"Established in 1968 to improve conditions in the barrio of East Los Angeles, the East Los Angeles Community Union has had a pronounced impact on the area, providing social services, helping increase political representation, and, most notably, promoting economic development, particularly through extensive real estate dealings. The history of TELACU is especially significant because it has provided a model for community development in other Mexican-American neighborhoods throughout the Southwest (including Oakland, California; San Antonio, Texas; Embudo, New Mexico; and Phoenix, Arizona).

While the usual discussion about the poverty of the minimum financial security speaks, the authors ask what it could mean for to be living in a secure socio-cultural minimum. The structure of the book is simple. The first part analyzes major forces having an impact on the survivability of civilization as we know it into the twenty-first century. It outlines the challenges we face, including overpopulation, pressure upon the land, migration, ecological damage, and social instability. In part two, we present more detailed discussion of the problem of scarcity and how it relates to conflict. The stories of people and projects in this book come from a program in the Church of the Nazarene called C.A.U.S.E. C.A.U.S.E. is an acronym for College and University students Serving and Enabling. It is a unique short-term program involving college students in ministry around the world. The program is coordinated through International Headquarters for the Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City. They select one particular mission field each year and attempt to make an impact in an area of extreme need.

This collection contains Edward G. Little’s personal and professional work, notes, and photographs as a professor, researcher, and scholar from 1921 until his passing in 1998. Included are handwritten and typed drafts and portions of his book Icelandic Sagas: Crossroads of Myth, History, and Sociology, photographs from Iceland, of family, and of research, a great deal of research notes, as well as papers documenting. Little’s time in the Air Force and other group involvements.
