Keeping It Local : Geographic Patterns Of University Attendance, Daniel Edwards
Keeping It Local : Geographic Patterns Of University Attendance, Daniel Edwards
Dr Daniel Edwards
The university attendance habits of Australians, in a geographic sense, are different from those in the United States, the United Kingdom and many other western countries. Australian university students are less likely to move between major cities to study. In this article, university attendance patterns of Melbourne government school Year 12 completers in 2004 are presented. The article examines the link between location of school and location of university attended among this cohort. The article finds that in addition to this, within a large metropolitan area, university campuses attract a substantial share of the university-attending population who completed their schooling …

The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
Leandro Benmergui
This article explores the construction of publicly financed low-income housing complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1960s. These housing developments were possible thanks to the arrival of foreign economic and technical assistance from the Alliance for Progress. Urban scholars, politicians, diplomats and urbanists of the Americas sought to promote middle-class habits, mass consumption and moderate political behaviour, especially among the poor, by expanding access to homeownership and ‘decent’ living conditions for a burgeoning urban population. As a result, the history of low-income housing should be understood within broader transnational discourses and practices about the …

Visual Tours Of Housing Projects In Buenos Aires And Rio De Janeiro, 1960s And 1970s (Multimedia Companion To The Special Issue: Transnational Urbanism In The Americas), Leandro Benmergui

The Multimedia Companion for the special issue of Urban History: 'Transnational Urbanism in the Americas', is an editorial project of Urban History’s North American Editorial Board. The emerging transnational paradigm raises many interesting possibilities for the historical study of cities. As the articles in the special issue suggest, transnationalism challenges us to map out the patterns of human life in new ways as they cross and construct cities, nations, and other crucial formations. Even as this new paradigm is causing a fundamental rethinking of our scholarship, the internet and the World Wide Web are also challenging our current modes of …

Evaluating Transit-Oriented Development Using A Sustainability Framework: Lessons From Perth’S Network City, John Renne
Evaluating Transit-Oriented Development Using A Sustainability Framework: Lessons From Perth’S Network City, John Renne
John L Renne
Planners and urban designers across the globe are promoting transit oriented development (TOD) to encourage sustainable precincts around public transport stations. TODs are compact, mixed-use developments that facilitate walking, bicycling, and use of public transport through its urban design. This chapter presents a method to evaluate the sustainability of TODs based on six aspects of outcomes, including 1. Travel Behaviour, 2. The Local Economy, 3. The Natural Environment, 4. The Built Environment, 5. The Social Environment, and 6. The Policy Context. Data were collected in five rail precincts across Perth, Western Australia. The major goal of the study was to …

An Index For Assessing Demographic Inequalities In Cumulative Environmental Hazards With Application To Los Angeles, California, Bhavna Shamasunder, Jason G. Su, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Bill M. Jesdale, Amy D. Kyle, Michael Jerrett
An Index For Assessing Demographic Inequalities In Cumulative Environmental Hazards With Application To Los Angeles, California, Bhavna Shamasunder, Jason G. Su, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Bill M. Jesdale, Amy D. Kyle, Michael Jerrett

Researchers in environmental justice contend that low-income communities and communities of color face greater impacts from environmental hazards. This is also of concern for policy makers. In this context, our paper has two principal objectives. First, we propose a method for creating an index capable of summarizing racial−ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities from the impact of cumulative environmental hazards. Second, we apply the index to Los Angeles County to illustrate the potential applications and complexities of its implementation. Individual environmental inequality indices are calculated based on unequal shares of environmental hazards for racial−ethnic groups and socioeconomic positions. The illustrated hazards include …
