Comparative Evaluation Of Modern Dosimetry Techniques Near Low- And High-Density Heterogeneities, Eyad A. Alhakeem, Sami Alshaikh, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Sergei F. Zavgorodni

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The purpose of this study is to compare performance of several dosimetric methods in heterogeneous phantoms irradiated by 6 and 18 MV beams. Monte Carlo (MC) calculations were used, along with two versions of Acuros XB, anisotropic analytical algorithm (AAA), EBT2 film, and MOSkin dosimeters. Percent depth doses (PDD) were calculated and measured in three heterogeneous phantoms. The first two phantoms were a 30 x 30 x 30 cm3 solid-water slab that had an air-gap of 20x 2.5 x 2.35 cm3. The third phantom consisted of 30 x 30 x 5 cm3 solid water slabs, two 30 x 30 x …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Water is often used as the medium for characterizing the effects of radiation on living tissue. However, in this study, charged-particle track simulations are employed to quantify the induced physicochemical and potential biological implications when a primary ionising particle with energy 10 keV strikes a medium made up entirely of water or pyrimidine. Note that pyrimidine was chosen as the DNA/RNA bases cytosine, thymine, and uracil can be considered pyrimidine derivatives. This study aims to assess the influence of the choice of medium on the charged-particle transport, and identify how appropriate it is to use water as the default medium …

A Comparative Analysis Of Multichannel Data Acquisition Systems For Quality Assurance In External Beam Radiation Therapy, Iolanda Fuduli, Claudiu Porumb, Anthony Espinoza, Abdullah Aldosari, Martin Carolan, Michael Lf Lerch, Peter E. Metcalfe, Anatoly Rosenfeld, Marco Petasecca

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The paper presents a comparative study performed by the Centre of Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) on three multichannel Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) based on different analogue front-ends to suit a wide range of radiotherapy applications. The three front-ends are: a charge-to-frequency converter developed by INFN Torino, an electrometer and a charge-to-digital converter (both commercial devices from Texas Instruments). For the first two (named DAQ A and B), the CMRP has designed the read-out systems whilst the third one (DAQ C) comes with its own evaluation board. For the purpose of the characterization DAQ A and DAQ B have been equipped …

A Comparative Study For Wear Resistant Of Stellite 6 Coatings On Nickel Alloy Substrate Produced By Laser Cladding, Hvof And Plasma Spraying Techniques, Alain Kusmoko, Druce P. Dunne, Huijun Li Jan 2014

A Comparative Study For Wear Resistant Of Stellite 6 Coatings On Nickel Alloy Substrate Produced By Laser Cladding, Hvof And Plasma Spraying Techniques, Alain Kusmoko, Druce P. Dunne, Huijun Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Stellite 6 coatings were deposited using laser cladding, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying and plasma spraying techniques on a nickel alloy substrate. The surface roughness, chemical composition and microstructure of these coatings were characterised by a surface profilometer, optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microhardness of the coatings was measured and the wear behaviour of the coatings was examined under controlled test conditions in a pin-on-plate (reciprocating) tribometer. The results showed that fully dense and crack-free laser clad Stellite 6 coatings can be formed on a high nickel steel substrate. Average microhardness values of the …

Comparative Study Of Vehicle Tyre-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation With A Novel Cost-Effective Method, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li Jan 2014

Comparative Study Of Vehicle Tyre-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation With A Novel Cost-Effective Method, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper qualitatively and quantitatively reviews and compares three typical tyre-road friction coefficient estimation methods, which are the slip slope method, individual tyre force estimation method and extended Kalman filter method, and then presents a new cost-effective tyre-road friction coefficient estimation method. Based on the qualitative analysis and the numerical comparisons, it is found that all of the three typical methods can successfully estimate the tyre force and friction coefficient in most of the test conditions, but the estimation performance is compromised for some of the methods during different simulation scenarios. In addition, all of these three methods need global …

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola Jan 2013

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Wind power generation has indicated an exponential increase during last two decades and existing transmission network infrastructure is increasingly becoming inadequate to transmit remotely generated wind power to load centres in the network. The dynamic line rating (DLR) is one of the viable solutions to improve the transmission line ampacity during high wind penetration without investing on an additional transmission network. The main objective of this study is to identify the basic differences between two main line rating standards, since transmission network service providers (TNSPs) heavily depend on these two standards when developing their line rating models. Therefore, a parameter …

Design Optimization And Comparative Analysis Of Silicon-Nanowire-Based Couplers, Hongqiang Li, Xiaye Dong, Enbang Li, Zhihui Liu, Yaoting Bai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Three kinds of highly compact 2 x 2 couplers based on silicon nanowire are designed and optimized for the array waveguide grating (AWG) demodulation integration microsystem in this paper. These couplers are directional (X) coupler, cross gap coupler (CGC), and multimode interface (MMI) coupler. The couplers are simulated using the beam propagation method. The distance between the input/output waveguides is set to 10 μm considering the test of a single device in the following work. The total footprint of X coupler is 10 μmx 300 μm. The length of parallel film waveguide is 1 μm. After optimization, the minimum excess …

A Comparative Study Of Three Inverse Kinematic Methods Of Serial Industrial Robot Manipulators In The Screw Theory Framework, Emre Sariyildiz, Eray Cakiray, Hakan Temeltas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this paper, we compare three inverse kinematic formulation methods for the serial industrial robot manipulators. All formulation methods are based on screw theory. Screw theory is an effective way to establish a global description of rigid body and avoids singularities due to the use of the local coordinates. In these three formulation methods, the first one is based on quaternion algebra, the second one is based on dual-quaternions, and the last one that is called exponential mapping method is based on matrix algebra. Compared with the matrix algebra, quaternion algebra based solutions are more computationally efficient and they need …
