Whole-Genome Analysis Of Multienvironment Or Multitrait Qtl In Magic, Arunas P. Verbyla, Colin R. Cavanagh, Klara L. Verbyla

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Multiparent Advanced Generation Inter-Cross (MAGIC) populations are now being utilized to more accurately identify the underlying genetic basis of quantitative traits through quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses and subsequent gene discovery. The expanded genetic diversity present in such populations and the amplified number of recombination events mean that QTL can be identified at a higher resolution. Most QTL analyses are conducted separately for each trait within a single environment. Separate analysis does not take advantage of the underlying correlation structure found in multienvironment or multitrait data. By using this information in a joint analysis-be it multienvironment or multitrait - it …

Finite Element Method Analysis Of Micro Cross Wedge Rolling Of Metals, Zhengyi Jiang, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Kezhi Linghu, Xianming Zhao, Xiaoming Zhang, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A newly developed manufacturing technology - micro cross wedge rolling technology is an appropriate method to produce micro axisymmetric components such as micro stepped shafts. The development of this classic cold forming process is limited by a lack of sufficient understanding of geometric and material effects due to the size reduction of the components. In this study, a numerical model is proposed to simulate micro cross wedge rolling where the grain size effect is taken into account. Pure copper is chosen as the raw material. A finite element simulation is implemented where the diameter of the cylindrical workpiece is 0.8 …

Combinatorial Approach Using Wavelet Analysis And Artificial Neural Network For Short-Term Load Forecasting, Dao Hoang Vu, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Short term load forecasting is critically important in modern electricity networks since it helps provide supportive information for reliable power system operation in competitive electricity market environment. In this paper, the wavelet analysis based neural network model is employed to forecast the electricity demand in short-term period. The wavelet analysis helps to decompose the electricity demand data into different frequency bands. The Fourier transform is then employed to reveal the significant lags of these decomposed components. These lags are then used as inputs of neural network model to forecast the future values of each decomposed component. Finally, the forecasted components …

Disclosure-Protected Inference With Linked Microdata Using A Remote Analysis Server, James Chipperfield Jan 2014

Disclosure-Protected Inference With Linked Microdata Using A Remote Analysis Server, James Chipperfield

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Large amounts of microdata are collected by data custodians in the form of censuses and administrative records. Often, data custodians will collect different information on the same individual. Many important questions can be answered by linking microdata collected by different data custodians. For this reason, there is very strong demand from analysts, within government, business, and universities, for linked microdata. However, many data custodians are legally obliged to ensure the risk of disclosing information about a person or organisation is acceptably low. Different authors have considered the problem of how to facilitate reliable statistical inference from analysis of linked microdata …

Analysis Of Internal Crack Healing Mechanism Under Rolling Deformation, Haitao Gao, Zhengrong Ai, Hailiang Yu, Hongyan Wu, Xianghua Liu Jan 2014

Analysis Of Internal Crack Healing Mechanism Under Rolling Deformation, Haitao Gao, Zhengrong Ai, Hailiang Yu, Hongyan Wu, Xianghua Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new experimental method, called the 'hole filling method', is proposed to simulate the healing of internal cracks in rolled workpieces. Based on the experimental results, the evolution in the microstructure, in terms of diffusion, nucleation and recrystallisation were used to analyze the crack healing mechanism. We also validated the phenomenon of segmented healing. Internal crack healing involves plastic deformation, heat transfer and an increase in the free energy introduced by the cracks. It is proposed that internal cracks heal better under high plastic deformation followed by slow cooling after rolling. Crack healing is controlled by diffusion of atoms from …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Strip profile control during rolling is required to assure the dimensional quality of rolled thin strip is acceptable for customers. Throughout rolling, the strip profile is controlled by using the advanced shape control rolling mill, such as the combination of work roll crossing and shifting during asymmetrical rolling, the one of the valuable methods to control the strip profile quality in rolling process. In this paper, the influences of cold rolling parameters such as the crossing angle and axial shifting value of work rolls on the strip profile are analysed. The strip shape control is discussed under both symmetrical and …

Analysis Of Fishscaling Resistance Of Low Carbon Heavy Plate Steels, Aiwen Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Sihai Jiao, Chun Xu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The precipitates and hydrogen permeation behavior in three kinds of hot rolled low carbon heavy plate steels for enameling were analyzed; then, both sides of the steels were enameled. The experimental results show that a large amount of coarse Ti4C2S2 and fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the optimized Ti-bearing steel, quite a lot of fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the optimized carbon steel, but only a little bit fine Ti(C, N) particles exist in the carbon steel. The fishscaling resistance of the steels can be correlated to the effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient, and a model of correlation between …

Constitutive Analysis For Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Novel Bimetal Consisting Of Pearlitic Steel And Low Carbon Steel, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Huijun Li, Sihai Jiao, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingtao Han, Dengfu Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

To understand the high temperature flow behaviour of a novel pearlitic steel (PS) and low carbon steel (LCS) bimetal, hot compression tests in a wide range of temperature and strain rate were conducted on a Gleeble 3500 thermo mechanical simulator, and the constitutive model was developed based on the experimental data. The measured true stress-strain curves exhibited three types of variation patterns, which are (i) a plateau type, (ii) single peak type and (iii) multi peaks type. These patterns well displayed the effects of the deformation temperature, strain rate and plastic strain on the flow behaviour of the bimetal. By …

Computational Analysis Of Compressive Strain Hardening Exponents Of Bimetal With Pearlitic Steel And Low Carbon Steel, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Sihai Jiao, Jingtao Han

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The compressive strain hardening behaviour of a novel bimetal with pearlitic steel and low carbon steel was investigated by computational analysis based on the isothermal compression tests in a wide range of deformation temperature and strain rate. The Hollomon's equation was employed to calculate the strain hardening exponent (SHE) with the assistance of mathematical manipulation. The result shows that the logarithmic relationship between the flow stress and plastic strain of the bimetal is highly non-linear, which results in the variation of the SHE of the bimetal. This variation reflects the dynamic competition between the strain hardening and softening mechanism by …

Characterisation Of Coke Packed Beds After Liquid Slag Flow At 1 500°C By Image Analysis, Hazem Labib George, Raymond Longbottom, Sheng Chew, David Pinson, Brian Monaghan Jan 2014

Characterisation Of Coke Packed Beds After Liquid Slag Flow At 1 500°C By Image Analysis, Hazem Labib George, Raymond Longbottom, Sheng Chew, David Pinson, Brian Monaghan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The flow of slag in the lower zone of the ironmaking blast furnace was experimentally simulated by adding slag to a high temperature laboratory scale coke packed bed. The flow of slag through packed beds of coke with packing densities varying from 50% to 65% was examined at 1 500°C. Since the liquid flow through a packed bed depends on packing properties such as particle size, particle shape, pore size and pore neck size, it was necessary to characterise these properties of the beds. In this work, image analysis of successive sections of the tested beds was utilised to characterise …

Energy-Efficiency Analysis Of Per-Subcarrier Antenna Selection With Peak-Power Reduction In Mimo-Ofdm Wireless Systems, Ngoc Phuc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of per-subcarrier antenna subset selection in OFDM wireless systems offers higher system capacity and/or improved link reliability. However, the implementation of the conventional per-subcarrier selection schememay result in significant fluctuations of the average power and peak power across antennas, which affects the potential benefits of the system. In this paper, power efficiency of high-power amplifiers and energy efficiency in per-subcarrier antenna selection MIMO-OFDM systems are investigated. To deliver the maximum overall power efficiency, we propose a two-step strategy for data-subcarrier allocation. This strategy consists of an equal allocation of data subcarriers based on linear optimization and peak-power reduction via cross-antenna …

A Mathematical Analysis Of A Membrane Bioreactor Containing A Sludge Disintegration System, Mark Nelson, Thomas Yue Jan 2014

A Mathematical Analysis Of A Membrane Bioreactor Containing A Sludge Disintegration System, Mark Nelson, Thomas Yue

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The activated sludge process is widely used to treat domestic and industrial wastewater. A significant drawback of this process is the production of "sludge", the disposal of which can comprise a significant proportion of the total operating costs of a wastewater treatment plant. We analyze the steady-state operation of a membrane bioreactor system (MBR) incorporating a sludge disintegration unit (SDU) to reduce sludge production. We provide a qualitative understanding of the model by finding analytically the steady-state solutions of the model and determining its stability as a function of the residence time. In practice a target value of the mixed …

Numerical Analysis Of High-Strength Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Slender Beam-Columns Under Cyclic Loading, Vipulkumar Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2014

Numerical Analysis Of High-Strength Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Slender Beam-Columns Under Cyclic Loading, Vipulkumar Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The effects of cyclic local buckling on the behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) slender beam-columns under cyclic loading were approximately considered in existing analytical methods by modifying the stress– strain curve for the steel tube in compression. These methods, however, cannot simulate the progressive cyclic local buckling of the steel tubes. This paper presents a new efficient numerical model for predicting the cyclic performance of high strength rectangular CFST slender beam-columns accounting for the effects of progressive cyclic local buckling of steel tube walls under stress gradients. Uniaxial cyclic constitutive laws for the concrete core and steel tubes are …

Numerical Analysis Of Spiral Roller Of Chain-Die Former, Shenglan Zhu, Yong Sun, Shichao Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Chain-die Forming is a novel sheet metal forming technology developed recently. It effectively minimizes the redundant deformation during forming in order to reduce residual stresses to very small values even to zero in product, which is impossible to be achieved through conventional roll forming. Better quality of products therefore can be expected with the development of this new technology. This article is to use FEM to analyze the stresses developed in the spiral roller which is one of the key elements in a Chain-die former. In order to optimize the design of Chain-die former, the results of equivalent stress have …

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo Jan 2014

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

As distribution networks become increasingly variable and generation becomes increasingly decentralised, voltage standards are becoming more liable to violation. Accordingly, intelligent voltage management strategies are required to enable standards compliance without unduly increasing network maintenance or infrastructure costs. The relationship between network power and voltages, however, is complex, non-linear and interdependent, and thus is difficult to conceptualise and use for decision-making and control purposes. This paper introduces a software toolkit that simplifies the development of voltage management strategies by the application of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis reduces complex network relationships to simple linear equations, and thus enables easy and comprehensive …

3d Fem Analysis Of Strip Shape During Multi-Pass Rolling In A 6-High Cvc Cold Rolling Mill, Kezhi Linghu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Fei Li, Dongbin Wei, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Xianming Zhao Jan 2014

3d Fem Analysis Of Strip Shape During Multi-Pass Rolling In A 6-High Cvc Cold Rolling Mill, Kezhi Linghu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Fei Li, Dongbin Wei, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Xianming Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A 3D elastic–plastic finite element method (FEM) model of cold strip rolling for 6-high continuous variable crown (CVC) control rolling mill was developed. This model considers the boundary conditions such as accurate CVC curves, total rolling forces, total bending forces and roll shifting values. The rolling force distributions were obtained by the internal iteration processes instead of being treated as model boundary conditions. The calculated error has been significantly reduced by the developed model. Based on the rolling schedule data from a 1,850-mm CVC cold rolling mill, the absolute error between the simulated results and the actual values is obtained …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Axially Loaded Cicular Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Short Columns, Vipulkumar Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2014

Nonlinear Analysis Of Axially Loaded Cicular Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Short Columns, Vipulkumar Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The experiments indicate that stainless steels in tension deform plastically more than stainless steels in compression. Therefore, the strain hardening of stainless steels in compression is much faster than that of stainless steels in tension. The full-range two-stage constitutive model for stainless steels assumes that stainless steels follow the same stress-strain behavior in compression and tension, which may underestimate the compressive strength of stainless steel tubes. This paper presents a fiber element model incorporating the recently developed full-range three-stage stress-strain relationships based on experimentally observed behavior for stainless steels for the nonlinear analysis of circular concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) …

Analysis Of Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction Of Hvdc System Integrated Hydro Units With Small Generator-To-Turbine Inertia Ratios, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky Jan 2014

Analysis Of Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction Of Hvdc System Integrated Hydro Units With Small Generator-To-Turbine Inertia Ratios, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The constant current controllers at high voltage direct current (HVDC) rectifier stations and the outer loops which set the reference to the current controller have potential to introduce negative damping on the nearby generating units. It is therefore vital to investigate the torsional interaction behavior between turbine-generator (TG) units and the HVDC systems over a frequency range of interest. In this paper, subsynchronous torsional interaction (SSTI) phenomenon for hydroelectric TG units with small generator-to-turbine inertia (GTI) ratios interconnected to an HVDC system has been investigated. The sensitivity of different system parameters, such as generating capacity and loading, DC power flow, …

Ontological Meta-Analysis And Synthesis Of Hipaa, Arkalgud Ramaprasad, Thant Syn, Khin Than Win

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present ontological meta-analysis and synthesis of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) as a method for reviewing, mapping, and visualizing the research literature in the domain cumulatively, logically, systematically, and systemically. The method will highlight the domain's bright spots which are heavily emphasized, the light spots which are lightly emphasized, the blind spots which have been overlooked, and the blank spots which may never be emphasized. It will highlight the biases and asymmetries in the domain's research; the research can then be realigned to make it stronger and more effective. We present an ontology for HIPAA, map the …
