Utah has become an unlikely leader in regional planning through a voluntary partnership of key leaders, agencies, local government, and the general public. Given that regional planning efforts around the nation have generally evoked strong reactions from residents concerned about losing local control, the success of Envision Utah—the organization that emerged as a key driver of regional planning in Utah—in building a consensus around regional growth management holds lessons for other regions.

Libya, which is well over 80% urban, is placed in the upper echelons of the most urbanized countries in the world as the majority of its citizens now live in urban areas of different sizes and functions. However, when rapid urban growth trends were examined more closely, serious problems come to the fore, depicting key challenges to the sustainability of both urban landscapes and elements of the natural environment. Specifically, unregulated urban growth and the proliferation of scattered housing in the urban fringe areas of many cities have resulted in land use conflicts and serious ecological problems.

To achieve true sustainability, planners must balance the interests of environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. In a critically changing, complex ecosystem such as Louisiana’s coast, challenges to achieve the perfect equilibrium are further compounded. Following the logic of emerging adaptive co-management literature, the planning framework for Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan could be transformed into a more collaborative, democratic process. Adaptive co-management is a regime which provides power to local citizens, often in possession of invaluable traditional ecological knowledge. The urban forest holds several important positions within the built and unbuilt environments. Those positions include economic, health, sustainability, quality of life measures, and overall protection of the environment, including air, water, and soil. The points are highlighted by Wolf (2005, 2007), McPherson (2005), and Rowntree & Nowak (1991). This dissertation was an exploratory and descriptive study on the revitalization efforts of LeClaire, Iowa. Two community surveys, one business survey, and one leader interview survey were conducted to collect data from distinct stakeholder groups, consisting of LeClaire residents, visitors to LeClaire, residents throughout Scott County Iowa, business owners in LeClaire, and LeClaire leaders. Emergent results from quantitative and qualitative data identified that females are more concerned with revitalization and sustainability efforts than males, residents throughout Scott County are concerned with revitalization and sustainability, LeClaire residents are more concerned about the viability of their downtown than residents in other communities, …

The University at Albany conducted an examination of campus commuting patterns and behaviors over an eighteen month period. The components included a review of existing options, the development of GIS maps indicating origin points of commutes, a survey of campus perceptions of barriers to using alternative transportation and on-time tracking of mass transit offerings. The study revealed that the success of alternative transportation is hindered by limitations in bus routes and frequency in scheduling, the need for commuters to make additional trips outside their commute route and a distrust of bus reliability.

This studio report explores community service learning in the graduate urban design studio taught in the in Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and instructed by Professor Frank Sleegers. The project will began with a visioning workshop, conducted to engage community members in the shaping of project goals and objectives within the project area of downtown Springfield. In 2005 the city of New Orleans experienced catastrophic flooding as a result of the failure of the federal levee system following Hurricane Katrina. This was an immediate disaster that evolved into a longer-term crisis as the city, state, and national government struggled to respond to the event. This study focuses on one part of managing crisis: meaning making.
