Measuring The Success Of Intervention Programmes Designed To Increase The Participation Rate By Women In Computing, Annemieke Craig, Linda Dawson, Julie Fisher

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

Many intervention programmes to encourage greater female participation in computer education and careers have been conducted in the last twenty years. These intervention programmes take considerable time, effort and money to design and implement. If success were to be measured by an increase in the percentage of female students undertaking computing courses then these programmes would have to be considered a failure. This paper describes a research project which examined fourteen intervention programmes in detail. From the perspective of the programme champions each of the intervention programmes was considered successful, even when this success was restricted to specific areas or …

Performance Based Seismic Assessment Of Bridges Designed According To Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, M Neaz Sheikh, Frederic Legeron Jan 2014

Performance Based Seismic Assessment Of Bridges Designed According To Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, M Neaz Sheikh, Frederic Legeron

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recent research efforts have focused on the development of performance based seismic design methodologies for structures. However, the seismic design rules prescribed in the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) is based largely on force based design principles. Although a set of performance requirements (performance objectives) for different return period earthquake events have been specified, there is no explicit requirement in the CHBDC to check the attainment of such performance objectives for the designed bridges. Also, no engineering parameters have been assigned to the specified performance objectives. This paper correlates seismic performance objectives (both qualitative and quantitative) with engineering …

Dynamic Testing Of Tekseal High Yield Grout To Provide An Orepass Plug Designed For Impact, I V. S Mutton, Alexander Remennikov, D Pateman Oct 2013

Dynamic Testing Of Tekseal High Yield Grout To Provide An Orepass Plug Designed For Impact, I V. S Mutton, Alexander Remennikov, D Pateman

Alex Remennikov

Significant wear in orepasses particularly in the brow and chute areas is proportional to the tonnage throughput with increased wear associated with running orepasses empty. During planned shutdowns it may be necessary to isolate maintenance crews from objects falling from orepasses. In the last 15 years grout orepass plugs that can later be easily removed have been poured above chute maintenance areas. These provide protection from high energy impact and isolating workers from the hazard. Construction and removal methods will be briefly explained. Since it is not feasible to investigate the problem of orepass plug impact response using full-scale experimental …
