For most single parents who are expected to work full-time under current welfare policies and who have children needing child care, use of a car is the most practical means of transportation. The difficulties of getting to the child care provider, then to work, back to the child care provider and home contribute to job retention problems, particularly for single parents lacking a family car or a valid driver's license. This study examined the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) driver's license records for 719,320 Milwaukee County residents, analyzed 331,304 recent (1992-1996) suspensions and 125,717 revocations by type and number of …

One of the critical concerns facing parents seeking employment is provision of adequate care for their children while they are at work. Employment and Training Institute surveys of central city Milwaukee female job seekers identified lack of child care as a primary barrier to employment, and a recent assessment of AFDC mothers with very young children found that most needed help finding and financing child care. The Employment and Training Institute prepared this manual on how to conduct job vacancy surveys was prepared under contract with the Employment and Training Administration of the United States Department of Labor (#X-6752-8-00-80-60) so that state and local policy makers can benefit from the experience of the Milwaukee project and previous job openings surveys conducted in the United States and other countries. Job vacancy survey design, sampling, methodology, weighting, survey administration, data verification and data analyses issues are described in detail in this manual. Employment Patterns Of Larger Milwaukee Area Companies: Occupational Shifts, Job Expansion And Progress Toward Diversity, Lois M. Quinn

This report examines the employment patterns of private companies in the Milwaukee metropolitan area with 100 or more employees, utilizing computerized summaries of EEO-l annual reports filed with the U.S. Equal Opportunities Employment Commission. Each year these companies are required to report on their total labor force, minorities and women employed by nine occupational groupings. The data are provided to identify occupational shifts, progress toward a diversified labor force and challenges facing Milwaukee area employers and workers. The greatest job growth in larger Milwaukee area companies was reported for college-trained professional jobs. Larger companies reported a net increase of 6.251 …

This paper, one of a series of studies exploring employment myths and realities surrounding welfare reform initiatives, examines job availability and the experience of single mothers in Milwaukee County who have received Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). This paper analyzes the short-term effects of the monetary crisis and natural disasters in Indonesia on women's health and nutritional status, and activities to monitor and address these problems. The monetary crisis which was announced in January 1998 hit the highest monthly inflation rate of 13 percent in February. Natural disasters that have plagued Indonesia since early 1997, including droughts and forest fires, have been projected to cause famines and an increased likelihood of infant and adult mortality.
