Exploring Youths’ Decision To Participate In Stem Afterschool Programs, Brooke M. Stafford, Virginia L. J. Bolshakova Jan 2022

Exploring Youths’ Decision To Participate In Stem Afterschool Programs, Brooke M. Stafford, Virginia L. J. Bolshakova

Indiana STEM Education Conference

STEM afterschool programs offer a range of academic, social, and emotional outcomes to support positive youth development. In particular, STEM afterschool programs have been shown to increase student self-efficacy and interest in pursuing STEM careers (Chan et al., 2020; Dabney et al., 2012). Youth must first choose to attend the STEM afterschool programs to gain the many benefits offered. However, participation in such programs decreases as youth get older and encounter additional competing interests (i.e., home responsibilities, jobs, etc.). To get youth to attend, STEM afterschool programs must meet the needs of youth by leveraging resources, activities, and relationships.

What Are The Benefits Of Stem Integration In Mathematics Classrooms In Underserved Schools? A Literature Review, Steve Heinold Jan 2022

What Are The Benefits Of Stem Integration In Mathematics Classrooms In Underserved Schools? A Literature Review, Steve Heinold

Indiana STEM Education Conference

The importance of mathematics education and STEM education in K-12 education in the United States is peaking. High stakes testing and focus on 21st Century skills have many schools scrambling to increase test scores while better preparing their students for the “real world.” This literature review looks at the history of STEM education in the United States and the recent focus on STEM integration into core individual subject classrooms, especially mathematics. This review also analyzes the effectiveness of STEM integration to help students from underserved schools and communities. While there is some evidence that engaging and responsive after-school STEM programs …

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman May 2020

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …

Enhancing Your Intelligence Agency Information Resource Iq: Pt. 4: National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (Ngia), National Intelligence University (Niu), And National Reconnaissance Office (Nro), Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Webinar presentation on publicly accessible information resources produced by the U.S. National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGIA), National Intelligence University (NIU), and National Reconnaissance Office. Places significant emphasis on missions of these agencies, their historical accomplishments, coverage of their educational activity, and information on the technologies they have used and are currently using to fulfill their institutional objectives.

Fracture Toughness Of Cast And Extruded Al6061/15%Al2o3p Metal Matrix Composites, Alan K. Hellier, A. G. Crosky, H. A. Hassan, J. J. Lewandowski Jan 2018

Fracture Toughness Of Cast And Extruded Al6061/15%Al2o3p Metal Matrix Composites, Alan K. Hellier, A. G. Crosky, H. A. Hassan, J. J. Lewandowski

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) are of interest owing to the low cost of their raw materials and their ease of fabrication, making them suitable for applications requiring relatively high-volume production. The improved properties of PRMMCs result from the addition of hard ceramic particles (such as Al2O3 or SiC); the size, shape, volume fraction, interfacial properties and distribution of these (together with the fabrication method) determine the mechanical behaviour of the composite. However, PRMMCs have inferior ductility, toughness and low-cycle fatigue properties compared with unreinforced alloys, often limiting their usefulness in practice. Reinforcements of between 15 volume % and …

Residual Stress Effects On Fatigue Crack Growth From A T-Butt Weld Toe, Alan K. Hellier, H. Li, B. G. Prusty, G. M. Pearce, M. Reid, A. M. Paradowska Jan 2018

Residual Stress Effects On Fatigue Crack Growth From A T-Butt Weld Toe, Alan K. Hellier, H. Li, B. G. Prusty, G. M. Pearce, M. Reid, A. M. Paradowska

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A350 grade black mild steel is one of the most widely used structural materials in the world, being commonly found in buildings, bridges and offshore structures.Welding is commonly used to join two plates of structural steel and this often takes the form of a T-butt.In addition, other more complex geometrical joints are often simplified for stress analysis purposes by approximating them as 2-D T-butt plate models (e.g. skewed T-joints, cruciform welded joints, tubular welded joints, pipe–plate joints, etc.).However, all such welds are potentially susceptible to fatigue crack initiation and slow but accelerating growth arising as a result of fluctuating service …

Fracture Toughness Measurement For Aluminium 6061-T6 Using Notched Round Bars, Alan K. Hellier, P. P. Chaphalkar, B. G. Prusty Jan 2017

Fracture Toughness Measurement For Aluminium 6061-T6 Using Notched Round Bars, Alan K. Hellier, P. P. Chaphalkar, B. G. Prusty

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Current standard testing methods for determining plane strain fracture toughness (KIc), such as ASTM E399 and ASTM E1820, require a prior estimate of KIc, plus the specimens are large, involve a lot of machining and need fatigue pre-cracking. There is therefore a desire to develop new testing techniques which are simple, as well as cost and time effective. While the use of tensile notched round bars (NRB) test pieces is not novel, dating back to a conference paper by Brown in 1975, relatively few authors have so far attempted this.

Railway Turnout Failure Mode Analysis, H. Li, M. Carkagis, Alan K. Hellier, H. Zhu, J. Mcleod, S. Pannila Jan 2017

Railway Turnout Failure Mode Analysis, H. Li, M. Carkagis, Alan K. Hellier, H. Zhu, J. Mcleod, S. Pannila

A section of New South Wales’ railways rail turnout was removed, since testing revealed that it had become defective and no longer fit-for-purpose (see photos). The University of Wollongong was commissioned to investigate the failure mode of the track section, and to provide a detailed report on the material composition, heat treatment, surface finish, wear and any material defects. Since the turnout is over 25 years old, there are no test certificates or other quality assurance documents available for review.
