Character Strengths Of Students At Risk Of Dropping Out Of High School, Sarah Baker
Character Strengths Of Students At Risk Of Dropping Out Of High School, Sarah Baker
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
The goal of this study was to determine the participants' perceptions about what strengths at-risk students who follow through and graduate from high school have, using the conceptual framework of positive psychology, and its classification system of virtues and character strengths. To reveal the strengths of these students, this study used a qualitative methodology, interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). In addition, the participants were asked to fill out a Likert scale survey to rate how frequently at-risk students who graduated employed each of the 24 VIA characteristics. The purpose of this study was to add to the under-researched area of identifying …

Ethnic Minority High School Students: Academic Self-Efficacy And College Preparedness, Melanie Ann Faustino Hansen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In an effort to better understand high school student's academic self-efficacy and college preparedness, 165 students were surveyed at the Utah State University event Diversity Day held on November 21st, 2014. As such, we collaborated with the Utah State University Admissions office so that all evaluation materials and results could be used for future recruitment purposes. Students were asked questions designated to gain insight into the factors they determined to be important when choosing to attend college, selecting a college to attend, and how prepared they viewed themselves to succeed in college. In addition, basic measures were also taken that …

Gender-variant-based victimization is victimization based on the way others perceive an individual to convey masculine, feminine, and androgynous characteristics through their appearance, mannerisms, and behaviors. Previous work identifies gender-variant-based victimization as a risk factor for health-risking outcomes among same-sex attracted youths. The current study seeks to examine this relationship among other-sex attracted youths and same-sex attracted youth, and determine if gender-variant-based victimization is similarly or differentially associated with poor outcomes between these two groups. Anonymous data from a school-based survey of 2,438 racially diverse middle and high school students in the Eastern U.S. was examined. For other-sex attracted adolescents, gender-variantbased …

Physical Activity And Sports Team Participation As Predictors Of Suicidal Behavior In High School Students, Jacquelyn E. O'Connor
Physical Activity And Sports Team Participation As Predictors Of Suicidal Behavior In High School Students, Jacquelyn E. O'Connor
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Youth suicidal behavior is a significant and worldwide public health problem. Although a variety of demographic variables and risk factors have been found to be associated with youth suicidal behavior, research on wellness activities that may be inversely associated with youth suicidal behavior is lacking. Using the Center for Disease Control’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) data from 2011, this study examined the relationship between physical activity, sports participation, and suicidal behavior in high school students. Results indicated that suicidality did vary by level of physical activity in the sample used in the study (t = 4.679, p = …

The current educational policy context in the United States necessitates that school-based programs prioritize students’ academic outcomes. This review examined the quantitative research on school mental health (SMH) early interventions and academic outcomes for at risk high school students. Seven articles met the inclusion criteria for this review. All articles were examined according to study design and demographics, early intervention characteristics, and outcomes. Of the studies included, most were conducted in urban settings, involved the implementation of group-based early intervention strategies, and monitored GPA as a distal academic outcome. Counselors were frequent implementers of these early interventions. A meta-analysis found …
