Amazon's Superior Innovation: A Study Of Amazon's Corporate Structure, Ceo, And Reasons Behind Why It Has Become The Most Innovative Company In Today's Market., Daniel J. Rivet

Honors Theses and Capstones

Amazon is one of today’s most powerful companies. The convenience of Amazon.com and the hot new products that Amazon is creating has skyrocketed Amazon to the top of the list of successful and innovative businesses. Looking at Amazon from the outside in, the question of “What drives Amazon to be so successful?” stands out. First thoughts are answers like “CEO, Jeff Bezos” or “it’s ability to innovate”. Yes, those are certainly major factors in the success of a company of this stature, but it is more complex than that. This study will answer the question, “How does Jeff Bezos’ leadership …

Invisible Bosses For Invisible Workers, Or Why The Sharing Economy Is Actually Minimally Disruptive, Deepa Das Acevedo 2017 Emory University School of Law

Invisible Bosses For Invisible Workers, Or Why The Sharing Economy Is Actually Minimally Disruptive, Deepa Das Acevedo

Faculty Articles

Because the idea that sharing economy companies operate as invisible bosses is central to many critiques of this new approach to labor exchange, Part I begins by explaining just what it is about their authority that makes it “invisible.” Part II extends this discussion to two earlier developments that, like the sharing economy, also significantly transformed the way Americans work: the franchise explosion of the 1950s and the spread of the independent contractor model in the late twentieth century. This article is the first to offer a detailed comparison of work practices used by sharing economy companies, franchises, and some …

Millennials Managed: How Millennials Perceive And Value Implicit Leadership Traits, Timothy P. Miller 2017 Georgia Southern University

Millennials Managed: How Millennials Perceive And Value Implicit Leadership Traits, Timothy P. Miller

Honors College Theses

This project focuses on how Millennials (born between the early 1980s and early 2000s) perceive and value the implicit leadership traits of managers in today’s business environment. The goal is to show that millennials perceive several implicit leadership traits such as Relationship-Oriented Leadership, Trust, Knowledge Demonstration, and Individualism as favorable while perceiving Justice Orientation and Confrontation as traits that bear negative consequences for job effectiveness and satisfaction. The research was done by distributing a survey to the National Millennials Community, a national organization comprised of over 200 members that span across the entire country, as well as a Georgia Southern …

Response Pattern Analysis: Assuring Data Integrity In Extreme Research Settings, Lisa Jones Christensen, Enno Siemsen, Oana Branzei, Madhu Viswanathan 2017 Brigham Young University - Provo

Response Pattern Analysis: Assuring Data Integrity In Extreme Research Settings, Lisa Jones Christensen, Enno Siemsen, Oana Branzei, Madhu Viswanathan

Faculty Publications

Research summary: Strategy scholars increasingly conduct research in nontraditional contexts. Such efforts often require the assistance of third-party intermediaries who understand local culture, norms, and language. This reliance on intermediation in primary or secondary data collection can elicit agency breakdowns that call into question the reliability, analyzability, and interpretability of responses. Herein, we investigate the causes and consequences of intermediary bias in the form of faked data and we offer Response Pattern Analysis as a statistical solution for identifying and removing such problematic data. By explicating the effect, illustrating how we detected it, and performing a controlled field experiment in …

Being Native American In Business: Culture, Identity, And Authentic Leadership In Modern American Indian Enterprises, Daniel Daniel Stewart, Amy K. Verbos, Carolyn Birmingham, Stephanie L. Black, Joseph Gladstone 2017 Gonzaga University

Being Native American In Business: Culture, Identity, And Authentic Leadership In Modern American Indian Enterprises, Daniel Daniel Stewart, Amy K. Verbos, Carolyn Birmingham, Stephanie L. Black, Joseph Gladstone

Management Faculty Publications (Archived)

Tribally-owned American Indian enterprises provide a unique cross-cultural setting for emerging Native American business leaders. This paper examines the manner in which American Indian leaders negotiate the boundaries between their indigenous organizations and the non-indigenous communities in which they do business. Through a series of qualitative interviews, we find that American Indian business leaders fall back on a strong sense of “self”, which allows them to maintain effective leadership across boundaries. This is highly consistent with theories of authentic leadership. Furthermore, we find that leaders define self through their collective identity, which is heavily influenced by tribal affiliation and tribal …

An Investigation Of Service Quality Within Irish Franchised Motor Dealerships, Clive Atkinson 2017 Department of Process, Energy and Transport Engineering, Cork Institute of Technology, Cork, Ireland.

An Investigation Of Service Quality Within Irish Franchised Motor Dealerships, Clive Atkinson

Theses

This study investigates service quality within franchised motor dealerships from the perspective of thirty-eight persons working in the roles of Dealer Principal, After-Sales Manager or Service Manager in dealerships operating under the Volkswagen group of brands in Ireland (VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda). With approximately 2.3 million cars on Irish roads, more than two thirds of the Irish adult population encounter car service experiences on a regular basis. Regardless of brand or dealership type, the quality of vehicle service experience is paramount for customer retention. Despite this, however, service quality within Irish motor dealerships remains an under-explored area. Qualitative analysis …

A Corporate Ethical Compass Tool To Measure Public Relations Decision Making, Lian Qing Luo 2017 Technological University Dublin

A Corporate Ethical Compass Tool To Measure Public Relations Decision Making, Lian Qing Luo

Masters

Corporate Public Relations (PR) Ethics is always a top research topic in theory and practice as PR practitioners often have numerous ethical choices to make when addressing controversial issues. However, how to quantify or measure the ethical alternatives of PR decision making and help public relations practitioners make more ethically correct decisions is an open problem. To address this problem, this thesis proposes the PR "Ethical Compass" as a measuring tool or technique to help corporations justify and evaluate the consequences of their ethical public relations decision making. To investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the Ethical Compass technique, qualitative …

Entrepreneurship Inside And Out: Three Essays Exploring The Interplay Between Hybrid Entrepreneurs And Their Organizational Employee Roles, David Ross Marshall 2017 University of Mississippi

Entrepreneurship Inside And Out: Three Essays Exploring The Interplay Between Hybrid Entrepreneurs And Their Organizational Employee Roles, David Ross Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing body of research focuses on undertaking new venture creation while remaining employed in existing organizations. Known as hybrid/part-time entrepreneurship, scholars suggest most entrepreneurs engage in entrepreneurship in a part-time capacity. As such, there exists an interesting space for the study of a new form of interrole dynamics: employee and entrepreneurial role interactions. Through three essays, I conceptually and empirically explore the effects of engaging in hybrid entrepreneurship on outcomes associated with employee and entrepreneurial roles. In Essay One I present a theoretical model of role enrichment from entrepreneurial to employee roles. Specifically, I propose that individuals engaged in …

Bringing Talent Off The Bench And Into The Game: The Underrepresentation Of Women In The Boardroom, Rachel Orbach 2017 J.D. Candidate, Fordham University School of Law, 2017

Bringing Talent Off The Bench And Into The Game: The Underrepresentation Of Women In The Boardroom, Rachel Orbach

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

While women have expanded their footprint in corporate America in recent years, they are still underrepresented in the upper echelons of corporate governance, specifically in boardrooms, which dictate the direction of a company. At the current rate, it will take more than four decades before women’s representation on corporate boards reaches parity with that of men. Women face obstacles that make it difficult to rise in the ranks of corporate America. This can be attributed to numerous factors that collectively burden women with expectations that are at odds with success. These factors include low representation of women in traditional pipelines …

What's Black And White And Not Read All Over?: An Examination Of The Evolving Landscape Of Newspapers Through The Lens Of The New York Times, Anne Reiber 2017 University of Central Florida

What's Black And White And Not Read All Over?: An Examination Of The Evolving Landscape Of Newspapers Through The Lens Of The New York Times, Anne Reiber

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The research and statistics gathered in this thesis begin in 2000. Newspapers began experiencing change due to technology before 2000. However, the information necessary to complete this thesis only goes back to that year. Since the year 2000, the newspaper industry has struggled to adapt to the age of ever-changing technology. Newspapers across the US, including large and well-established publications have been forced to find new strategies that allow them to keep up with new digital technologies. The New York Times was the focus of this study, but it is only one part of a very large industry. However, it …

Driven To Dishonesty: The Effects Of Commuting On Self-Regulatory Depletion And Unethical Behavior, Matthew Griffith 2017 University of Central Florida

Driven To Dishonesty: The Effects Of Commuting On Self-Regulatory Depletion And Unethical Behavior, Matthew Griffith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most people must commute to and from work each day, yet little research has examined this critical time between home and work and the potential spillover effects of commuting on employees' subsequent workplace behavior. Drawing on self-regulation theory and the commuting stress literature, I propose that stressful driving conditions on the way to work (e.g., bad weather, traffic congestion, long routes) can cause employees to subsequently behave unethically at work. Specifically, I suggest this occurs through a depletion of self-regulation as resources are consumed while driving under stress and thus unavailable for deterring tempting, unethical behavior. I test this mediation …

Putting The Horse Before The Cart: The Influence Of Trigger Events On Justice Perceptions And Work Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, John L. Cotton 2017 Marquette University

Putting The Horse Before The Cart: The Influence Of Trigger Events On Justice Perceptions And Work Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, John L. Cotton

Management Faculty Research and Publications

To date very little research on organizational justice and work attitudes has focused on what starts the process that leads to these perceptions. A considerable amount of organizational research is focused on the end result (e.g., employees’ perceptions, attitudes, or behaviors), which can become difficult to effectively manage or change after-the-fact in a timely or productive manner (Tekleab et al., 2005). In this paper, two studies are conducted that explore a variety of events employees might notice and how they influence workplace outcomes. Study One explores 16 trigger events from prior research and surveys employees in a manufacturing organization about …

Effect Of Emotional Experiences On Emotional Intelligence Among U.S. Military Leaders, Robert S. Crosby 2017 Walden University

Effect Of Emotional Experiences On Emotional Intelligence Among U.S. Military Leaders, Robert S. Crosby

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Military veterans may have constructive skills and abilities in emotional intelligence (EI) that assist in managing emergencies, crises, and relationships. However, according to U.S. government-employment statistics, the joblessness rate of military veterans is up to 400% higher than that of nonveterans. The paucity of research conducted on the relationship between EI and prolonged intense emotional experiences, such as those experienced during military deployments, lessens the abilities of these veterans to market their EI skills in the pursuit of employment. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental survey study was to observe, evaluate, and compare the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale …

Environmental, Social, And Governance Risk And Performance: Implications For Audit And Corporate Governance Research, Jenna J. Burke 2017 Bentley University

Environmental, Social, And Governance Risk And Performance: Implications For Audit And Corporate Governance Research, Jenna J. Burke

2017

This dissertation examines oversight of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) related risk and performance. These considerations are a new piece of business language, and are crucial in monitoring and evaluating the sustainable impact of modern corporations. The dissertation is comprised of three archival studies, which together contribute to an emerging accounting literature at the intersection of audit and corporate governance. The first study uses hand-collected data on voluntary board-level committees that oversee ESG-related issues to investigate the performance implications of these committees. This paper presents a theoretical framework and methodology that incorporate the committee’s role in shared value creation and …

What To Do Amid Disruption? Ethical Climate And Trust As Determinants Of Virtual Team Member Effort, Kenneth Mullane 2017 Bentley University

What To Do Amid Disruption? Ethical Climate And Trust As Determinants Of Virtual Team Member Effort, Kenneth Mullane

2017

Although the effects of ethical climate and trust on individual behavior have been investigated within organizations, understanding how this relationship unfolds within virtual teams has been largely overlooked. In response to this gap, I use social exchange theory to integrate research on ethical climate and trust to develop a model of individual virtual team member effort. Specifically, when virtual teams experience an event that disrupts existing work procedures and workflow, this can negatively affect levels of trust between teammates and jeopardize member contributions to the team. I argue that virtual team member perceptions of a caring (i.e., other-focused) ethical climate …
