Missed Opportunity In S. Kingston, Chester Smolski Dec 1981

Missed Opportunity In S. Kingston, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"They were well dressed, although informally. They came with their spouses. They were articulate, educated, and generally did not raise their voices. They looked like solid middle-class Americans--homemakers, civic-minded, and concerned citizens, so it was difficult to understand their reaction to the proposed housing development."

Providence: Arts Can Improve The Image, Chester Smolski Nov 1981

Providence: Arts Can Improve The Image, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Providence has an image problem. Whether one asks as state resident or a Providence native about our capital city, the response is usually negative. And the image of our city held by non-Rhode Islanders is one that should not make us proud."

Minorities, Cities To Bear Brunt Of Federal Cutbacks, Chester Smolski Oct 1981

Minorities, Cities To Bear Brunt Of Federal Cutbacks, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The sad story of the 4,500 Rhode Island families whose welfare benefits will be reduced or ended with this current 1982 fiscal year should make us profoundly aware of the plight of the poor. In the next few months government-mandated action will bring the federal budget closer to balance. Not yet noticed but soon to be realized, will be the impact on minority poor, and on the place where most of them live--the city."

Meet A Leader In Urban Renovation, Chester Smolski Oct 1981

Meet A Leader In Urban Renovation, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"This city of 35,000 residents in a small, rural county of Piedmont in north-central South Carolina has become a leader in urban innovation--innovations that have been implemented and are now starting to pay off."

Some Good Things Are Happening, Chester Smolski Oct 1981

Some Good Things Are Happening, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It is easy to be critical and to single out the wrongs of a society: the reporting of such wrongs is what sells newspapers. Too often the good things that happen are not recognized nor deemed newsworthy, and the result is they go unnoticed. So it was more than refreshing to read recently in these papers about some very positive actions on the part of a private citizen, a small business, and yes, even a politician--actions that are helping to make our communities better places in which to live."

Inflation Takes A Toll On The Poor, Chester Smolski Sep 1981

Inflation Takes A Toll On The Poor, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Everyone is keenly aware these days of the declining value of the dollar and the inability of the average person to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Inflation, an insidious ailment of the economy, strikes all people alike, whether they be working families, single people, elderly or poor."

Accepting The Townhouse Idea Requires New Attitudes, Chester Smolski Sep 1981

Accepting The Townhouse Idea Requires New Attitudes, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"To change actions is easy; to change attitudes is more difficult. This is a truism that one finds whether one deals with race relations, sexual equality or ethnic stereotypes. It is also true in housing."

Downtown Grubbiness As Seen By A Visitor, Chester Smolski Sep 1981

Downtown Grubbiness As Seen By A Visitor, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"This is a thank-you note to Betty Lyndon, of Bordentown, New Jersey, for taking the time to send a letter to the editor of this newspaper concerning a problem in the downtown of our capital city. The letter appeared in the morning and afternoon papers together with an editorial; that evening the police were working to resolve the problem. Perhaps this is the technique that needs to be used to get things done in the city."

City's Capital Center Plan Too Vital To Be Sidetracked, Chester Smolski Aug 1981

City's Capital Center Plan Too Vital To Be Sidetracked, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Three major criticisms of the Capital Center have emerged as a result of public hearings being held on this proposed development for downtown Providence. These criticisms are focused on: 1. relocation of the new railway station 1,200 feet north of the present Union Station; 2. elimination of the connection for a through East Bay-West Bay rail service; and 3. construction of a boulevard that would parallel the present railroad tracks. All of these criticisms have merit."

Downtown Shopping By The Elderly, Chester Smolski Jun 1981

Downtown Shopping By The Elderly, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It was their last meeting of the year. Some came to hear a lecture on United States foreign policy, some to study French or Shakespeare, some to hear a discussion on Iran, and some came to do line dancing. It was also an opportunity to meet friends, have lunch together, and, perhaps, do some shopping. Who are these actively involved people? They are the elderly."

Assessing Economic Impacts Of Urban Recreation Development: Lowell National Historical Park, John Mullin, Meir Gross, James Palmer

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

This article describes a pragmatic approach to assessing the economic impact of major urban recreation development. It is based on an assessment of the impact of the Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP) on the metropolitan area of Lowell, Massachusetts. This study was conducted by the authors in response to the National Park Services' (NPS) need to anticipate impacts resulting from the creation of a new National Park in Lowell. More specifically, the NPS requested an analysis of the likely impact that the LNHP would have on economic development, employment, land use patterns, and local citizens. The assessment was prepared under …

Elderly Can Bring Benefits To Downtown, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The elderly are becoming an increasingly influential group in our society. Recent outpourings of mail and telegrams to representatives in Washington in response to government-proposed cuts in Social Security underscored this ability to influence chance. Congressional members are listening to the growing numbers of elderly who are making their voices heard through their votes."

A Visit To Litter 'Graveyard' Might Resurrect Bottle Bill, Chester Smolski Apr 1981

A Visit To Litter 'Graveyard' Might Resurrect Bottle Bill, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Thousands of people drive over it every day and never even notice it. Even when identified as being located at the junction of Clifford, Friendship and Chestnut Streets at the edge of downtown Providence, few would know where to find it. More people would know it as the parcel of land situated between Leo's and the Met Cafe, surrounded by a broken chain-link fence and a favorite depository for "dead" bottles. Inconsequential as this lot appears to be, it presents an opportunity and a problem in the capital city.

The Impact Of National Socialist Policies Upon Local City Planning In Pre-War Germany (1933-1939): The Rhetoric And The Reality, John Mullin

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

This paper is a review and analysis of the influence of the national government upon local city planning during the pre-war years of National Socialism (1933-1939). The paper begins with a brief overview of the critical aspects of city planning during both the Wilhelmian years (1871-1918) and the Weimar era (1918-1932). These aspects are reviewed in the context of their contributions to the city planning profession in general and to the German experience in particular. The paper then reviews the influence of ideology on city planning activities and follows with an explanation of the "state of the city" at the …

"To Arouse Interest In The Outdoors" : The Literary Career Of Enos Mills, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Enos Mills (1870-1922), a self-taught natural historian, had four related careers: mountain guide in Estes Park, Colorado; innkeeper, promoting Colorado tourism; lobbyist and spokesman for national parks; writer of books and articles on the outdoors. Mills found his greatest success as a writer. The author discusses his writings in depth, the influence of John Muir, Mills's activity in creating Rocky Mountain National Park, and his pioneering work with the nature guide concept in the national parks. His writings and career influenced the development of American attitudes toward nature. Based on Mills's writings, secondary sources, contemporary newspapers, and the Enos Mills …
