Underpinning social work education and social work practice are approaches that embrace strengths and resilience perspectives. Social work education aimed at students preparing for work in child welfare is no exception. This banded dissertation consists of three products that address linkages between strengths and resilience perspectives to social work education and practice with families involved in child welfare. The first paper is a conceptual article that discusses engaged pedagogy, transformative learning and reflective teaching pedagogies specific to child welfare-focused social work education. In this systematic literature review, the researcher synthesized literature regarding the mental health impacts of non-kinship versus kinship placements on children who are involved with the child welfare system. Using SocINDEX with Full Text, PsychINFO, Social Work Abstracts, Child Development and Adolescent Studies and JSTOR, nine studies met the criteria for the review and were then analyzed. Themes that were identified included: Placement type, PTSD, depression and gender. The studies included in this review identified the mental health impacts on children depending on their placement type. This study gives evidence for the need of more research around this topic.

The practice of removing American Indian Children from their families, relatives, and communities and placing them in foster care with or adoption by White families is an ongoing problem despite the enactment of the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). The purpose of this systematic study is to analyze previous research, examine effective interventions and explore what child welfare system changes and practices must occur to reduce disproportionality of American Indian Children in foster care. Family reunification is the preferred permanency option, and is the most common goal for families that have been separated. The purpose of this study was to explore various child protection workers’ perspectives on family reunification. This project intended to gain an insider perspective using a qualitative research design. A semi- structured interview was used with six child protection worker’s that participated in this study. These interviews revealed four major themes from the data collected: family factors, worker influence/bias, one size doesn’t fit all, and the system prevents reunification. The purpose of this study is to provide the background and theoretical framework that contribute to staff retention and job satisfaction in child protection. This project intends to understand the factors and relationships associated in maintaining successful staff in child welfare. An anonymous mixed methods study was utilized and formatted with both quantitative and qualitative questions.
