Effect Of Scattered Electrons On The 'Magic Plate' Transmission Array Detector Response, Z A. Alrowaili, Michael L. F Lerch, Marco Petasecca, Martin G. Carolan, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Transmission type detectors can provide a measure of the energy fluence and if they are real-time systems that do not significantly attenuate the radiation beam have a distinct advantage over the current method as Quality Assurance (QA) could in principle be done during the actual patient treatment. The use of diode arrays in QA holds much promise due to real-time operation and feedback when compared to other methods e.g. films which are not real-time. The goal of this work is to describe the characterization of the radiation response of a silicon diode array called the Magic Plate (MP) when operated …

Strain-Induced Ferrite Formation And Its Effect On Mechanical Properties Of A Dual Phase Steel Produced Using Laboratory Simulated Strip Casting, Zhiping Xiong, Ahmed A. Saleh, Andrii Kostryzhev, Elena V. Pereloma

Thermo-mechanical processing of a strip cast dual phase (DP) steel was carried out using a Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator. The effect of deformation temperatures in the range from 1050 to 700 °C on the microstructure evolution was investigated using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy along with electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). Strain-induced ferrite (SIF) formation was observed following austenite deformation (∼0.41 reduction) in the 800–700 °C temperature range, leading to a ferrite grain refinement down to 3.1 ± 2.3 μm. A novel segmentation procedure was applied to separate selected EBSD maps into polygonal ferrite, SIF and second phase regions (bainite/martensite). Following …

In Vitro Investigation Of The Dose-Rate Effect On The Biological Effectiveness Of Megavoltage X-Ray Radiation Doses, Sianne Oktaria, Michael L. F Lerch, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Moeava Tehei, Stephanie Corde Jan 2017

In Vitro Investigation Of The Dose-Rate Effect On The Biological Effectiveness Of Megavoltage X-Ray Radiation Doses, Sianne Oktaria, Michael L. F Lerch, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Moeava Tehei, Stephanie Corde

Radiation therapy is rapidly evolving toward the delivery of higher dose rates to improve cancer treatment. In vitro experiments were performed to investigate the response of 9L and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, exposed to 10 MV X-ray radiations. Up to 8 Gy was delivered at a dose-rate of 50 cGy/min compared to 5 Gy/min. The data obtained emphasizes the importance of taking into account not only the physical, but also the radiobiological parameters, when planning a particular cancer treatment.

Effect Of Groove Spacing On Bond Strength Of Near-Surface Mounted (Nsm) Bonded Joints With Multiple Frp Strips, Shi Shun Zhang, Tao Yu Jan 2017

Effect Of Groove Spacing On Bond Strength Of Near-Surface Mounted (Nsm) Bonded Joints With Multiple Frp Strips, Shi Shun Zhang, Tao Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In the strengthening of existing deficient structures using the near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP method, a group of parallel NSM FRP strips are usually needed to meet the capacity enhancement requirement. When the groove spacing (i.e., the net distance between grooves) is relatively small, the bond behaviour of each NSM FRP strip is detrimentally influenced by the adjacent grooves/FRP strips, and such detrimental effect should be taken into account for a safe design of the NSM FRP strengthening system. All the existing models, however, have been proposed for NSM bonded joints with a single FRP strip and thus cannot consider the …

The Effect Of Imputing Missing Clinical Attribute Values On Training Lung Cancer Survival Prediction Model Performance, Mohamed S. Barakat, Matthew Field, Aditya K. Ghose, David Stirling, Lois C. Holloway, Shalini K. Vinod, Andre Dekker, David Thwaites Jan 2017

The Effect Of Imputing Missing Clinical Attribute Values On Training Lung Cancer Survival Prediction Model Performance, Mohamed S. Barakat, Matthew Field, Aditya K. Ghose, David Stirling, Lois C. Holloway, Shalini K. Vinod, Andre Dekker, David Thwaites

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

According to the estimations of the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research in Cancer, lung cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer worldwide. The last few years have witnessed a rise in the attention given to the use of clinical decision support systems in medicine generally and in cancer in particular. These can predict patients' likelihood of survival based on analysis of and learning from previously treated patients. The datasets that are mined for developing clinical decision support functionality are often incomplete, which adversely impacts the quality of the models developed and the decision …
