The Changing Male Role? An Empirical Analysis, Floyd M. Stallings
Masters Theses
The purpose of this project was threefold: first, to review and critique a body of literature on the male sex role, and specifically the male liberation literature; second, to present a discussion of social psychological concepts pertinent to the topic of the male sex role which are often absent in the literature; and third, to conduct an exploratory study to determine if the behaviors and attitudes of the men interviewed were consistent with the themes expounded in the literature.
An open-ended interview schedule based on themes in the male sex role literature was developed. Thirty middle class, married males between …

An Aspect Of The Process Of School Desegregation: The Effects Of Reading Ability Grouping On Social Attractiveness And Peer-Perceived Success, David A. Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
Research on the effects of school desegregation has failed to produce conclusive findings. An over emphasis on the outcomes of school desegregation, usually assessed through the use of standardized test scores, has created a situation in which there exists a paucity of studies of the day to day process of school desegregation: instructional practices, student interaction, and teacher behavior in the classroom. More research on the process of school desegregation is needed if its results or outcomes are to become more interpretable.

A Study Of The Career Education Needs Of Freshman And Senior Students In The Midland Independent School District, Randall S. Braddock
Graduate Theses
This study examined the career education needs of students and obtained information that will be beneficial to those involved in implementing career education into the existing curriculum at the local level. The major problem which this study addressed was the need to gather and evaluate information about learners in terms of their career education needs. Specifically developed for this purpose, the survey test of the Texas Career Education Measurement Series was used to identify student strengths and weaknesses in each of the 9 Basic Learner Outcome Categories for Career Education (Appendix E) and 26 sub-categories. The test was administered to …

International Variation In Metropolitanism: National Integration Into An International System Of Countries As An Important Consideration, Michael Lee Lindsay
International Variation In Metropolitanism: National Integration Into An International System Of Countries As An Important Consideration, Michael Lee Lindsay
Dissertations and Theses
The research reported here is directed toward the determination of whether or not the proportion of a country's population living in cities of 100,000 or more is significantly affected by that country's involvement in trade relations with other countries. The proportion of a country's population living in cities of 100,000 or more was termed its level of metropolitanism. It is proposed that international variation in metropolitanism is a function of, among other things, the country's position relative to other countries in a world system of intersocietal functional linkages. It is argued that one of the best indicators of the functional …
Deprivation Theory And Occult Belief, Bruce Hall
Deprivation Theory And Occult Belief, Bruce Hall
Sociology ETDs
ABSTRACT
This thesis is an investigation of a number of alternative explanations of belief in and activity in various subareas of the occult milieu. These subareas include astrology, spiritualism, satanism and various occult activities such as palm and card reading.
A number of alternative hypotheses concerning the relationships between occult belief and practice and status and psychic deprivation as measured by self-esteem, self-competence and anomie were developed. Alternative explanations which centered around peer influence and religious orthodoxy were also presented. Three principle hypotheses were tested:
1)belief in and activity in various aspects of the occult
will vary inversely as a …
Aging And The Semantic Differential: Semantic Stability In The Measurement Of Social Evaluation, Marilyn Diane Petersen
Aging And The Semantic Differential: Semantic Stability In The Measurement Of Social Evaluation, Marilyn Diane Petersen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the validity of utilizing the same semantic differential test as a measure of social evaluation for persons of different ages. The semantic differential, a rating technique by which judgments of stimuli are made on seven-interval bipolar descriptive continua called "scales", currently receives widespread usage as a measure of attitudes toward aging and the elderly. However, a lack of semantic stability across stimuli and across subjects, known, respectively, as "concept-scale" and "subject-scale" interaction, has been found to occur with the technique in various areas of research. That such a lack of stability might …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Population Density, Density Related Social Factors, And Physical Morbidities, Douglas King Huebner
Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between the number of persons per room in the home and the relative occurrence of stress-related morbidities of hospitalized patients is investigated. The social factors of age, social class, and level of social support also are examined as they relate to both density and morbidity type occurrence. The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. All data were obtained through the facilities of the Health Services Research Center, Kaiser Foundation …
Adjustment Of Persian Students At Utah State University, Homa Aflatouni
Adjustment Of Persian Students At Utah State University, Homa Aflatouni
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Social adjustment of Persian students in terms of their social participation with Americans is analyzed by correlation and multiple regression analyses with six independent variables. The six independent variables are: education, attitude, time, English, social class, and religion. The results of correlation and multiple regression analyses support some of the hypotheses. The significant finding is that the level of education the Persian students completed before coming to the United States, their attitudes toward the Americans, and the length of stay in the United States are the most important factors while other variables are much less useful.
Availability And Perceived Adequacy Of Health Services In Utah, Cheryl L. Thayer
Availability And Perceived Adequacy Of Health Services In Utah, Cheryl L. Thayer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is the general consensus that continuous and comprehensive health care of good quality should be available to all, under conditions that are convenient, comfortable, and not detrimental to the dignity or self-respect of the individual.
This study concerns the adequacy of health services as perceived by persons living in rural, urban, and urbanizing-rural areas of Utah. It is also a study (1) to determine the degree to which various demographics found to be related to differential medical needs in metropolitan areas is related to perception of health services, and (2) to assess the congruence between empirical and perceived availability …

Age And Sex As Influences On The Food Preferences Of Preschool Children, Tish Wilson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A descriptive -exploratory study on the influences of age and sex on the food preferences of preschool children was undertaken to add to the knowledge of the effects of self-selection on the foods chosen and the order in which they were eaten.
Twenty-eight preschool children (fourteen two-year-olds and fourteen four and one-half-year-olds) were given two trials in which they named, selected, and ate foods from a predetermined array of seven food items.
The results indicate that there is a difference in the order in which the children of this study ate the food items. Both age groups selected candy first, …
Some Implications Of Changing Natural Resource Use On Leadership Structure And As A Source Of Conflict In The Bear Lake Area Of Utah And Idaho, William C. Dunaway
Some Implications Of Changing Natural Resource Use On Leadership Structure And As A Source Of Conflict In The Bear Lake Area Of Utah And Idaho, William C. Dunaway
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several problems have arisen in recent years as the Bear Lake area of Utah and Idaho has rapidly changed from an agricultural center to a recreation center. Some of these problems have included increased pollution of the lake, rising taxes, damages through fluctuations in the level of the lake and increased crime and traffic problems.
To test the assumptions and theoretical framework of this study, five hypotheses and three sub-hypotheses were formulated. Basically, these hypotheses stated that changing land and water uses; (1) disrupt the status quo of existing social systems and that incompatible values held by different vested interest …
Social Composition, Interaction And The Success Of High School Football Teams, Jill Kendrick Schneider
Social Composition, Interaction And The Success Of High School Football Teams, Jill Kendrick Schneider
Sociology ETDs
Is there a sociological explanation for the pattern of consistent winning and consistent losing that is found at all levels of football competition as well in the New Mexico high school football program? A study of the 1975 New Mexico high school football season presents evidence that definite performance patterns have persisted over the last ten years and therefore cannot be strictly accounted for on the basis of ability and talent of individual players and coaches. It is hypothesized that the social structure and social interaction of each team were possible factors affecting team performance. Three hypotheses were tested: 1) …

Deviant Self-Concept Among Marijuana Dealers: Examining The Applicability Of Labeling Concepts, Cynthia Madaris
Dissertations and Theses
The subject of this thesis is dope dealing in marijuana. However, the main interest in this topic is not centered on unique behavior patterns of persons engaged in this illegal activity nor is it much concerned with the activity itself. Rather, this study was designed to investigate empirically claims of labeling theorists and deviance theory. Through focused interviews with dealers of marijuana, an inquiry was made into deviant self-concepts on the part of those persons. More specifically, attention centered around the variables of type of dealer (lid or small quantity pound); length of time in dealing business; and contact with …
