Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy: Three Things To Keep In Mind, Keith W. Zirkle
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy: Three Things To Keep In Mind, Keith W. Zirkle
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
A culture of philanthropy is necessary for a nonprofit to be successful in 2016. Resources and funds are not so bountiful as they were in the past. Every nonprofit is different and has a different audience, but in general, there are three items to keep in mind while developing a philanthropic culture: 1) nonprofits should strategically plan their culture; 2) nonprofits should engage their own employees and volunteers in the culture; and 3) nonprofits must actively appreciate their donors, old and new.
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy In Nonprofit Arts Organizations, Adam B. Ferguson
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy In Nonprofit Arts Organizations, Adam B. Ferguson
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
This paper explores a growing theory known as a culture of philanthropy through the lens of a nonprofit arts organization. A culture of philanthropy refers to an organization’s attitude toward philanthropy, fund development, and the effort to create a community of donor inclusion which can have a lasting effect on the organization and the community well beyond financial growth. Arts organizations are exploring radical innovative methods in order to create a culture of funders, continuous patronage, and community engagement.
This paper also discusses the concept of venture philanthropy and its efforts to change the relationship between funders and grantees from …
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah
Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah
PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector
There are many elements to consider when creating a culture of philanthropy. First, one must acknowledge the definition of philanthropy. Philanthropy is defined as “the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 1). Although this is true, an organization which promotes a culture of philanthropy may view philanthropy as its broader definition of “an effort to promote human welfare” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 2). A culture of philanthropy is a newly perceived way for organizations to view the process of securing resources (Gibson, 2016). There are four components on which a …
A Primer On Grant Writing For Foundation Support For First-Time Grant Writers In Academic Libraries: Challenges And Opportunities, Peter L. Kraus
A Primer On Grant Writing For Foundation Support For First-Time Grant Writers In Academic Libraries: Challenges And Opportunities, Peter L. Kraus
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In a majority of academic disciplines, grant writing is a skill that is often self-taught or acquired informally by trial and error. Few academic disciplines have grant writing as standard part of their curriculum at the graduate level. In the past, grant writing has received little or no emphasis in traditional library education since library science faculty themselves have a poor record of pursuing external funding. Yet, grant writing is a critical skill for new and experienced librarians. For many librarians, the prospect and challenge of writing a grant can seem daunting; however, with institutional support and the support of …
Art For Social Change: Supporting Art For Community Building, New Philanthropic Orientations In Egypt, Cathrine Cornett
Art For Social Change: Supporting Art For Community Building, New Philanthropic Orientations In Egypt, Cathrine Cornett
Faculty Journal Articles
Taking stock of recent developments in the field of philanthropy concerning the theme of Art for Social Change, this paper shall analyze the new cultural and artistic trends in civic participation and social engagement in Egypt that take their root well before the revolution and could be further emphasized following the Uprisings. The focus will be on new philanthropic orientations fostering community based cultural expressions rather than 'elitist' art forms or already recognized performing artists (concerts, opera, and blockbuster films). The past two years have witnessed a considerable number of artists, intellectuals and cultural activists being at the forefront of …
Gastrophilanthropy: Utopian Aspiration And Aspirational Consumption As Political Retreat, Patricia Mooney Nickel, Angela M. Eikenberry
Gastrophilanthropy: Utopian Aspiration And Aspirational Consumption As Political Retreat, Patricia Mooney Nickel, Angela M. Eikenberry
Public Administration Faculty Publications
In this paper we inquire into the practice of gastrophilanthropy—the individualized consumption of food products under the aegis of philanthropic action. In particular, we examine the case of the philanthropic cupcake. By positioning gastrophilanthropy within the complex of consumption and social relations of power we attempt to shed light on why it has become so well accepted in society today and how the impulse to consume and the impulse to be philanthropic relate to each other and to the contemporary political moment. We question the transformative impact of gastrophilanthropy on those who practice it and on those for whom it …
Book Review: Sievers, B. R. (2010). Civil Society, Philanthropy, And The Fate Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Book Review: Sievers, B. R. (2010). Civil Society, Philanthropy, And The Fate Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The selection of civil society institutions (which the author refers to as strands) around which the volume is woven is interesting because it contains several novel elements in a novel combination: civil society is said to consist of philanthropy, the common good, rule of law, nonprofit and voluntary institutions, individual rights, free expression and tolerance. This book is important reading for political philosophers, doctoral students and theorists interested in the connection of civil society and philanthropy. Yet it has a number of weaknesses that are enumerated in the review.

The Impact Of Giving Together: Giving Circles’ Influence On Members’ Philanthropic And Civic Behaviors, Knowledge And Attitudes, Angela M. Eikenberry, Jessica Bearman, Hao Han, Melissa Brown, Courtney Jensen
Public Administration Faculty Publications
Giving circles are made up of individuals who pool their resources and then decide together where these should be distributed. They also include social, educational, and engagement components that seem to engage participants in their communities and increase members’ understanding of philanthropy and community issues.
This study examines if and how participation in a giving circle has changed members’ behavior related to giving, volunteering, and civic engagement. In addition, we asked if and how participation in a giving circle has changed members’ awareness or knowledge about philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, and community issues. Finally, we wanted to know if and how …

Donors in giving circles give more, give more strategically, and are more engaged in their communities, according to a new study by Dr. Angela Eikenberry and Jessica Bearman with research assistance from Melissa Brown, Hao Han, and Courtney Jensen. ever since giving circles—groups of individual donors who pool their money and other resources and decide together where these should be distributed—emerged as a philanthropic trend, we have speculated about their impact. Do donors give more or give differently because they are involved in a giving circle? Do they become more engaged and active in their communities? Are they more politically …
Obama's Budget Offers Smart Shift, Angela M. Eikenberry
Obama's Budget Offers Smart Shift, Angela M. Eikenberry
Public Administration Faculty Publications
Beginning in 2011, President Barack Obama's proposed budget plan would reduce the value of charitable tax deductions for wealthy Americans (families with more than $250,000 in income, 1.2 percent of households) to 28 cents on the dollar.
At the same time, the president's budget also would increase taxes for this group (from 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent of their income) to help pay for reshaping the nation's health care system. The tax deduction changes would not affect foundations or Americans making less than $250,000 a year.
Some in the philanthropic community argue that this …

The New Philanthropy In The New West Virginia, Roger A. Lohmann
The New Philanthropy In The New West Virginia, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Although philanthropy is a very old concept, many authorities today see a new philanthropy, including dramatic increases in donations and the assets of foundations. Also a new West Virginia may be emerging from the past of the forest agriculture of buckskin-clad mountaineers and coal mining. This presentation examines the convergence of the new philanthropy and this new West Virginia.

Philanthropic Partnerships: The Theory Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Philanthropic Partnerships: The Theory Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The third sector is the sector of commons in the same sense that the market is the sector of profit-oriented firms and the state is the sector of public bureaucracies. In its present state, nonprofit theory is largely the creation of committees of lawyers and accountants concerned only with very narrow questions. Despite its limitations, the contemporary philanthropic world has been reluctant to embrace any substitute universal summary terms to describe or characterize the ful range of concerns covered by concerns of philanthropy. Commons theory offers a possible alternative capable of dealing with the full range of philanthropic concerns.
