Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist Jun 2011

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18th 1980, the ecosystem of Spirit Lake was dramatically altered and, since then, there has been a significant increase in the amount of primary productivity in the south end of the lake. The focus of this research is to identify land cover types surrounding Spirit Lake which, in the future, could be used to identify possible nutrient point sources flowing into surface waters entering the lake. The watershed pouring into the lake is covered by nitrogen-fixing vegetation that could potentially be contributing to the increased productivity. The work completed for …

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung Jun 2011

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Through energy consumptions, recycling, and different kinds of operations, numerous facilities are disposing and releasing a significant amount of chemicals every day. Within all those chemicals, some could be functioned as fertilizers while most are toxic, threatening both the environment and people’s health. The purpose of this project is to find out the areas with relatively serious toxic concentration in the south part of the Puget Sound region (Pierce, King, and Kitsap County), as well as who are the most affected people in those areas. The general public who are interested in environmental issues might get the idea of …

The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog Jun 2011

The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens caused the bathymetry of Spirit Lake to change drastically, resulting in an increase in surface area and a decrease in average depth. Subsequently, Spirit Lake is experiencing an increase in productivity. This analysis examines concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus obtained from sediment samples collected over the summer of 2010, as well as aquatic plant height data, in order to identify sources of the lake’s increasing productivity. The results of these analyses will be used as part of a larger nutrient cycling model examining changes in the lake over time.

Depression In Pierce County, K.D. Carlyle Jun 2011

Depression In Pierce County, K.D. Carlyle

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:This project was thought up through my interest in Psychology. Since I cannot actually map physical locations of where depression comes from, I was interested in possible demographics that could cause (not always does) depression. I was able to compile a list of contributing demographics through a literature review. Through my literature review, demographics that were highlighted were that of socioeconomic status or social standing (class). Those with a lower SES were more likely than those who had a higher SES for depression. The purpose of this research was to be able to identify areas within Pierce County that …

Ideal Apartments For International Students In University Of Washington, Tacoma, Sing Wong

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:

Beginning a new journey as an international student in a foreign country is no easy task, the same story applies to the international students in University of Washington, Tacoma. Yet, due to current inadequate supply of student housing units and the lack of a domestic host family housing program, international students in UW, Tacoma face even harsher challenges when looking for a place to live. Without many options, most international students would, therefore, choose to rent apartment units that are within reasonable proximity to the campus and other amenities as their homes. However, many international students might be unfamiliar …
