Breaking Television News: Is Social Media Coverage You Can Count On?, Eileen Canosa Teves

Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods study explored how 10 television journalists and photojournalists handled social media’s integration and its impact on television news. A quantitative survey modeled after Moore and Benbasat’s (1991) instrument using the Diffusion of Innovations theory as a foundation measured how participants adopted social media in newsgathering and dissemination. Through qualitative one-on-one interviews, data revealed that participants believed social media was advantageous in collecting and reporting television news. Television journalists were able to locate sources, experts, and visual images. Social media allowed participants to report live from the scene and deliver news quickly. The innovation enabled participants to connect …

Value Creation And Value Capture In The Automotive Industry: Empirical Evidence From Czechia, Petr Pavlinek, Jan Ženka 2016 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Value Creation And Value Capture In The Automotive Industry: Empirical Evidence From Czechia, Petr Pavlinek, Jan Ženka

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

This article investigates how distinct tiers of firms contribute to value creation and value capture in the automotive industry. We employ firm-level indicators to evaluate the value creation and capture of distinct supplier tiers in the Czech automotive industry, while considering differences between foreign-owned and domestic firms. Our analysis suggests that the economic effects of the automotive industry largely depend on its capital intensity and that mostly foreign-owned higher tier firms generate and capture greater value than lower tier firms, which include the vast majority of domestic suppliers.

Suffering In Silence: Investigating The Role Of Fear In The Relationship Between Abusive Supervision And Defensive Silence, Christian Kiewitz, Simon Lloyd D. Restubog, Mindy K. Shoss, Patrick Raymund James M. Garcia, Robert L. Tang

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Drawing from an approach-avoidance perspective, we examine the relationships between subordinates’ perceptions of abusive supervision, fear, defensive silence, and ultimately abusive supervision at a later time point. We also account for the effects of subordinates’ assertiveness and individual perceptions of a climate of fear on these predicted mediated relationships. We test this moderated mediation model with data from three studies involving different sources collected across various measurement periods. Results corroborated our predictions by showing (a) a significant association between abusive supervision and subordinates’ fear, (b) second-stage moderation effects of subordinates’ assertiveness and their individual perceptions of a climate of fear …

Shareholder Advocacy In Corporate Elections: Case Studies In Proxy Voting Websites For Retail Investors, Robin Miller 2016 Clark University

Shareholder Advocacy In Corporate Elections: Case Studies In Proxy Voting Websites For Retail Investors, Robin Miller

Sustainability and Social Justice

One of the key rights shareholders retain is the right to vote on issues affecting the companies in which they invest. This voting right is seen as one of the primary means of exercising diligent corporate governance (Cole 2003, Fairfax 2009). Only 28 percent of individual investors vote in corporate elections compared with 91 percent of institutional investors. Informed voting decisions at corporate elections can be very information intensive, and theories of rational apathy and the free rider problem may explain a lack of participation from individual investors.

Many shareholders cannot attend annual corporate meetings, so they …

A Horizon Decomposition Approach For The Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem With Setup Times, Ioannis FRAGKOS, Zeger DEGRAEVE, Bert DE REYCK 2016 Singapore Management University

A Horizon Decomposition Approach For The Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem With Setup Times, Ioannis Fragkos, Zeger Degraeve, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We introduce horizon decomposition in the context of Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition, and apply it to the capacitated lot-sizing problem with setup times. We partition the problem horizon in contiguous overlapping intervals and create subproblems identical to the original problem, but of smaller size. The user has the flexibility to regulate the size of the master problem and the subproblem via two scalar parameters. We investigate empirically which parameter configurations are efficient, and assess their robustness at different problem classes. Our branch-and-price algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art branch-and-cut solvers when tested to a new data set of challenging instances that we generated. Our methodology …

Modeling Supply Chain Resiliency, Jeff A. Hazel

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Engineered Resilient Systems (ERS) is a Department of Defense (DoD) program focusing on the effective and efficient design and development of complex engineered systems throughout their life cycle. There is a growing literature with qualitative definitions of resilience and quantitative models for systems with one performance measure. This paper uses a quantitative resilience framework (the Framework for ERS) that includes system design options, reliability, threats, vulnerabilities, responses, and consequences assessed in multiple system performance measures. The framework assists in establishing a model for any system to evaluate resiliency. This paper applies this framework using Multiple Objective Decision Analysis (MODA) to …

Do Investors Value The Required Stress Tests Of Financial Holding Companies?, Brendan A. Colligan

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper explores the value of disclosing stress test results to investors and market participants within the US financial system. Recently the Federal Reserve (“Fed”) expanded its required internal stress testing program, often referred to as the Dodd-Frank Act Stress Test (“DFAST”), to include bank holding companies (“BHCs”) with more than $10 billion in total assets. These BHCs were required to publicly disclose their results for the first time in June of 2015. Large BHCs are subject to another level of stress testing implemented by the Comprehensive Capital Analysis Review (“CCAR”). Large BHCs are defined as having more than $50 …

This paper investigates the relation between crude oil price volatility and stock returns among oil companies using a three-part methodology, by using the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) as oil price benchmark. I asses the various indicators that set signals for oil price volatility and the interpretation of each (PMI, S&P500, DJIA, and World Crude Oil Output). This research also focuses on the relation between different types of companies in the oil industry (integrated, upstream, and downstream) and how each type of company will be assessed in a particular way to predict abnormal returns, based on market data and statistical analyses …

Three Essays On Networks And Knowledge Value, Mahmoud Ibrahim M Fallatah

Management Dissertations - Archive

Knowledge creation is one of the most factors that contribute to organizational performance and competitive advantage. Ample studies have employed network theory to examine the impact of various social capital and network-related features on the creation of new knowledge. However, some areas have been understudied or have not been explored yet. Thus, through three essays, this dissertation attempts to examine the relationships among networks, knowledge value, and firm performance. It advances our understanding of how the structure of networks changes, how some network characteristics affect the value of created knowledge, and how knowledge value contributes to firm performance. Using data …

Internal Controls For Reputational Threats: Organizational Governance Intelligence, Jesus Rodolfo Jimenez-Andrade

Student Scholarship

Companies are exposed to reputational scandals derived from both their actions and the behavior of other parties. Even seemingly routine business interactions have the potential to generate scandals and threaten the reputations of major companies. This research addresses the question, “What is the experience of managerial officers attending to and mitigating reputational threats, whether attributable to themselves or to external parties which may or may not be affiliated with the organization?” The methodological approach used is grounded theory based on semi-structured interviews with managers of 27 major publicly traded organizations. Their responses document that not all reputational threats become scandals, …

Profit Shifting And Manipulation, Byron Dela Rosa

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

As of late, many U.S. firms have made their way overseas in ways many feel are unethical. U.S. multinationals have taken note of the unimaginable domestic corporate income tax rate the United States has set for these U.S. corporations. Similar to an individual paycheck you may receive, you must pay a portion to the U.S. government in taxes. And even more similarly, you wish that you did not have to pay it either. U.S. multinationals have the same mindset, as they have found ways to avoid the corporate income tax through foreign activity strategies. Using scholarly research papers and well-renown …
