Mid-Level Procurement Manager Leader Development: A Collective Case Study, Douglas Veatch

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The development of high-performing employees with the potential to assume leadership roles remains a vital exercise for organizations. Public and private sector organizations of all sizes have implemented programs focused on developing the next generation of leaders. The researcher explored the issue of how a national service industry organization is experiencing varied levels of success of leader development in the case of geographically dispersed mid-level procurement managers in the trucking logistics group. Guided by elements of successful leader development programs, the purpose of this collective qualitative case study was to discover the common issues and factors that lead to success …

Leading Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In A Difficult Period: What Differentiates Success From Failure, Emmanuel Quansah 2016 Case Western Reserve University

Leading Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In A Difficult Period: What Differentiates Success From Failure, Emmanuel Quansah

Student Scholarship

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the largest engines of job creation and innovation in the U.S. and many parts of the world--yet most of them fail within the first five years of being opened. While the factors that contribute to their failures have been well studied, there is little empirical research about how they survive difficult economic periods. How can SMEs compete and grow in the face of today's complex, turbulent, and fiercely competitive business environment? The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of how leaders of successful SMEs enable their businesses to survive and …

Local And International Entrepreneurial Relationship Experiences Of Black Business Leaders, Shola Ajiboye 2016 Case Western Reserve University

Local And International Entrepreneurial Relationship Experiences Of Black Business Leaders, Shola Ajiboye

Student Scholarship

There has been an absence of research in the academic and practice literature on entrepreneurial relationship experiences of Black business leaders. This qualitative study attempted to fill this gap. Twenty-nine top business leaders were interviewed, representing different sectors of the economy, including 15 Africans in Nigeria, West Africa and 14 African Americans in the U.S., to examine and compare their local and international business relationship experiences. The results showed 20 identified differences. The study also revealed three broad areas of similarity that provide a potential basis for future partnerships and one common barrier that provides a basis for future advocacy.

Nonprofit Ceo Sustainability: Maintaining Personal Wellbeing And Effective Organizational Leadership Over The Long Haul, Jeffrey D. Frey 2016 Case Western Reserve University

Nonprofit Ceo Sustainability: Maintaining Personal Wellbeing And Effective Organizational Leadership Over The Long Haul, Jeffrey D. Frey

Student Scholarship

Leadership sustainability ultimately rests in the hands of the leader. Critical incident interviews were conducted with twenty "sustainable" and ten "unsustainable" Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of diverse nonprofit organizations, as identified by trusted third party raters. Interviews were also conducted with fifteen spouses from this group of thirty. In addition, the CEOs’ organizations’ IRS Form 990 data was analyzed. A true focus on the organization’s mission, mastery over their relationships, and self-care significantly differentiated the sustainable CEOs from the unsustainable. With no significant differences in demographics, or personal and organizational pressures, the CEO’s perspective and actions directly impacted their capability …

Appointment Systems Under Service Level Constraints, David CHEN, Rowan WANG, Zhenzhen YAN, Saif BENJAAFAR, Oualid JOUINI 2016 Singapore Management University

Appointment Systems Under Service Level Constraints, David Chen, Rowan Wang, Zhenzhen Yan, Saif Benjaafar, Oualid Jouini

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We consider a new model of appointment scheduling where customers are given the earliest possible appointment times under the service level constraint that the expected waiting time of each individual customer cannot exceed a given threshold. We apply the theory of majorization to analytically characterize the structure of the optimal appointment schedule. We show that, the optimal inter-appointment times increase with the order of arrivals. That is, the optimal inter-arrival time between two customers later in the arrival process is longer than that between two customers earlier in the arrival process. We study the limiting behavior of our system, and …

A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz 2016 Washington University in St. Louis

A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

At heart every trader loves volatility; this is where return on investment comes from, this is what drives the proverbial “positive alpha.” As a trader, understanding the probabilities related to the volatility of prices is key, however if you could also predict future prices with reliability the world would be your oyster. To this end, I have achieved three goals with this dissertation, to develop a model to predict future short term prices (direction and magnitude), to effectively test this by generating consistent profits utilizing a trading model developed for this purpose, and to write a paper that anyone with …

Illegitimate Tasks As An Impediment To Job Satisfaction And Intrinsic Motivation: Moderated Mediation Effects Of Gender And Effort-Reward Imbalance, Rachel Omansky, Erin M. Eatough, Marcus J. Fila

Publications and Research

The current work examines a contemporary workplace stressor that has only recently been introduced into the literature: illegitimate tasks. Illegitimate tasks are work tasks that violate identity role norms about what can reasonably be expected from an employee in a given position. Although illegitimate tasks have been linked to employee well-being in past work, we know little about the potential explanatory mechanisms linking illegitimate tasks to work-relevant negative psychological states. Using a sample of 213 US-based employees of mixed occupations and a cross-sectional design, the present study examines job satisfaction and intrinsic motivation as outcomes of illegitimate tasks. Additionally, we …

Patron Activity Monitoring And Privacy Protection, Sam Kome 2016 The Claremont Colleges

Patron Activity Monitoring And Privacy Protection, Sam Kome

Library Staff Publications and Research

Library building usage data are weak. Electronic resource usage data are weak. We conduct occasional headcounts and receive sketchy COUNTER reports. These data lack needed specificity and can’t be correlated to each other, e.g.; what resources do the early birds who sit in the north commons use? What if we knew to the minute and foot how many patrons occupied the building and where they sat? What if we also knew the electronic resources those same patrons used whether or not they were in the building? And what if we could perfectly protect their privacy? We can. This presentation will …

Airline Pilot Supply In The Us: Factors Influencing The Collegiate Pilot Pipeline, Rebecca Lutte, Kent Lovelace 2016 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Airline Pilot Supply In The Us: Factors Influencing The Collegiate Pilot Pipeline, Rebecca Lutte, Kent Lovelace

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

In the era following the First Officer Qualification (FOQ) rule change, regional airlines are struggling to meet hiring needs. Prior to the rule change, pilots were willing to fly for regional airlines at low pay as a stepping-stone to a career at major airlines. Since the rule change, higher minimum qualifications requiring a greater investment for aspiring pilots appear to have impacted the appeal of this career path. This study explores that claim with the purpose of understanding the impact of the FOQ rule change on the career aspirations of collegiate aviation flight students and examining student perceptions of the …

Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez 2016 Kennesaw State University

Capital Structure In The Family Firm: Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Sources And Family Dynamics, Diego G. Velez

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

How a company structures its capital greatly affects its strategic options and its strategic decisions according to contemporary thinking. However, while there is ample literature on how publicly held companies’ capital should be structured, less is known about private companies. Additionally, one or more members of a single family typically own the majority of private companies, and unlike public companies, family dynamics influence these firms’ non-financial and financial goals and strategic decisions. This overlap of family dynamics into the business arena complicates conventional approaches or at least makes conventional approaches more difficult to apply.

This dissertation focuses on privately held, …

Recognizing And Exploiting New Opportunities In Times Of Chaos And Unintended Impacts, Ryan Matthews 2016 Kennesaw State University

Recognizing And Exploiting New Opportunities In Times Of Chaos And Unintended Impacts, Ryan Matthews

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Select entrepreneurs are successful for a reason. They have been able to use their alertness and prior knowledge, among other skill sets, to identify and exploit new opportunities. However, when new opportunities are identified outside of their area of expertise, will they choose to pursue these opportunities, or stick to the behaviors that are most comfortable? While several studies have been conducted looking at the characteristics of the entrepreneur, or the experiences faced by the entrepreneur, there is a gap in the current literature when combining these two elements. The current literature lacks an understanding as to how the environment …

Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski

William & Mary Business Law Review

A great amount of revenue generated by businesses in the global economy can be linked to the trafficking and enslavement of human beings. Yet, the current discourse on human trafficking fails to recognize the magnitude of benefit consumers, businesses, and economies gain from the work of forced and trafficked labor. Moreover, the limited efforts that seek to address this situation have focused on ways to encourage businesses to voluntarily adopt more socially responsible practices. These measures have had only limited success, and are generally believed to be in tension with the for-profit purposes of businesses. Hence, the task of convincing …
