Corporate Governance, Institutional Ownership, And The Decision To Pay The Amount Of Dividends: Evidence From Usa, John Obradovich, Amarjit Gill

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The decision to pay dividends is influenced by many financial factors. The purpose of this study is to find the relationships between corporate governance, institutional ownership, and the decision to pay dividends in American service firms. A sample of 296 American firms listed on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for a period of 3 years (from 2009-2011) was selected. This study applied a co-relational and non-experimental research design. The Impact Of Corporate Governance And Financial Leverage On The Value Of American Firms, John Obradovich, Amarjit Gill

Faculty Publications and Presentations

A sample of 333 firms listed on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for a period of 3 years from 2009-2011 was selected. The co-relational and non-experimental research design was used to conduct this study. Overall, findings show that larger board size negatively impacts the value of American firms, and CEO duality, audit committee, financial leverage, firm size, return on assets, and insider holdings positively impact the value of American firms. …

Work System Theory: Overview Of Core Concepts, Extensions, And Challenges For The Future, Steven Alter 2013 University of San Francisco

Work System Theory: Overview Of Core Concepts, Extensions, And Challenges For The Future, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper presents a current, accessible, and overarching view of work system theory. WST is the core of an integrated body of theory that emerged from a long-term research project to develop a systems analysis and design method for business professionals called the work system method (WSM). After discussing WST’s basic premises and its two central frameworks, this paper summarizes the relationship between WST and WSM. It shows how experience with early versions of WSM led to three extensions of WST that addressed limitations-in-use in one of the central frameworks in WST. After comparisons with related theories, this paper closes …

Institutional Voids: Black Hole Or Opportunities?, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Emerging markets and their institutional voids offer great growth potential for corporates and organisations seeking an exit strategy from the gloomy European market, says Harvard professor Tarun Khanna. ‘Institutional voids’, a phrase coined by Khanna in his book "Winning in Emerging Markets, refers to the absence of intermediaries like market research firms and credit card systems to efficiently connect buyers and sellers. This creates daunting obstacles for companies trying to operate in emerging markets. According to Khanna, understanding these voids – and learning how to work with them in specific markets – is the key to success

Some four years ago, when the economic recession started in the West, Navi Radjou was convinced that the way ahead meant companies had to innovate and become faster, better and cheaper if they were to survive. Enter Jugaad. Jugaad is a Hindi word which means “an innovative fix; an improvised solution born from ingenuity and resourcefulness” and is now the name of a new approach to innovation.

The Road Well-Travelled: Internationalism And Globalisation, Singapore Management University 2013 Singapore Management University

The Road Well-Travelled: Internationalism And Globalisation, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Internationalism and globalisation involve more than the number of companies and the variety of jurisdictions in which they operate. For Stephen Wyatt, the transition to internationalism is a journey in which we are able to trace the evolution of firms making incrementally logical decisions and the natural consequence of where they are right now, whether they are incremental decisions seeking to maximise profitability or returns, or long term stability. And as those decisions continue incrementally, there is a continuum, or journey, along which they travel, that provides an opportunity

The Trojan Fish Strategy, Singapore Management University 2013 Singapore Management University

The Trojan Fish Strategy, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

How does an ornamental fish exporter grow its bottom line? Simple: By adopting and adapting the business model of the world’s most famous safety razor company. The Gillette Business Model, also known as Freebie Marketing, is much copied because of its simplicity: sell razors at a loss, or even give them away free, but make back your money with the disposable blade replacements. That same strategy has served many industries well

The Importance Of Information Integrity: In A Data-Driven World, Unreliable And Inaccurate Information Can Lead To Bad Decision-Making, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Madhavan K. Nayar 2013 University of Dayton

The Importance Of Information Integrity: In A Data-Driven World, Unreliable And Inaccurate Information Can Lead To Bad Decision-Making, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Madhavan K. Nayar

Accounting Faculty Publications

What is information integrity? It is the trustworthiness and dependability of information. The credibility of information depends on whether we are getting it from sources we can trust. After all, the value of information to the decision-maker and problem-solver consists first in its integrity, and then in its usefulness and usability. Why? Because, even the best chef knows that you can't make a good omelet out of bad eggs! Consider the emerging trend of big data (see" Big Data" on page 34). According to IBM, people create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day (a quintillion is 1 followed by …

Sustainable Purchasing Practices: An Investigation Into Current Industry Awareness And Practice, Frank Palisi, Kathryne Newton, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

This research study illustrates the importance of sustainable purchasing practices for organizations in the U.S. distribution industry and answers several important questions: what is the current awareness of U.S. organizations regarding sustainable purchasing practices; to what extent are U.S. organizations evaluating, selecting, and retaining suppliers based upon sustainable purchasing practices; and to what extent are sustainable purchasing practices being implemented by the U.S. organizations under study? With an ever increasing global economy, is it critically important for organizations to put in place sustainability practices; the biggest impact organizations can make is often in an organization’s purchasing department. The researcher begins …

Power And Politics In Organizations, Thomas W. Camm 2013 Montana Tech

Power And Politics In Organizations, Thomas W. Camm

Mining Engineering

Aristotle made the observation that man is a political animal. Engineers often like to think they are above the fray when it comes to organizational politics, but most organizational theorists believe politics is a fundamental dynamic in any group. This paper examines the various ways that people use power within organizations to negotiate the political interactions in the work place.

Say Pays! Shareholder Voice And Firm Performance, Vicente Cuñat, Mireia Gine, Maria Guadalupe 2013 London School of Economics

Say Pays! Shareholder Voice And Firm Performance, Vicente Cuñat, Mireia Gine, Maria Guadalupe

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper estimates the effect of increasing shareholder “voice” in corporations through a new governance rule that provides shareholders with a regular vote on pay: Say on Pay. We apply a regression discontinuity design to Say on Pay shareholder proposals to deal with prior expectations and the endogeneity of internal governance rules. Adopting Say on Pay leads to large increases in market value (5.4 percent), firm profitability, and long-term performance. In contrast, we find small effects on the level and structure of pay. This suggests that Say on Pay operates as a regular confidence vote, increasing efficiency, and market value.

Lifting The Iron Curtain: Paul Anderson And The Cold War's First Sport Exchange, Dominic G. Morais, Jan Todd

School of Business Faculty Research

On 15 June 1955, Paul Anderson, the 340-pound American heavyweight, lay on a couch waiting for his first attempt at a weightlifting competition in Moscow between the Soviet Union and the United States.1 The event, held at the large, outdoor Zelyony Theater in Gorky Park, was the first of two contests being held as part of a goodwill trip authorized by the U.S. State Department.2 During the contest, lifter after lifter warmed up backstage, pacing nervously between sets as they awaited their tum on the enormous stage festooned with Soviet and American flags. Anderson and his teammates—Tommy Kono, …

Strategic Planning In Construction Professional Service Firms: A Study Of Irish Qs Practices, Roisin Murphy

Articles

The role and usefulness of strategic planning has been documented over several decades of strategic management research. Despite the significant body of existing knowledge in the field of strategic planning, there remains limited empirical investigation of the construction sector, specifically professional service firms operating within it. The construction sector is hugely important to the Irish economy, yet until now, no empirical investigation has been undertaken to determine the strategic planning process in construction professional service firms in Ireland. A two-phase mixed methods study was undertaken to ascertain the extent of strategic planning within quantity surveying (QS) practices in Ireland. Characteristics …
