Young Gay Men And Suicide: A Report Of A Study Exploring The Reasons Which Young Men Give For Suicide Ideation, Ronald Macdonald, Trudi Cooper
Ronald Macdonald
This Perth study indicates that the prevalence of homophobic attitudes and the lack of support for young gay men may be important factors in the very high suicide rate among young males in Australia. The reasons some young gay men gave for their suicide attempts are outlined and other relevant literature is reviewed. This article concludes by providing youth workers with suggestions for effective suicide prevention strategies.

Being True To What We Profess: Management Education And Inquiry - A Black British Perspective, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
The term ‘towards bicultural competence’ in the title of my doctoral thesis: Towards Bicultural Competence: Researching for Personal and Professional Transformations refers to my desire to become competent in negotiating the two cultures (British and African Caribbean) of my dual heritage. The lack of competence which is implied in the title has been a major problem in my personal and professional life and was therefore an important insight thrown up by my research efforts.
The Internet And The Global Prostitution Industry, Donna M. Hughes Dr.
The Internet And The Global Prostitution Industry, Donna M. Hughes Dr.
Donna M. Hughes
The Internet has become the latest place for promoting the global trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and children. This global communication network is being used to promote and engage in the buying and selling of women and children. Agents offer catalogues of mail order brides, with girls as young as 13. Commercial prostitution tours are advertised. Men exchange information on where to find prostitutes and describe how they can be used. After their trips men write reports on how much they paid for women and children and give pornographic descriptions of what they did to them. New technology has …

Positional Elites In Politics, Economy And Culture In Slovenia During 1988-95, Anton Kramberger
Positional Elites In Politics, Economy And Culture In Slovenia During 1988-95, Anton Kramberger
Anton Kramberger
The paper numerically describes the nature and environment of a peaceful regime and elite change in Slovenia during 1988 - 1995. In 1991 the country (formerly a far west region of the Tito's Yugoslavia) became a new independent state and was soon internationally recognized. The paper starts with brief theoretical expectations. Then it outlines a special initial effort in this kind of research, i.e., the elite sample design: How the elites segments as well as their elite positions in Slovenia were defined in advance for the purposes of a special survey performed among national elite members during 1994/95. Next, it …

La Violencia Y Sus Actores. Una Historia Local., Alexander Montoya Prada
Alexander Montoya Prada

The Emergence Of Taiwanese Nationalism: A Preliminary Work On An Approach To Interactive Episodic Discourse, Weider Shu
The Emergence Of Taiwanese Nationalism: A Preliminary Work On An Approach To Interactive Episodic Discourse, Weider Shu
Weider Shu
Examines the emergence of separatist nationalism in Taiwan, suggesting an alternative explanatory model. Taiwan's modern history is traced, focusing on the dominant ideologies imposed by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), counterideologies advocated by opposition forces, the dynamic relationships between state & opposition forces, rise of democracy, & appearance of a more moderate version of nationalism. The advantages & shortcoming of separatist nationalism theories of primordialism, internal colonialism, & constructionism are described, & a more consistent framework focusing on interactive episodic discourse is introduced. This approach sees the "making of nation" as a "crafting identity" process shaped by socioeconomic & political …

Domestic Partnership And Same-Sex Relationships: A Marketplace Innovation And A Less Than Perfect Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer
Domestic Partnership And Same-Sex Relationships: A Marketplace Innovation And A Less Than Perfect Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
The struggle for the recognition and protection of same-sex relationships is at the forefront of the contemporary gay and lesbian civil rights agenda. Whereas the push for same-sex marriage and parenting rights has met with mixed results in the courts and the legislatures, an impressive array of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, colleges, nonprofit corporations, and municipalities, now extend benefits to the same-sex partners of their employees. This level of success raises a provocative question regarding the potential role of institutional employers in the larger on the agenda for progressive social change. Domestic partnership benefits are a creature of the …
Black's Theory On The Behavior Of Law Revisited Iii: Law As More Or Less Governmental Social Control, Kam C. Wong
Black's Theory On The Behavior Of Law Revisited Iii: Law As More Or Less Governmental Social Control, Kam C. Wong
Kam C. Wong
In 1976 Donald Black introduced a scientific social theory on The Behavior of Law. Black defines law as “governmental social control.” In 1997, Wong restated Black’s concept of law as “more or less governmental social conrol.” Law as more or less governmental social control exists when the government endorses private social control activities or otherwise delegates social control powers to private parties. This research used Wong’s restatement of Black’s concept of law to investigate the law enforcement role and functions of the Strike Committee during the Canton-Hong Kong strike (1925-1926). It found that during the Canton-Hong Kong strike the KMT …

Multiparameter flow cytometry studies were performed on cells from the primary tumors of 94 patients with breast cancer. Correlated cellular measurements of cell DNA content, Her-2/neu, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and p21ras levels were performed on each of 5,000 to 100,000 cells from each tumor. When criteria for positivity were matched with those in common use for immunohistochemical studies, 28 of 94 (30\%) breast cancers were classified as positive for Her-2/neu overexpression. When similar criteria were applied to the EGFR measurements, 23 of 94 (24\%) cases were classified as positive for EGFR overexpression. Similarly, 23 of 94 (24\%) cases …

Turkiye'de Icgoc Ve Icgocun Isci Hareketine Etkisi, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci, I. Aydingun
Ibrahim Sirkeci
Changing Dynamics Of The Migratory Regime Between Turkey And Arab Countries, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci
Changing Dynamics Of The Migratory Regime Between Turkey And Arab Countries, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci
Ibrahim Sirkeci
People from Turkey have been major participants in international migration for more than three decades. Hundreds of thousands have gone abroad since the early 1960s, particularly to Western Europe, but also, to a much lesser extent, to Australia, and later, in larger numbers than to Australia, to Arab countries, and more recently to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This essay discusses trends and patterns in migration from Turkey to Arab countries since the late 1960s. It relates this migratory movement to the wider context of Turkish emigration. By examining the ongoing migration ties between Turkey and the receiving Arab …
“Migrations Of Ethnic Unmixing In The New Europe, Rogers Brubaker
“Migrations Of Ethnic Unmixing In The New Europe, Rogers Brubaker
Rogers Brubaker
To the extent that ethnicity or nationality has been relevant to the study of migrations to, from or within Europe in the last century and a half, the focus has been on migration as a 'heterogenizing' process, one important consequence of which has been to introduce or increase ethnic or national heterogeneity in the receiving countries. This article addresses a different, and neglected, link between migration and ethnicity or nationality in Europe. It explores migrations of "ethnic unmixing" or "ethnic affinity."

Themes That Thread Through Society: Racism And Athletic Manifestation In The African-American Community, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
The purpose of this article is to examine and critically analyze the impact of sport in the African-American community. This critique of the social and behavioral outcomes of sport in the African-American community will include philosophical, historical, and sociological inquiry most affecting the plight of the African-American male in academics and athletics. Data on the perceptions of contemporary African-American men participating in sport in higher education will also add more support to the conclusion that race and sport are socially constructed in society.

Ethnic And Nationalist Violence, Rogers Brubaker, David Laitin
Ethnic And Nationalist Violence, Rogers Brubaker, David Laitin
Rogers Brubaker
Work on ethnic and nationalist violence has emerged from two largely nonintersecting literatures: studies of ethnic conflict and studies of political violence. Only recently have the former begun to attend to the dynamics of violence and the latter to the dynamics of ethnicization. Since the emergent literature on ethnic violence is not structured by clearly defined theoretical oppositions, we organize our review by broad similarities of methodological approach: (a) Inductive work at various levels of aggregation seeks to identify the patterns, mechanisms, and recurrent processes implicated in ethnic violence. (b) Theory-driven work employs models of rational action drawn from international …

The Relationship Between Drug Use And Labor Supply For Young Men, Michael T. French, Gary A. Zarkin, Thomas A. Mroz, Jeremy W. Bray
Michael T. French
This paper examines the relationship between young men's hours worked and their use of marijuana, alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, and other drugs using cross-section data from the 1991 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), a nationally representative survey of the U.S. noninstitutionalized population age 12 and over. Our results indicate that substance use has little effect on the number of hours worked by young men in the past month, with the exception that young men who smoked 1 to 3 marijuana joints in the last month worked 42 more hours than nonusers. To assess the robustness of our 1991 results, …
