Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent Aug 2014

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Doctoral Dissertations

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …

Sample Design Using Imperfect Design Data, Robert Clark Apr 2014

Sample Design Using Imperfect Design Data, Robert Clark

Robert Clark

A well-designed sampling plan can greatly enhance the information that can be produced from a survey. Once a broad sample design is identified, specific design parameters such as sample sizes and selection probabilities need to be chosen. This is typically achieved using an optimal sample design, which minimizes the variance of a key statistic or statistics, expressed as a function of design parameters and population characteristics, subject to a cost constraint. In practice, only imprecise estimates of population characteristics are available, but the effects of this variability are usually ignored. A general approach to sample allocation allowing for imprecise design …

Rail Track Infrastructure For Enhanced Speed - Analysis Design And Construction Challenges, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Shrawan Nimbalkar, Jayan Sylaja J S Vinod

Buddhima Indraratna

Rail is one of the largest transportation modes offering freight and passenger traffic in rapidly developing nations, including India. Conscious efforts to improve productivity, modernization and technology upgrading have led to an impressive growth in railways. Large-scale physical modeling, sophisticated numerical modeling and full-scale field monitoring often provide significant knowledge to better understand track performance and to extend the current state-of-the-art in design. A series of large-scale laboratory tests were conducted to establish relationships between (i) ballast breakage and train speed, (ii) ballast fouling and strength and (iii) interface strength and geogrids. Comprehensive field trials were carried out on instrumented …

Performance Based Seismic Assessment Of Bridges Designed According To Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, M Neaz Sheikh, Frederic Legeron

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recent research efforts have focused on the development of performance based seismic design methodologies for structures. However, the seismic design rules prescribed in the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) is based largely on force based design principles. Although a set of performance requirements (performance objectives) for different return period earthquake events have been specified, there is no explicit requirement in the CHBDC to check the attainment of such performance objectives for the designed bridges. Also, no engineering parameters have been assigned to the specified performance objectives. This paper correlates seismic performance objectives (both qualitative and quantitative) with engineering …

Liner Ship Route Schedule Design With Port Time Windows, Shuaian Wang, Abdurahim Alharbi, Pamela Davy Jan 2014

Liner Ship Route Schedule Design With Port Time Windows, Shuaian Wang, Abdurahim Alharbi, Pamela Davy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper examines a practical tactical liner ship route schedule design problem, which is the determination of the arrival and departure time at each port of call on the ship route. When designing the schedule, the availability of each port in a week, i.e., port time window, is incorporated. As a result, the designed schedule can be applied in practice without or with only minimum revisions. This problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear nonconvex optimization model. In view of the problem structure, an efficient holistic solution approach is proposed to obtain global optimal solution. The proposed solution method is …

Global Intermodal Liner Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Qiang Meng, Shuaian Wang, Zhuo Sun Jan 2014

Global Intermodal Liner Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Qiang Meng, Shuaian Wang, Zhuo Sun

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a holistic analysis for the network design problem of the intermodal liner shipping system. Existing methods for liner shipping network design mainly deal with port-to-port demand. However, most of the demand has inland origins and/or destinations. Thus, it is necessary to cope with inland origin-destination (OD) pairs involving a change in transport mode from inland transportation to maritime shipping. A method is first proposed to convert inland OD demand to port-to-port demand. Then, a framework for global intermodal liner shipping network design is proposed. Finally, the proposed methodology is applied to and numerically verified by a large-scale …

Small Field In-Air Output Factors: The Role Of Miniphantom Design And Dosimeter Type, Kirbie Warrener, Benjamin Hug, Paul Liu, Anna Ralston, Martin A. Ebert, David Mckenzie, Natalka Suchowerska

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The commissioning of treatment planning systems and beam modeling requires measured input parameters. The measurement of relative output in-air, Sc is particularly difficult for small fields. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of miniphantom design and detector selection on measured Sc values for small fields and to validate the measurements against Monte Carlo simulations. Measurements were performed using brass caps (with sidewalls) or tops (no sidewalls) of varying heights and widths. The performance of two unshielded diodes (60012 and SFD), EBT2 radiochromic film, and a fiber optic dosimeter (FOD) were compared for fields defined by MLCs …

Geometric Design Optimization For Dynamic Response Problem Of Continuous Reinforced Concrete Beams, Pezhman Sharafi, Muhammad Hadi, Lip H. Teh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a computer-aided design method for conceptual geometric layout optimization of multispan RC beams for any type of dynamic responses. A key feature of the paper is the development of a new cost-optimization method for geometric layout problems that take both cost parameters and dynamic responses into account to achieve an optimum design along with acceptable dynamic performance of RC beams. This method takes advantage of employing a new optimization formulation that considerably simplifies the preliminary layout design computations. It focuses on minimizing the structural cost subject to constraints on eigenfrequencies, modal shapes, and the static and dynamic …

Optimal Design Of Semi Active Control For Adjacent Buildings Connected By Mr Damper Based On Integrated Fuzzy Logic And Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm, Mehmet Uz, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An optimal design strategy based on genetic algorithms (GA) is proposed for nonlinear hysteretic control devices that prevent pounding damage and achieve the best results in seismic response mitigation of two adjacent structures. An integrated fuzzy controller is used in order to provide the interactive relationships between damper forces and input voltages for MR dampers based on the modified Bouc-Wen model. Furthermore, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and H2/LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controllers based on clipped voltage law (CVL) are also used to compare the results obtained by fuzzy controller. This study employs the main objectives of the optimal design that …

Influence Of Pallets On The Behaviour And Design Of Steel Drive-In Racks, Benoit Gilbert, Lip H. Teh, Romain X. Badet, Kim Rasmussen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper analyses the influence of horizontal bracing restraints provided by the friction between pallet bases and rail beams on the static behaviour and design of steel drive-in storage racks. The pallet bracing restraints are shown to significantly influence the structural behaviour of the rack, and their effect on the bending moment distribution of the uprights is studied in the paper. The 2D single upright model proposed by Godley is improved in this study by including the restraints provided by the plan flexural stiffness of the rail beams and the friction between the pallets and rail beams. The improved 2D …

Optimal Design Of Vertical Ground Heat Exchangers By Using Entropy Generation Minimization Method And Genetic Algorithms, Su Huang, Zhenjun Ma, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the development and validation of an optimal design methodology for vertical U-tube ground heat exchangers (GHEs) used in HVAC systems. The dimensionless entropy generation number obtained by scaling the entropy generation due to heat transfer and pressure drop, on the ratio of the heat transfer rate to the average fluid temperature of vertical GHEs is employed as the objective function. Five design variables are first selected based on the global sensitivity analysis and then optimized by a genetic algorithm optimization technique. The entropy generation process combines the heat transfer and fluid mechanics with thermodynamic analysis. A case …
