Mingle Mingle: Practicing Pronouns, Meagan Mullen
Social Justice Week
"Hi! My name is ___ and my pronouns are ___, nice to meet you." Have you heard someone at Pace introduce themselves this way? Did you not understand or know how to respond? That’s okay! It’s helpful to share pronouns to people you haven’t met so they know how to refer to you when you aren’t around, and this is a practice we’ve grown accustomed to at Pace University. This isn’t natural for everyone, so this event is an opportunity to practice sharing your pronouns and using other folks' pronouns in conversation. We will be speed meeting some other students …

Black Excellence Initiative: Fostering Belonging, Kiku Huckle
Social Justice Week
The Black Excellence Initiative works to counter the endemic effects of racism, and to create spaces to cultivate well-being for Black students and communities by inviting Black speakers to campus who exemplify excellence in a variety of contexts. BJ Bell, Director of the Performance Attribution teams for the US and APAC regions at BlackRock, will discuss his work with local organizations and company initiatives that focus on financial inclusion and creating opportunities for underrepresented students of color. BJ also has worked extensively to encourage discussions around topics of race and inequality, and served on the expert review panel for Racial …
Moving From Dialogue To Deliberation About Campus Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Chad Raphael
Moving From Dialogue To Deliberation About Campus Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Chad Raphael
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Campus communities continue to become increasingly diverse as the U.S. grows more sensitized to, yet polarized over, issues of social justice. In response, many institutions of higher learning are placing greater emphasis on students’ experiential learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in co-curricular experiences such as new student orientation and in coursework. Experiential educators can help students forge links between learning about DEI in the co-curriculum and curriculum, and to move from intergroup dialogue to deliberation, which allows student learning to inform institutional learning. This article describes the design, outcomes, and implications of a course on dialogue and deliberation …

The Catholic Peacebuilding Network: Lessons Learned, Gerard F. Powers
The Catholic Peacebuilding Network: Lessons Learned, Gerard F. Powers
The Journal of Social Encounters
As one of the world’s largest transnational institutions, the Catholic Church is deeply engaged in a wide variety of peacebuilding activities at all levels through many different types of institutions and organizations. This essay examines one of these entities, the Catholic Peacebuilding Network (CPN), a network of university institutes, episcopal conferences, development agencies, and independent peace organizations. It considers CPN’s mission, activities, contributions to the Catholic community’s wider work for peace, and the challenges it faces as it seeks to accompany the Catholic community in areas of conflict. By looking at this one actor, this essay offers insights into Catholic …
Git (Gender-Informed Trauma) In Black N Blue Boys / Broken Men: How Concepts Of Gender Restrict The Black Male Actor’S Creative Process And The Methods He Can Use For Creative Freedom., Tyler Tate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how the black male actor’s creative process can be affected by historical and cultural constructions of masculinity connected to race, sexuality, and physical movement. My research on black men’s experience with gender identity finds that social and cultural forces lead black men to reproduce behaviors that mirror a prescribed masculine ideal through physical movement. This prescribed masculine behavior is typically coded in terms of stiffness or lack of expression. This study explores how self-imposed restrictions reiterated by social standards of masculine behavior limit the creative freedom in the black male actor’s creative process. Specifically, black male actors’ …

Implementing Excellence In Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The Library Workforce: Tips To Overcome Challenges, Kanu A. Nagra, Bernadette M. López-Fitzsimmons
Implementing Excellence In Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The Library Workforce: Tips To Overcome Challenges, Kanu A. Nagra, Bernadette M. López-Fitzsimmons
Publications and Research
Diversifying the library workforce is challenging, with the graduation data of library and information science degrees not representing equity in demographics for diverse populations. Is this the reason for the lack of diversity among library staff or are recruitment practices not based on measurable performance standards? Both questions call upon the library and information science (LIS) profession to address diverse staffing issues to remedy these challenges.
Coalition And Creativity On The Bridges And Fringes With Immigrant Student-Contributors In Nonprofit Adult Education, Katherine E. Entigar
Coalition And Creativity On The Bridges And Fringes With Immigrant Student-Contributors In Nonprofit Adult Education, Katherine E. Entigar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The nonprofit education of adult immigrants is an under-researched aspect of U.S. education. Adult immigrants, often perceived as passive and quiescent, bring voices and contributions to learning in powerful yet unheard ways. This research agenda invokes a new critical lens in education scholarship to uplift and center these contributions as a coalitional, dialogical project. Drawing upon critical sociocultural, women of color feminist, and poststructual theories, critical intersectional epistemology, and Bakhtinian dialogical thinking, this research project pursues inductive, recursive meaning making as an innovative exploration. A multiphase, sequential study including surveys and two focus groups foregrounds the complex, fluid ways adult …
Examining The Experience Of White Privilege For Human Service Providers Using The Expressive Therapies, Melanie Carbonneau
Examining The Experience Of White Privilege For Human Service Providers Using The Expressive Therapies, Melanie Carbonneau
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
There is significant need for white human services providers to have awareness of their racial identities, privilege, racism, biases and understanding impacts to client care. Yet in the United States, people who are white often demonstrate little awareness of their racial identities due to living in a white supremacist society. When confronted with issues of race, it is common for people who are white to demonstrate difficulties with topics including denial, discomfort, and defensiveness. This research examines the experience of using the expressive arts therapies to explore personal racial identity, personal biases, and issues of racism in the workplace for …

The Library As A Safe(R) Space: Student Thoughts About The Library’S Role On Campus, Jessica Crossfield Mcintosh, Kristin Cole, Megan Powell
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
As the demographics of college students continue to evolve, libraries must examine areas of need between their staff and the campus community. These changes and recent other recent campus events required Otterbein’s Courtright Memorial Library to question its role in providing safe(r) spaces to students of minority communities and to examine its role as a social justice advocate for inclusivity on campus. Our student body is historically white, yet our 2019 freshman class was the most diverse in its history with 23% students of color. The enrollment of students with diverse backgrounds continues to climb with our welcoming of first-generation …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study seeks to understand the effects and levels of impact that a university student’s intercultural communication competence, social media usage, and self-esteem have on the students’ attitudes towards diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts implemented by institutions of higher education. By studying these three independent variables, this research seeks to improve the understanding of the university students’ attitudes on DEI efforts for leaders and change agents in higher education, providing an inspiration for leaders, administrators, and change agents of higher education to continue collaborating to innovate methods and avenues towards creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus climate, as …

Animal-Human Relationships In Child Protective Services: Getting A Baseline, Christina Risley-Curtiss, Lisa Anne Zilney, Rebecca Hornung
Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Inclusion of certain aspects of animal-human relationships (AHR), such as animal abuse and animal-assisted interventions, can enhance child welfare practice and there are resources available to promote such inclusion. However, there is little knowledge of whether this is being accomplished. This study sought to fill this gap by conducting a national survey of state public child welfare agencies to examine AHR in child protective services practice, their assessment tools, and crossreporting policies.
There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans
There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans
Communication Faculty Publications
In the organizational competition for talent, successful retention of newly recruited workers is at least as important as the initial hire. Still, many organizations fail to establish a sense of inclusion for new people in much the same way they often fail to create a sense of inclusion for people of color, women, people with foreign accents, or anyone with obvious differences from the “traditional group.” In most organizations, even those that have embarked on “diversity initiatives,” newly hired people often do not feel welcomed. Consequently, turnover rates in the first two years of employment are seven times greater than …
