Aiding Young Children In Taiwan's Typhoon Disaster: How An Naeyc Interest Forum Takes Action, S. C. Yen, S. Baba, Ellen N. Junn Sep 2010

Aiding Young Children In Taiwan's Typhoon Disaster: How An Naeyc Interest Forum Takes Action, S. C. Yen, S. Baba, Ellen N. Junn

Ellen N. Junn

The article describes the strategies learned by members of the Asian Interest Forum (AIF) who collaborated with parents and early childhood teachers on how to help young children cope with natural disasters in Taiwan. Shu-Chen Jenny Yen and Yafen Lo, AIF leaders, have translated information on how to cope with natural disasters into Chinese and sent it to their colleagues in Taiwan. Yen also visited the country where she trained early childhood teachers and volunteers to help children and their families deal with the effects of the natural disaster.

Prospect Theory, Indifference Curves, And Hedging Risks, Udo Broll, Martin Egozcue, Wing Keung Wong, Ricardas Zitikis Aug 2010

Prospect Theory, Indifference Curves, And Hedging Risks, Udo Broll, Martin Egozcue, Wing Keung Wong, Ricardas Zitikis

Martin Egozcue

The prospect theory is one of the most popular decision-making theories. It is based on S-shaped utility functions, unlike the von Neumann and Morgenstern (NM) theory, which is based on concave utility functions. The S-shaped functions bring challenges, and extensions and generalizations of the NM theory into the prospect theory are not always possible. For example, in the prospect theory, the monotonicity of indifference curves depends on the underlying mean, unlike in the NM theory. Risk-hedging deci- sions also become more complex within the prospect theory. In this paper, we discuss these topics and establish general results concerning certain covariances …

Plasma Prekallikrein Levels Are Positively Associated With Circulating Lipid Levels And The Metabolic Syndrome In Children., James A. Mackenzie, Kristen A. Roosa, Brooks B. Gump, Amy K. Dumas, Kestutis G. Bendinskas Jul 2010

Plasma Prekallikrein Levels Are Positively Associated With Circulating Lipid Levels And The Metabolic Syndrome In Children., James A. Mackenzie, Kristen A. Roosa, Brooks B. Gump, Amy K. Dumas, Kestutis G. Bendinskas

Brooks B. Gump

Plasma prekallikrein (PK) has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors, but these associations have not been investigated in children. The present study examined PK activity in relation to well-established cardiovascular risk factors in a cohort of children aged 9–11 years (N = 97). We found a significant and positive association between PK and fasting levels of total cholesterol (p < 0.01), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.01), and triglycerides (p < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant association between PK activity and the metabolic syndrome, a clustering of risk factors considered to have an impact on atherosclerosis and CVD mortality. Finally, we found that children with a family history of CVD had significantly elevated PK activity. These novel findings warrant further investigations into the relationship between circulating PK levels and CVD risk factors because PK may be involved in the progression of the disease state.

Measuring Emotions In Electronic Auctions, Marc Adam Jun 2010

Measuring Emotions In Electronic Auctions, Marc Adam

Marc T. P. Adam

Auctions are nowadays a popular and frequently employed market mechanism in electronic markets. In economic literature, the success of electronic auctions has been largely attributed to the reduction of transaction costs, the large number of potential buyers, and the independence of time and space. However, an additional explanation for the success of electronic markets, and in particular Internet consumer auctions, is the hedonic or emotional value bidders derive from auction participation. The emotionality bidders experience in Internet auctions confronts a market engineer of electronic markets with two important challenges, regarding both the auction mechanism design and the user interface design. …

Segregation And Integration: A Study Of The Behaviors Of Investors With Extended Value Functions, Martin Egozcue, Wing Keung Wong

Martin Egozcue

This paper extends prospect theory, mental accounting, and the hedonic editing model by developing an analytical theory to explain the behavior of investors with extended value functions in segregating or integrating multiple outcomes when evaluating mental accounting.

Effect Of Full-Service Partnerships On Homelessness, Use And Costs Of Mental Health Services, And Quality Of Life Among Adults With Serious Mental Illness, Sam Tsemberis Jun 2010

Effect Of Full-Service Partnerships On Homelessness, Use And Costs Of Mental Health Services, And Quality Of Life Among Adults With Serious Mental Illness, Sam Tsemberis

Sam Tsemberis

Context: Chronically homeless adults with severe mental illness are heavy users of costly inpatient and emergency psychiatric services. Full-service partnerships (FSPs) provide housing and engage clients in treatment. Design: A quasi-experimental, difference-in-difference design with a propensity score–matched control group was used to compare mental health service use and costs of FSP with public mental health services. Recovery outcomes were compared before and after services use, and quality of life was compared cross-sectionally. Conclusions: Participation in an FSP was associated with substantial increases in outpatient services and days spent in housing. Reductions in costs of inpatient/emergency and justice system services offset …

Universal Truth - Rays Of Light For The Future, Effenus Henderson Jun 2010

Universal Truth - Rays Of Light For The Future, Effenus Henderson

Effenus Henderson

There is such truth that only God knows.

It is inextricably bound in the rays of light, in the movements and patterns of life, and in the sparkle in the observer’s eye. It is in the “collective will” that he has shared among and within all us. Each of us possesses a part of his glorious master plan. In all of us is the answer to survival and sustainability.

Heroes And Villains: Cultural Narratives, Mass Opinions, And Climate Change, Michael Jones May 2010

Heroes And Villains: Cultural Narratives, Mass Opinions, And Climate Change, Michael Jones

Michael D. Jones

Global climate change is easily identified as one of the most pressing and contentious policy problems facing not only the United States, but the human race. In a democratic society such as our own, understanding the public’s capacities and tendencies in processing information and forming opinions about climate change has serious and far-reaching policy implications. Historically quite low, public knowledge about climate change is now on the rise, as is the importance of the issue on the public agenda (Leiserowitz, 2005). Consequently, it is not unreasonable to expect the public, for better or worse, to play a larger role in …

Diversity Is Divine Will - An Essay On Spiritual And Religious Pluralism And Inclusion, Effenus Henderson, Khaled Beydoun Esq.

Effenus Henderson

This essay is intended to serve as a tool for helping facilitate discussion and dialogue about religious and spiritual differences at home, in work teams, at school, and communities. Its key theme is one of seeking to understand and appreciate, not disparage others because of their differences. It is not intended to be an in-depth resource on the topic but a background paper to help initiate discussion and learning, and to build intercultural and religious understanding

Effects Of Leas And Mecury On The Blood Proteome Of Children, Robert E. Birsall, Michael P. Kiley, Zaneer M. Segu, Christopher D. Palmer, Milan Madera, Brooks B. Gump Mar 2010

Effects Of Leas And Mecury On The Blood Proteome Of Children, Robert E. Birsall, Michael P. Kiley, Zaneer M. Segu, Christopher D. Palmer, Milan Madera, Brooks B. Gump

Brooks B. Gump

Heavy metal exposure in children has been associated with a variety of physiological and neurological problems. The goal of this study was to utilize proteomics to enhance the understanding of biochemical interactions responsible for the health problems related to lead and mercury exposure at concentrations well below CDC guidelines. Blood plasma and serum samples from 34 children were depleted of their most abundant proteins using antibody-based affinity columns and analyzed using two different methods, LC-MS/MS and 2-D electrophoresis coupled with MALDI-TOF/MS and tandem mass spectrometry. Apolipoprotein E demonstrated an inverse significant association with lead concentrations (average being one microgram/deciliter) as …

Gains From Diversification On Convex Combinations: A Majorization And Stochastic Dominance Approach, Martin Egozcue, Wing Keung Wong Jan 2010

Gains From Diversification On Convex Combinations: A Majorization And Stochastic Dominance Approach, Martin Egozcue, Wing Keung Wong

Martin Egozcue

By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a gen- eral theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse inves- tors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combinations of assets that characterize a portfolio to give higher expected utility by second-order stochastic dominance. Our findings also provide an additional methodology for determining the second-order stochastic dominance efficient set.

The Role Of Slope In Human Reorientation, Daniele Nardi, Nora S. Newcombe, Thomas F. Shipley Jan 2010

The Role Of Slope In Human Reorientation, Daniele Nardi, Nora S. Newcombe, Thomas F. Shipley

Daniele Nardi

Studies of spatial representation generally focus on flat environments and visual stimuli. However, the world is not flat, and slopes are part of many natural environments. In a series of four experiments, we examined whether humans can use a slope as a source of allocentric, directional information for reorientation. A target was hidden in a corner of a square, featureless enclosure tilted at a 5° angle. Finding it required using the vestibular, kinesthetic and vis-ual cues associated with the slope gradient. Participants succeeded in the task; however, a large sex difference emerged. Men showed a greater ability in using slope …

Slope-Driven Goal Location Behavior In Pigeons, Daniele Nardi, Kristian P. Nitsch, Verner P. Bingman Jan 2010

Slope-Driven Goal Location Behavior In Pigeons, Daniele Nardi, Kristian P. Nitsch, Verner P. Bingman

Daniele Nardi

A basic tenet of principles of associative learning applicable to models of spatial learning is that a cue should be assigned greater weight if it is a better predictor of the goal location. Pigeons were trained to locate a goal in an acute corner of an isosceles trapezoid arena, presented on a slanted floor with 3 (Experiment 1) or 2 (Experiment 2) orientations. The goal could be consistently determined by the geometric shape of the arena; however, its position with respect to the slope gradient varied, such that slope position was not a good predictor of the goal. Pigeons learned …

A Longitudinal Study Of Conversations With Parents About Sex And Dating During College, Elizabeth M. Morgan, Avril Thorne, Eileen L. Zurbriggen

Elizabeth M. Morgan

Emerging adulthood is a time of sexual and romantic relationship development as well as change in the parent– child relationship. This study provides a longitudinal analysis of 30 young adults’ (17 women, 13 men) sexual experiences, attitudes about sexuality and dating, and reported conversations with parents about sexuality and dating from the 1st and 4th years of college. Self-report questionnaires revealed increases in general closeness with parents, increases in sexual and dating experiences, and more sexually permissive as well as more gender stereotyped attitudes. Qualitative analyses of individual interviews indicated a movement from unilateral and restrictive sex-based topics to more …

Teaching With Emotion: Enriching The Educational Experience Of First-Year Law Students, Grant H. Morris Jan 2010

Teaching With Emotion: Enriching The Educational Experience Of First-Year Law Students, Grant H. Morris

Grant H Morris

Through the case method and Socratic dialogue, first year law students are taught to develop critical legal analytic skills–to “think like a lawyer.” Those skills, however, are primarily, if not entirely, intellectual. This article discusses the need to address emotional issues in educating law students. Unlike other articles, my article does not merely urge professors to raise such issues in their classes and discuss them analytically. Rather, I want students to actually experience emotion in the classroom setting as they discuss various fact situations and the legal principles involved in the resolution of disputes involving those facts. Law students need …

Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Health And Illness, Ayse K. Uskul Jan 2010

Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Health And Illness, Ayse K. Uskul

Ayse K Uskul

This chapter will provide a summary of sociocultural differences observed in various aspects of health and illness, drawing on evidence from medical anthropology and health psychology. It will then introduce a theoretical framework borrowed from cultural psychology, one frequently adopted when examining cultural differences in areas such as social behaviour, cognition and emotion, but rarely implemented when examining cultural differences in the domain of health and illness. This will be followed by some recent research originating from the area of illness cognitions, health communication and coping (use of social support), which adopts this framework to understand cultural differences.

When Message-Frame Fits Salient Cultural-Frame, Messages Feel More Persuasive, Ayse K. Uskul, Daphna Oyserman

Ayse K Uskul

The present study examines the persuasive effects of tailored health messages comparing those tailored to match (versus not match) both chronic cultural frame and momentarily salient cultural frame. Evidence from two studies (Study 1: n=72 European Americans; Study 2: n=48 Asian Americans) supports the hypothesis that message persuasiveness increases when chronic cultural frame, health message tailoring and momentarily salient cultural frame all match. The hypothesis was tested using a message about health risks of caffeine consumption among individuals prescreened to be regular caffeine consumers. After being primed for individualism, European Americans who read a health message that focused on the …
