Substance use is currently a pervasive problem among a large proportion of populations served by the social work profession. Several studies have indicated that social workers routinely provide services to clients with direct and indirect substance use needs, making knowledge of substance use interventions and public policies a necessity for most social workers to operate effectively in the field. Social work educational programs have been rapidly expanded in mainland China since 2000, and field practicum is considered as one of the most problematic areas. This qualitative study explores baccalaureate social work students’ perceptions of the most useful learning event in the field practicum. Critical Incident Technique-based interview was conducted with 27 students from one undergraduate program in Beijing. Interview transcripts were analyzed using Nvivo software, guided by a constant comparative method in the ground theory tradition. The dissertation study explores the complex concepts of macro social work student competence and describes the development and pilot of a field evaluation that employs the use of qualitative student descriptors in the evaluation of macro social work students. A qualitative student descriptor is a short statement that describes a behavior of a social work student. When used for field evaluation purposes, field instructors are given a list of qualitative student descriptors that cover a range of competency levels.
