For young people with disabilities, the transition from secondary education into adulthood can be challenging to navigate. Key services and supports may be lost, daily life and routines may change, and new responsibilities and expectations emerge. These transitions can be particularly challenging for youth in rural areas who face additional transportation, education, and housing barriers.

Centers for Independent Living (CILs), like Ability 1^st in Northern Florida, provide valuable and impactful youth transition services to both the rural and urban communities they serve. There are clear mental health treatment disparities between rural and urban communities, especially in accessing quality mental health care and youth suicide prevention services. In 2021, the CDC reported an increase in youth mental health concern rates and alarmingly, a rise in youth suicidality rates. Considering these trends, and that rural people already experience higher suicide rates, the status of caregivers’ readiness and ability to access mental health services for their children must be examined. This dissertation examines wellbeing, mental health, and natural resource (NR) dependency in rural Utah. The following questions are asked: How do wellbeing and mental health vary throughout the state of Utah, including by rural-urban location? What concerns do applied practitioners have regarding mental health in rural parts of the state? How do chronic stress and social dislocation contribute to mental health outcomes in rural NR dependent communities in the state? Four studies were conducted to pursue these research questions.
