A typical wildland firefighting organization is structured hierarchically, much like the military. Thus, it follows that one would expect to see strong evidence of command and control (i.e., directive and transactional) when studying leadership behaviors in this kind of organization. However, a successful, yet paradoxical type of leadership was found at the Alabama Forestry Commission. In this study, we argue that the managerial mindset that drives excellence in team performance is driven by sharing (delegating) responsibility to those who have the knowledge, skills, and abilities; thereby allowing the authority to migrate down the chain of command. Organizational growth and vision can outpace leadership development, which ultimately creates frustration and decline in leadership, followership, and teamwork. To counter regression, organizations must determine the factors that hinder leadership development while creating pathways towards organizational success. Research indicates that church attendance in America is in decline, but there are exceptions to this national trend. A case study of one of the fastest growing churches in America reveals a correlation between intentionally fostering a culture of leadership development and one’s ability to continue seizing available growth opportunities. Current scholarship on organizational practices that foster a sense of care and collaboration in work relationships has yet to fully account for the potential misalignment between the goals of a given practice and how it is actually experienced. To address this issue, we develop a theoretical framework of experiential organizing, which we define as an iterative process through which positive relational and bureaucratic goals of a practice are pursued via symbolically and experientially oriented work. Self-Leadership And Action-State Orientation: The Role Of Vertical And Horizontal Individualism, Ana L. Kazan, Kevin Knotts, Jeffery D. Houghton, Christopher P. Neck

Two studies were conducted to examine the relationship between self-leadership and action-state orientations. Study 1 applied confirmatory factor analyses to data from a U.S. sample to examine the discriminant validity between the two constructs. Results indicate that self-leadership and action-state orientation are indeed two separate constructs. Study 2 advanced and tested hypotheses examining the roles of horizontal and vertical individualism in moderating the relationship between self-leadership and action-state orientation. Analyses of data from 154 Brazilian subjects provide support for the hypothesized relationship between self-leadership and action-state orientation. There is much to learn from the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) who remains at

the forefront of international arts practice despite the temporary loss of capital

infrastructure due to a tragic fire. This resilience is in part due to BAC’s

organisational model and investment strategy; but these aspects are only as strong

as organisational culture and community support allow them to be, these are

much harder to design and more nuanced in application

The majority of managers and leaders do not advance to postconventional stages of ego development (Boyd & Laske 2018), yet increased leader effectiveness has been correlated with the quality of personal meaning-making acquired at postconventional levels of maturity. This dissertation provides an original contribution to knowledge regarding the differences in personal meaning-making structure which are found by comparing conventional- with postconventional-stage leaders. This study focuses on the elements which make up a leader’s conative capability i.e. their conative intelligence and their conative complexity. Impact assessments are an important component of a better regulation programme—an initiative of the European Commission launched to improve the quality and transparency of the EU (European Union) law-making process. In the current article, I take a closer look at the Impact Assessment (IA) issued by the European Commission together with a Directive proposing a 40% obligatory female representation on the boards of directors in European public companies. In the IA, the Commission defined an improvement of corporate governance as one of the objectives to be achieved by the Directive. Beyond Greening: The Challenges To Adopting Sustainability In Higher Education., Catherine Hooey, Alicia Mason, James Triplett

It is common for colleges and universities to include sustainability in their mission statements and strategic plans. On many campuses, however, sustainability is associated with green practices only, rather than the comprehensive integration of social equity, economic, and environmental principles on which the concept was founded. Here, Hooey et al examine the obstacles to the comprehensive adoption of sustainability in institutions of higher education, in general, and to suggest a conceptual framework of a sustainability culture as one most appropriate for the more effective incorporation of comprehensive practices.
