Energy Conservation Day: Symbolism Doesn’T Pay, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan
Energy Conservation Day: Symbolism Doesn’T Pay, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan
Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan
The much publicised panting competition at school level on the occasion of Energy Conservation Day was a good effort to send message to consumers to influence their energy consumption behaviour. But the effect is minuscule.
As a child one might have walked or cycled to school. But as a breadwinner, once energy related decisions largely get influenced by one's income level and opportunities and restrictions.

Control And Resilience Within The Maritime Traffic Management Domain, Gesa Praetorius
Control And Resilience Within The Maritime Traffic Management Domain, Gesa Praetorius

This article presents research conducted within the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) domain. VTS is a service that is provided close to ports and geographically challenging areas to support merchant vessels in their navigation. Although VTS is legally an advice and assistance service, applying concepts from Cognitive Systems Engineering and Resilience Engineering can highlight how the joint human-machine system works to promote safe and efficient traffic movements. The VTS is a Joint Cognitive System that maintains control through a mixture of opportunistic and tactical control. Strategic control is only partially supported by the higher levels of system aggregation that provide the …

Analysis Of The Frequency And Severity Of Rear-End Crashes In Work Zones, Yi Qi, Raghavan Srinivasan, Hualiang Teng, Robert Baker
Yi Qi
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the factors that influence the frequency and severity of rear-end crashes in work zones because rear-end crashes represent a significant proportion of crashes that occur in work zones. METHODS: Truncated count data models were developed to identify influencing factors on the frequency of rear-end crashes in work zones and ordered probit models were developed to evaluate influencing factors on the severity of rear-end crashes in work zones. RESULTS: Most of the variables identified in this study for these 2 models were significant at the 95 percent level. The statistics for models …

The Airline Passenger Survey is an annual survey of frequent fliers who visit the web site for the Airline Quality Rating. Since 2009, over 4,000 passengers have responded to researchers’ request to provide a consumer perspective on the quality of today’s air travel experience. Airline Quality Rating researchers at Purdue University and Wichita State University compare the consumer experience of air travel with the objective rankings of the Airline Quality Rating (www.airlinequalityrating.com). These detailed findings are provided publicly and periodically released to the media.
Vessel Traffic Service (Vts): A Maritime Information Service Or Traffic Control System? Understanding Everyday Performance And Resilience In A Socio-Technical System Under Change, Gesa Praetorius
Gesa Praetorius
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a shore-side maritime assistance service that supports bridge teams in their safe navigation of port approaches and other areas that present navigational difficulties. The VTS is implemented in national waters and provides vessels with information through transmissions and broadcasts on Very High Frequency (VHF) radio. With a continued growth in the number, size and cargo volumes of merchant vessels, the role of the VTS has recently become a matter of discussion, and it has been argued that changes, such as implementing an aviation-like control system, would be of an enormous benefit for stakeholders and guarantee …

Mechanisms For Arranging Ride Sharing And Fare Splitting For Last-Mile Travel Demands, Shih-Fen Cheng, Duc Thien Nguyen, Hoong Chuin Lau
Shih-Fen CHENG
A great challenge of city planners is to provide efficient and effective connection service to travelers using public transportation system. This is commonly known as the last-mile problem and is critical in promoting the utilization of public transportation system. In this paper, we address the last-mile problem by considering a dynamic and demand-responsive mechanism for arranging ride sharing on a non-dedicated commercial fleet (such as taxis or passenger vans). Our approach has the benefits of being dynamic, flexible, and with low setup cost. A critical issue in such ride-sharing service is how riders should be grouped and serviced, and how …

Beginning in 2011, there have been several policy changes directly affecting the management, preservation, and accessibility of publically funded research and resulting research data in the United States. On January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals (National Science Foundation, 2013). On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies that have a research and development budget of more than $100 million (Holdren, 2013). These requirements illustrate the need for further coordination …
