” I approach this question systematically, starting in Chapter 1 by asking “What is Leadership?” In attempting to formulate a response, I find that the concept is slipperier than it first appears and difficult to pin down. All the same, I construct a thematic, contextually pertinent definition that provides reasonable precision for the purposes of this study. In Chapter 2, I present a representative survey of the social-scientific academic literature in order to establish the prospect that a philosophy of virtuous leadership can be empirically validated in …
The Strength Of Community: The Role Of Social Support Networks In Sport Officials’ Retention, 2023 Trinity University
The Strength Of Community: The Role Of Social Support Networks In Sport Officials’ Retention, Jacob K. Tingle, Brittany L. Jacobs, Matthew Katz, Stacy Warner
School of Business Faculty Research
Previous researchers have indicated that a sense of community and social support are vital to referee retention; however, little is known about the connection between specific characteristics of sports officials’ networks and retention. To better understand the sports officiating shortage, researchers explored the social support networks of 116 referees utilizing egocentric network analysis. The authors suggest that retention of sports officials depends on the interpersonal ties and network structures within which the referees are embedded. Specifically, resulting hierarchical models confirmed that retention relationships among officials are a multilevel phenomenon, and that outside communication and community were vital network characteristics that …
Organisational Drivers And Sustainability Implementation In The Mining Industry: A Holistic Theoretical Framework, 2023 Edith Cowan University
Organisational Drivers And Sustainability Implementation In The Mining Industry: A Holistic Theoretical Framework, Prince Amoah, Gabriel Eweje
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
While few studies have examined the role of institutional pressures on sustainable business practices, there is a dearth of empirical research regarding the influence of internal organisational characteristics on sustainability implementation in developing countries. This paper examines internal organisational features and how they influence multinational companies (MNCs) operating in a resource-rich developing country to embrace and embed sustainability into corporate policies and practices. The findings show that the history of past sustainable practices, the level of internationalisation and managerial cognition internally drive MNCs to implement sustainability in their host countries. We discuss that managerial cognition drives MNCs to embrace sustainability …

Should State Land In Southern California Be Allocated To Warehousing Goods Or Housing People? Analyzing Transportation, Climate, And Unintended Consequences Of Supply Chain Solutions, Tianjun Lu, Jian-Yu Ke, Azure Fisher, Mahmoud Salari, Patricia Valladolid, Fynnwin Prager
Mineta Transportation Institute Publications
In response to COVID-19 pandemic supply chain issues, the State of California issued Executive Order (EO) N-19-21 to use state land to increase warehousing capacity. This highlights a land-use paradox between economic and environmental goals: adding warehouse capacity increases climate pollution and traffic congestion around the ports and warehouses, while there is a deficit of affordable housing and high homeless rates in port-adjacent underserved communities. This study aims to inform regional policymakers and community stakeholders about these trade-offs by identifying current and future supply of and demand for warehousing and housing in Southern California through 2040. The study uses statistical …

Most of the research in this field has primarily concentrated on small businesses and entrepreneurship under favorable circumstances, highlighting factors such as entrepreneurial drive, maximizing profits, taking risks, developing ideas, and promoting fair competition. Managing patients with a history of intravenous bisphosphonates and antiresorptive medications poses challenges in clinical decision-making. Extractions are generally discouraged in these patients due to the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). This case study presents an 89-year-old female with metastatic breast cancer on Xgeva, facing a non-restorable tooth (#30). A collaborative approach involving the general dentist, endodontist, and oral surgeon employed endodontic therapy, crown amputation, and soft tissue advancement, avoiding extraction. The technique, akin to coronectomy, mitigates MRONJ risk by preserving bone integrity. Follow-up assessments indicate successful treatment without complications, highlighting the efficacy of this approach in …
Shifting Perspectives: How Scrutiny Shapes The Relationship Between Ceo Gender And Acquisition Activity, 2023 University of Georgia
Shifting Perspectives: How Scrutiny Shapes The Relationship Between Ceo Gender And Acquisition Activity, Daniel L. Gamache, Cynthia E. Devers, Felice B. Klein, Timothy Hannigan
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research Summary: Several upper echelons studies have found that firms led by female executives are less likely to engage in risky endeavors than those led by male top executives. We argue that conceptualizing female CEOs as universally conservative decision-makers may paint too simplistic a picture and that the impact of CEO gender on strategic decision-making may vary significantly depending on the given situation CEOs are experiencing. We integrate executive job demands and gender research to propose that scrutiny will exhibit differential effects on female and male CEOs' acquisition activity. We show that in high-scrutiny contexts, the difference between male and …

Does Contingent Reward Leadership Enhance Or Diminish Team Creativity? It Depends On Leader (Un-) Predictability, 2023 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Does Contingent Reward Leadership Enhance Or Diminish Team Creativity? It Depends On Leader (Un-) Predictability, Debjani Ghosh, Martin Buss, Amita Shivhare
Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although prior research has shown that reward provision might sometimes increase creativity, little is known about how leadership that clarifies effort-reward contingencies (i.e., contingent reward leadership) is related to team creativity. Drawing on the theory of learned industriousness, we argue that contingent reward leadership can enhance team knowledge exchange and, in turn, team creative performance. However, we propose that this relationship is moderated by leader unpredictability, which can create uncertainty about resource allocation, thereby undermining the otherwise positive effect of contingent reward leadership. In a two-source, lagged design (three-wave) field study with data from 60 organizational teams, we found a …
