A Cross-Sectional Study On Korean American Mental Health Challenges And Help-Seeking Behavior, Kelly Eunjung Baek
A Cross-Sectional Study On Korean American Mental Health Challenges And Help-Seeking Behavior, Kelly Eunjung Baek
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Mental distress in the Korean American community remains chronically high yet professional service utilization is amongst the lowest of any ethnic group in the United States. With high rates of co-morbidity in this community, it is critical to utilize a multilevel approach to understand the scope of distress of distress by simultaneously analyzing the occurrences of anxiety, depression, and hwa-byung (a Korean cultural illness), in addition to studying factors that impact help-seeking behavior. To contextualize the unique circumstances and factors that impact mental health challenges and resource utilization in the community, Critical Race Theory and Anderson’s Healthcare Utilization Model was …
The Role Of Glucocorticoid Signaling In Prostate Cancer Health Disparities, Leanne W. Burnham
The Role Of Glucocorticoid Signaling In Prostate Cancer Health Disparities, Leanne W. Burnham
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
African-American men are more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer (PCa) and die from the disease than other ethnic groups. Glucocorticoid signaling is a contributing biological factor to worse PCa prognosis, and is emerging as a key driver of PCa progression in the absence of androgens. The mechanism involves glucocorticoids binding to glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and bypassing the androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway to activate AR-target genes that promote tumor aggressiveness and therapy-resistance. This is problematic as African-American men have hypersensitive GR signaling and chronically-elevated levels of glucocorticoids linked to cumulative stressful life events. To explore the role of glucocorticoid …
An Examination Of Foster Youth Socialization To Dating And Sexual Behaviors, Rhoda L. Smith
An Examination Of Foster Youth Socialization To Dating And Sexual Behaviors, Rhoda L. Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Foster youth reportedly face unusual and negative life circumstances and outcomes due to being placed in out-of-home care. Foster care provides a resource for substitute caregiving which can range from archaically institutional to warm and familial. Foster care is a transient system which alters what is normative for youth relative to what mainstream youth experience, especially in adolescence. Being out of control of their lives and futures serves to create vulnerability for foster youth in the area of sexual and reproductive health. Lack of clarity within the child welfare agency regarding responsibility for imparting necessary, relevant information to foster youth …

Insights In Depression Screening At A Latino-Serving, Integrated Fqhc Clinic, Jacquelyn Stephenson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Depression manifests differently in Latinos when compared to other racial-ethnic groups, but little is known regarding linguistic differences among Latinos. This mixed methods study explored the depression screening processes among patients and medical providers at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) through an ethnic-linguistic lens. Binary logistic regressions were performed to determine the effects of ethnicity and language on PHQ-2 screening rates for 10,285 adult patients seen during a primary care medical visit from 2014 to 2015; of these 4,745 (46%) patients were screened for depression. Spanish-speakers were screened for depression more often than non-Latinos and Latinos who were English-speakers. …
Emotional Intelligence: How It Impacts Depression Levels And Perception Of Role Fulfillment Among Caregiver Foster Parents, Elysse Farnell
Emotional Intelligence: How It Impacts Depression Levels And Perception Of Role Fulfillment Among Caregiver Foster Parents, Elysse Farnell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this investigator-initiated study is to identify levels of emotional intelligence (El), depression, and role fulfillment among foster parents. It is believed that if a link between EI and the other variables is identified, programs can be developed to help build EI in foster parents, and thus aid them in becoming more effective caregivers. A convenience sample of foster parents participated in this mixed methods study. There were 30 participants total recruited through a collaborative effort with a local Foster
Family Agency (FF A). Participants were at least 25 years of age and a certified foster parent. Participants …

Working With Native American Youth To Promote Healthy Dating Relationships, Araceli Iniguez-Reyes
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Adolescent dating violence is a significant problem in the US in general. Research regarding programs that promote healthy dating relationships for Native American adolescents is however limited. This study explored cultural factors to consider in delivering a healthy relationship program with Native American youth, used this data to adapt an evidence-based program, and then pilot tested the culturally adapted program to see if it was effective in promoting healthy dating relationships attitudes and skills in this population. We used a mixed methods design in two phases. In the qualitative phase we conducted nine key informant interviews and two focus groups …
Spirituality's Role In The Interaction Between Child Welfare And Black Families, Laurel Brown
Spirituality's Role In The Interaction Between Child Welfare And Black Families, Laurel Brown
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This qualitative study explored how a sample of key stakeholders, including African American parents and child welfare staff in the Moreno Valley area of Riverside County, California, jointly construct the role that spirituality/religion plays in engaging, assessing and intervening with African American families. Utilizing a constructivist paradigm, the goals were to, through the development of "hermeneutic dialectic" circles, (1) arrive at shared constructions about the role of spirituality/religion in child welfare work with African American families, and (2) to identify a participatory group of stakeholders to design and implement action utilizing the results. Nationally, African American children are disproportionately overrepresented …
Secondary Traumatic Stress: Social Workers In A Veterans Affairs Healthcare Setting, Nikola R. Alenkin
Secondary Traumatic Stress: Social Workers In A Veterans Affairs Healthcare Setting, Nikola R. Alenkin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine secondary traumatic stress (STS) and the coping of social workers in inpatient and outpatient settings in a Veterans Affairs healthcare system. A convenience sample of 126 master's level and above social workers completed a survey measuring Secondary Traumatic Stress. Rates of reported secondary traumatic stress symptoms and utilization of coping strategies by social work staff were investigated. Setting was not a significant factor in reported secondary traumatic stress scores. Although female social workers in inpatient settings reported higher rates of stress symptomatology than other social workers across settings, the rates were not …
The Relationship Between Tamoxifen And Depressive Symptoms In Women With Breast Cancer, Terry Marie Lynn
The Relationship Between Tamoxifen And Depressive Symptoms In Women With Breast Cancer, Terry Marie Lynn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine whether women with breast cancer and the presence of the drug tamoxifen, are more severely depressed than women with breast cancer and the absence of tamoxifen. Average Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores did not differ between the two sub-groups; however, two significant group differences were found. First, 10 women in the tamoxifen group had scores of zero (versus 4 in the absence of prescribed tamoxifen group). Research has shown that scores of zero do not always reflect an absence of depression. Second, the most severely depressed women (BDI scores in the 25 …
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Parents Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, Carol Farr
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Parents Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, Carol Farr
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) produces cognitive, behavioral, and affective deficits with resulting problems such as improper social behavior, increased aggression, emotional, personality and characterological changes. The impact upon the survivor, the sibling, as well as the parental subsystem has been well documented in the literature. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been diagnosed in several different types of trauma survivors, although rarely have individual psychological symptoms been studied in parents.
This research examined the possible vulnerability factors that are associated with TBI and their potential influence upon PTSD symptomology. Questionnaires were mailed to 266 parents of TBI patients with a response …
Attachment And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity In Physically And Sexually Abused Adolescents, Lauren Woods
Attachment And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity In Physically And Sexually Abused Adolescents, Lauren Woods
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The relationship between symptoms associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and attachment was assessed. All students (n=109) at a residential school were screened for a history of physical or sexual abuse. Thirty-seven subjects who reported such a history, ranging in age from 11 to 19, were assessed using the Children’s Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction Index (CPTSD-RI), Bell Object Relations and Reality Testing Inventory (BORRTI), Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Results indicate that attachment difficulties were common in this sample and that current diagnostic criteria for PTSD did not …

Examination Of The Predictive Validity Of Risk Assessment Screening, Patricia Mary Morressy
Examination Of The Predictive Validity Of Risk Assessment Screening, Patricia Mary Morressy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Child Protective Services ( CPS) have been under growing pressure to implement risk assessment systems over the past ten years (Dueck, H. J., English, D.J., Depanfilis, and Moote, G.T. (1993). This emphasis has come largely from the increasing number of reported allegations of child abuse and neglect (Doueck, et. al.) However, increasingly individuals involved in custody battles use the CPS reporting system to retaliate against one another. Because these reported cases require the action of CPS, the increase in allegations has overburdened the system. As a result, resources have diminished and challenges to screeners to make accurate risk assessments have …
