Providing care and support to a relative or friend who has an illness, disease or disability is widely held to be a task which requires extensive emotional and physical resources and one which can place considerable strain on the carer. Over the last four decades a growing body of research has emerged, both in Australia and internationally, demonstrating the adverse physical, psychological, social and financial effects that caring can have on the well being of carers.
