This monograph is the result of the second joint effort of the Manufacturing Institute of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the author for studying the use of fifteen different manufacturing technologies in the US. Timely support by the National Science Foundation enabled this second study to be expanded to a larger number of participants. A total of 1,121 members of NAM participated in this study. Hard technologies studied were: AGV, CAD, CAM, CIM, CNC, FMS, LAN, Robotics and automated inspection, and soft technologies studied were: TQM, JIT, SQC, MRP, MRP II, and manufacturing cells.

The "InfoHarness" information integration platform, tools, and services being developed at Bellcore are aimed at providing integrated and rapid access to huge amounts of heterogeneous information independent of the type, representation, and location of information. InfoHarness provides advanced search and browsing capabilities without imposing the burden of restructuring, reformatting or relocating information on information suppliers or creators. This is achieved through object-oriented encapsulation of information and the associated meta-information (e.g., type, location, access rights, owner, creation date, etc.). The meta-information extraction methods ensure rapid and largely automatic creation of information repositories. A gateway that supports access to InfoHarness repositories from …

To enforce global serializability in a multidatabase environment the multidatabase transaction manager must take into account the indirect (transitive) conflicts between multidatabase transactions caused by local transactions. Such conflicts are difficult to resolve because the behavior or even the existence of local transactions is not known to the multidatabase system. To overcome these difficulties, we propose to incorporate additional data manipulation operations in the subtransactions of each multidatabase transaction. We show that if these operations create direct conflicts between subtransactions at each participating local database system, indirect conflicts can be resolved even if the multidatabase system is not aware of …

Beads of copper are amongst the oldest and most widespread ornament forms known in North America. Native copper was an important material to prehistoric Americans, and certainly the most important metal. It was collected, transported and traded over wide areas from as early as seven thousand years before present, and its for ornaments persisted until it was gradually replaced by European metals over the many years of the contact period. An understanding of beads requires an understanding of the people involved with them. This paper examines three historical aspects of people engaged in beadmaking, especially the production of glass beads. The history of their social relations is considered in regards to the record of their physical movements, the manner in which they organize themselves and pass on their traditions, and their status within society. Information concerning each of these is arranged geographically and chronologically in an attempt to discern the patterns of the social history of beadmakers.

Beads From The African Burial Ground, New York City: A Preliminary Assessment, Cheryl J. Laroche

Excavation of the African Burial Ground in New York City yielded the skeletal remains of more than 400 individuals. This paper is a preliminary discussion of beads associated with seven of the burials. The in situ bead configurations of three of the interments are distinctive and appear to be indicative of cultural practices of Africans in 18th-century New York. The configurations include necklaces and possibly wristlets, as well as waistbeads. The latter represent the first recorded instance of such use by Africans or African descendants in North America. These objects provide insight into the religious or ritual behavior of the …

European Beads From Spanish-Colonial Lamanai And Tipu, Belize, Marvin T. Smith, Elizabeth Graham, David M. Pendergast

Excavation of the contact-period components of the Maya sites of Lamanai and Tipu, in northern and west-central Belize, respectively, have yielded moderate collections of European glass and other beads. The archaeological data are augmented by ethnohistorical documentation regarding the length of Maya/Spanish interaction. Contexts do not provide unequivocal stratigraphic evidence of sequential bead importation, but known dates of bead varieties assist in refining both site chronology and the understanding of bead use. As the first Central American collections to be analyzed, the two assemblages offer an initial glimpse of one aspect of European impact on native material and non-material culture.

Several laser-based sensors for use on blast furnaces have been developed and implemented, including a raceway sensor, burden level sensor (single point) and burden surface profiler. These sensors are based on the time-of-flight technique and give high levels of accuracy in all applications. The data obtained from the sensors during normal furnace operations are examined in light of the process models utilised by operators and for the interpretation of pulverised coal injection performance. Raceway sensory data obtained during a furnace blow-in are also discussed.

The formation of an AlN compound in ball milled Al powder in ammonia was studied. In this work a magneto‐ball milling device with controlled ball movement was used. The end milling product was an Al based nanostructure. This product can be transformed into an AlN‐Al nanocomposite upon heating below the melting point of Al. It was found that the level of unreacted Al is dependent on milling time. The maximum amount of AlN was 88.28 wt %. The structure of as‐milled and annealed samples was investigated using x‐ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis was performed on as‐milled …

New Solutions For The Propagation Of Long Water Waves Over Variable Depth, Yinglong Zhang, Song-Ping Zhu

Based on the linearized long-wave equation, two new analytical solutions are obtained respectively for the propagation of long surface gravity waves around a conical island and over a paraboloidal shoal. Having been intensively studied during the last two decades, these two problems have practical significance and are physically revealing for wave propagation over variable water depth. The newly derived analytical solutions are compared with several previously obtained numerical solutions and the accuracy of those numerical solutions is discussed. The analytical method has the potential to be used to find solutions for wave propagation over more natural bottom topographies.

A three-dimensional barotropic and baroclinic model is developed to simulate currents and temperature changes induced by tropical cyclones traversing the continental shelf and slope region of the Australian North West Shelf. The model is based on a layered, explicit, finite difference formulation using the nonlinear primitive equations with an embedded entrainment scheme; a mixed-surface-layer interface is defined, which is allowed to shift from one interface to another, depending on the strength of a storm. Fresh meat, poultry, and seafood purchased from Seattle area grocery stores were investigated for the presence of Shiga-like toxin-producing Escherichia coli by using DNA probes for Shiga-like toxin (SLT) genes I and II. Of the 294 food samples tested, 17% had colonies with sequence homology to SLT I and/or SLT II genes.

Challenging the "de minimis risk" concept, Dr. Fischhoff argues that risks ought not to be considered apart from a particular technology's benefits. He argues, too, that the acceptability of particular kinds of risks should not be determined without considering the views of all persons who may be exposed. Finally, building upon the "reasonable person" construct, he suggests ways those goals might be achieved.
