Racial Battle Fatigue For Latina/O Students: A Quantitative Perspective, Jeremy D. Franklin, William A. Smith, Man Hung
Racial Battle Fatigue For Latina/O Students: A Quantitative Perspective, Jeremy D. Franklin, William A. Smith, Man Hung
Jeremy D. Franklin
Previous literature demonstrates that as a result of racial microaggressions and hostile campus racial climates, Latina/o students often state they experience psychological, physiological, and behavioral stress responses during and after racialized incidents on campuses. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively test the racial battle fatigue framework for Latina/o students using structural equation modeling. Findings suggest that psychological stress responses for Latinas/os are most impacted by racial microaggressions in the racial battle fatigue framework.

Racial Battle Fatigue And The Miseducation Of Black Men: Racial Microaggressions, Societal Problems, And Environmental Stress, William A. Smith, Man Hung, Jeremy D. Franklin

Black men's lives are racialized contradictions. They are told that contemporary educational and professional institutions—particularly historically White institutions (HWIs)—are places where, through hard work, they can achieve the so-called American dream. However, for far too many Black men, HWIs represent racial climates that are replete with gendered racism, blocked opportunities, and mundane, extreme, environmental stress (MEES). Findings indicate that as educational attainment increases toward college completion, both racial microaggressions and societal problems contribute to more than one third of the …

The Neoliberal University And Agricultural Biotechnology: Reports From The Field, Wilhelm Peekhaus
Wilhelm Peekhaus
Following in the footsteps of a variety of previous research that elaborates on the current state of affairs in academia, this article sets out the argument that neoliberalism and its corresponding iterations of science and technology and research funding policies in this country have implications for the types of knowledge that can be generated within and communicated without contemporary institutions of higher education. Using agricultural biotechnology as the lens through which to focus analysis, the article outlines a number of empirical examples that illustrate how the free flow of knowledge either critical of or not readily appropriated by capital is …

Developments in the global context and in national conditions have stimulated a re-examination of higher education relevance in the context of the increasing role of knowledge in the economic and social life of nations. In general, and such is the case also for Mexico, there are increasing expectations regarding higher education potential contribution to society. In this essay we discuss, in the context of the recent evolution of Mexican higher education, the drivers that are elevating the relevance expectations that Mexicans have of higher education. After that, we elaborate how higher education growth dynamics and the increasing social expectations regarding …
