Investigation One: Bullying Between Older Adults: What is happening in Ontario. Investigation Two: Seniors Anti-bullying Implementation and Evaluation Project

People of all ages can be bullied. The Centre for Elder Research is working with Sheridan faculty member Dr. Kirsten Madsen and Elder Abuse Prevention (ON) to better understand bullying between older adults age 55+ in Ontario. This work is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and aims to support the development of best practices and strategies for this diverse population. Our project aims are to collect data on the prevalence and nature of Senior to Senior bullying in Ontario, and to use this data to create a resource package outlining best practices for seniors …

How young is “too young” when it comes to volunteerism? If you were to look to the majority of research on volunteerism and volunteer opportunities to answer this question, you might conclude that high-school age (or about the age of 15) is when youth should start volunteering. Volunteering research includes the exploration of youth volunteering but, often, the research excludes youth under the age of 15. For example, the 2007 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, uses the age bracket of 15-24 to refer to young people (Hall et al., 2009). The Social Isolation Detection Checklist is a preliminary screening tool that can help you determine if an older adult might be at risk of social isolation. This tool can be completed one on one with an older adult. Alternatively, if you have been working with an older adult for an extended period of time and are familiar with their case history you can use your insider knowledge, intake records and case notes to complete this tool and determine risk. A list of recommendations (referrals) that correspond directly with the various categories in the Detection Tool is also included.
