Updating Soulful Girls, Hailey Ryan
Updating Soulful Girls, Hailey Ryan
Senior Honors Projects
The ages of 10-13 are pivotal in the development of self esteem for girls. This is the beginning of the understanding of societal pressures, values and expectations that are placed on women and girls. Girls start to focus on their appearance, avoid activities where they may “fail” and place significant value on their social status. This project strives to counter these ideals and prove to girls that they are wildly capable and innately worthy through weekly workshops provided by The Soul Project. The Soul project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and girls recognize their innate value and …

Helping Your Children Develop Positive, Successful Sibling Relationships: A 4-Session Parenting Workshop, Caitlin Marie Younger Sackett
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Decades of research studies have underscored the significant impact siblings have on life outcomes. Those with successful (e.g., positive, close, supportive) sibling relationships experience benefits such as more competent social and emotional skills, healthier well-being, and increased life satisfaction compared to those with unsuccessful (e.g., negative, distant, conflictual) sibling relationships who tend to be less skilled in social situations, have lower emotional regulation skills, decreased psychological well-being, and report higher levels of loneliness in old age. The quality of sibling relationships is strongly associated with parental behaviors beginning in early childhood. However, there are few research-based resources available for parents …

A One-Session, Brief Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Workshop For Chronic Pain Patients: A One-Sample Pretest-Posttest Prospective Exploratory Study, Kelly Anne Thomas Ms
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Chronic pain affects one in every four persons (NIH, 2010). For individuals residing in rural communities where chronic pain treatment is often not accessible (Artnak et al., 2011), a one-session brief mental health intervention is a critical healthcare need. More specifically, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for chronic pain is a novel treatment approach in need of more research (Society of Clinical Psychology, 2016). This current study contributes to the gap in the literature by implementing an ACT workshop in a rural healthcare setting for individuals with chronic pain. It was hypothesized that the workshop would increase adaptive coping mechanisms …
From The Achievement Gap To The Opportunity Gap: Increasing Accountability Among Faculty And Staff In Stem Through An Inclusion And Social Mindfulness Intervention, Kayla Christiani
WWU Graduate School Collection
Racial disparities in graduation rates and academic performance measurements have long existed in higher education (Bowen et al., 2009) and are even more pronounced in STEM fields (RiegleCrumb et al., 2019). Some researchers argue that students of color are experiencing a gap in opportunity due to racial hostility and exclusion both on campus and in the classroom, and interventions should focus on changing the negative environment students of color are exposed to at colleges and universities (Johnson-Ahorlu, 2012). Faculty members at Western Washington University (WWU) developed the Inclusion and Social Mindfulness in STEM (ISMs) workshop series in an effort to …
