Three experiments were carried out with children in a private office on the measurement of distress caused by allergy treatment injections and on a behavioral technique to alleviate this treatment-induced distress. In Experiment 1 a rating scale to measure observable indices of distress with children receiving injections was developed and its construct validity and reliability determined. In Experiment 2, norms were derived for the sample of children studied and the nature of the expression of distress according to age and sex was examined. Training Abusive Parents In The Use Of Anger Control Procedures For Improving Parent-Child Interactions, Sharlyne M. Nomellini

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based multicomponent anger management program utilizing self-control procedures for: (a) decreasing frequencies of aversive parent behaviors directed toward target children and (b) altering parents'; angry feelings and subjective urges to physically harm their children in provocation situations. Abusive parents from three at-risk families were trained in the use of anger management skills tb aid them in coping with arousal on cognitive, somatic, and behavioral levels, simultaneously. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) in reducing levels of trait anxiety in undergraduates who enrolled in anxiety reduction workshops. S's were 44 volunteer male and female students from the University of the Pacific who enrolled in either an independent study or a mini-course series of 8 sessions, and were assigned to one of the three randomly designated groups: Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET), Attention Placebo (AP), or No-Treatment (NT). Transfer Of Household Management Skills From A Board And Care Home To An Experimental Apartment Via Programming Common Stimuli, Richard W. Couch

A random multielement design was used in two replications to assess the effectiveness of programming common stimuli to enhance the transfer of household management skills from a group home for mentally disabled adults to an experimental apartment. Salient stimulus items were taken from the subjects' group homes (training site) and placed in an experimental apartment (testing site) as the participants were advancing through a program to teach them independent living skills. The results suggest that the transfer of household management skills was enhanced by programming in stimuli from the training site.

Generalization Of Learned Helplessness : A Test Of The Attribution Theory Models, Jean Griffin

This study investigated the relationship between global/specific and stable/unstable dimensions of attributions and the generalization of helplessness across tasks and situations. Four groups of subjects were given instructions suggesting that their performance on a Venn diagram task could be attributed to (a) global or specific and (b) staple or unstable factors. Then, during performance of this task, these subjects were given noncontingent correctness feedback on their responses. A control group given the same task received no attribution instructions or feedback on their performance.
