This research project aims to identify and acknowledge the various non-pharmacological interventions and treatments for both children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. This review will highlight the non-pharmacological interventions that are discussed in current research, the significance and potential impact it has on the field of social work, and the way in which this research proposal will be conducted.

ADHD is a commonly known neurodevelopmental disorder that is often seen within children and adolescents. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects up to nine percent of children in the United States (DuPaul et. al, 2014; Ralph et. al, 2001; Spencer, 2007; Wedge, 2016). Furthermore, 25% of children will also be exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Exposure to ACEs is strongly correlated with negative short-term and long-term effects on a child’s cognitive, physical and mental health, and social-emotional development. Practitioner Use Of Neurofeedback In The Treatment Of Children’S Mental Health, Andrea Markworth

This study explores the use of neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, by practitioners treating mental health conditions in children. A semi-structured interview with eight practitioners from various disciplines serves as the data source. Content analysis was utilized and data was coded and categorized. Five themes emerged from the analysis of the interview—Neurofeedback Education, How Neurofeedback Works, Neurofeedback Treatment Structure, Conditions Treated, and Feedback. These findings are in alignment with the existing literature. Specific conditions identified are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and autism spectrum disorder. This study explores how young adults with ADHD construct self-concept, and how their self-concept impacts psychosocial functioning. Research shows that those with ADHD are more likely to experience significant setbacks across the lifespan due to impairments that negatively impact functioning in multiple life domains. Several studies note high comorbidity between ADHD and internalizing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Although existing research suggests neurobiological correlations, there has been little investigation into other causal relationships.
