Current studies provide evidence supporting the effectiveness of self-care activities on reducing the symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue. The education social workers receive on self-care during their graduate and undergraduate programs was analyzed in this mixed-method study. Researcher analyzed data from a quantitative survey of professional social workers that have completed their graduate or undergraduate degree in Social Work. The results of this study determine that no correlation exists between collegiate self-care education and the frequency of engagement in self-care activity; however, the qualitative data found that respondents place a high importance on self-care education and the social work …

This study was completed as a systematic review looking into effective self-care for those working with trauma and at risk populations. This study looked into how compassion fatigue can be combated by compassion satisfaction. By workers actively and effectively practicing self-care they are able to increase their own compassion satisfaction, which allows them to fight off both compassion fatigue and burnout. This study was able to identify exercise, spirituality, mindfulness, and personal support all as popular and effective self-care strategies commonly used by mental workers.

Self-care is an important aspect in social work practice, and mindfulness meditation can be used to reduce stress, provide a sense of calmness and increase awareness. Since the benefits of using mindfulness meditation as a form of self-care for social workers has been minimally studied, this research focused on whether mindfulness meditation could have a positive impact on self-care for social workers. This study used mixed methods of data collection and a single subject design methodology using the researchers as the subjects.
