Exposure-Based Cognitive Behavioral Treatment For Phobic And Anxiety Disorders: Treatment Effects And Maintenance For Hispanic American Relative To Euro-American Youths, Rebecca M. Fuentes

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A total of 131 Hispanic American and Euro-American youths (ages 6 to 16 years) who participated in previous clinical trials for phobic and anxiety disorders were compared in terms of treatment gains and maintenance. In terms of treatment gains, the findings indicated that Hispanic American and Euro-American youths responded more similarly than differently to the exposure-based cognitive/behavioral treatments from pre- to post-treatment. This was found using traditional hypotheses testing, calculation of effect sizes, and statistical equivalence testing. In terms of treatment maintenance, the findings also demonstrated that Hispanic American and Euro- American youths responded more similarly than differently, albeit with …

Implications Of Adolescent Development Upon Transracial Adoptees, Anthony L. Burrow Nov 2002

Implications Of Adolescent Development Upon Transracial Adoptees, Anthony L. Burrow

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the present investigation was to examine the implications of adoption status upon the adjustment of adolescents, with a focus on transracial adoptees. Based upon secondary analyses of a nationally collected data set, three levels of analyses were undertaken to investigate group differences between: (a) adoptees and non-adoptees, (b) transracially adopted adolescents and same-race adopted adolescents and, (c) specific racial groupings of adopted children and their parents across a broad range of adjustment measures. The results indicated some evidence supporting increased maladjustment of adoptees compared to their non-adopted counterparts. Yet, when comparing groups of adopted adolescents, the results …

Teams Leading Teams: Examining The Role Of Leadership In Multi-Team Systems, Leslie A. Dechurch Oct 2002

Teams Leading Teams: Examining The Role Of Leadership In Multi-Team Systems, Leslie A. Dechurch

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major challenge of modern teams lies in the coordination of the efforts not just of individuals within a team, but also of teams whose efforts are ultimately entwined with those of other teams. Despite this fact, much of the research on work teams fails to consider the external dependencies that exist in organizational teams and instead focuses on internal or within team processes. Multi-Team Systems Theory is used as a theoretical framework for understanding teams-of-teams organizational forms (Multi-Team Systems; MTS's); and leadership teams are proposed as one remedy that enable MTS members to dedicate needed resources to intra-team activities …

The Effects Of Sexual Harassment Severity And Organizational Policy And Response On Juror Damage Awards, Stacie Ann Cass Jun 2002

The Effects Of Sexual Harassment Severity And Organizational Policy And Response On Juror Damage Awards, Stacie Ann Cass

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Community members who reported for jury duty (N = 123) read a brief summary of a sexual harassment trial, in which harassment severity and the organization's sexual harassment policy were manipulated. Jurors were more likely to agree that they should compensate the plaintiff for her pain and suffering, the organization should be punished, and the plaintiff had suffered when they read the more severe harassment scenario. When the organization had and enforced an effective sexual harassment policy, jurors believed that the plaintiff had suffered little and the organization should not be punished. Thus, severity of harassment influenced jurors' judgments about …

Social Support, Risk, And Adjustment Of Immigrant Preadolescents, Gastón Luis Bustos

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study was designed to explore the salience of social support, immigrant status, and risk in middle childhood and early adolescence across two time periods as indicated by measures of school adjustment and well-being. Participants included 691 children of public elementary schools in grades 4 and 6 who were interviewed in 1997 (Time 1) and reinterviewed two years later (Time 2); 539 were U.S.-born, and 152 were foreign-born.

Repeated measures multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA's) were conducted to assess the effects of immigrant status and risk on total support, well-being, and school adjustment from Time 1 to Time 2. …

Compensatory Effects Of Parent And Peer Support On Well-Being And Achievement During Pre-And Early Adolescence, Noel Alexander Crooks

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study was designed to explore the salience of parent and peer support in middle childhood and early adolescence across two time periods as indicated by measures of achievement (grade point average (GPA), Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) scores and teacher rated school adaptation) and well-being (loneliness, depression, self-concept and teacher-rated internalizing behaviors).

Participants were part of an initial study on social network relations and school adaptation in middle childhood and early adolescence. Participants at Time I (in the spring of 1997) included 782 children in grades 4 and 6 of eight lower and middle-income public elementary schools. Participants (N= …

The Construct Of Work Commitment: Testing An Integrative Framework, Amy Rachelle Cooper Mar 2002

The Construct Of Work Commitment: Testing An Integrative Framework, Amy Rachelle Cooper

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation meta-analytically examined the expansive material associated with work commitment. Work commitment, a multidimensional construct, encompasses the level of involvement an employee has with his or her work, organization, job, career, and union (Morrow & Goetz, 1998). Each of the dimensions of work commitment has been further divided into a number of subdimensions. The primary purpose of this study was to (1) cumulate the correlations found among each of the dimensions of work commitment to see which, if any, were intercorrelated, and to (2) determine the impact of work commitment dimensions and subdimensions on specific outcome variables (job satisfaction, …
