Anger Suppression In Late Childhood, Dana Williams Dec 2020

Anger Suppression In Late Childhood, Dana Williams

Child Development Theses

Research on anger in childhood typically refers to “difficult” children. In academic, social, and family settings, anger is not being addressed unless it is causing a noticeable disturbance such as screaming and/or hitting. The negative attention associated with anger expression is part of the socialization of anger. Society has labeled anger as a negative emotion and this view leads to the suppression of this emotion to avoid negative attention. The literature on emotions in childhood highlights the negative outcomes that emotional suppression can create. A child’s expression of emotions is a combination of their external environment and their ability to …

Not "Bad Boys": Psychosocial Implications Of Aggression In Boys With Ptsd, Anjette Rostock Aug 2020

Not "Bad Boys": Psychosocial Implications Of Aggression In Boys With Ptsd, Anjette Rostock

Child Development Theses

This thesis explores different facets of childhood trauma, specifically focusing on aggressive behaviors. The impact of trauma can leave individuals, especially children, in a state of constant fight. Oftentimes, symptoms appear as tantrums, irritability, and defiance, which are perceived as “bad” behaviors by society. It is crucial that social workers, educators, doctors, policymakers, and parents alike learn to understand that a symptom is a piece of a larger puzzle. If we do not acknowledge the events that lead to certain behaviors in children, there will be serious socioemotional and societal consequences. In an attempt to highlight the complex nature of …

Models And Metaphors Of Play Therapy: The Role Of The Child Therapist, Agathe David-Weill Aug 2020

Models And Metaphors Of Play Therapy: The Role Of The Child Therapist, Agathe David-Weill

Child Development Theses

What is the role of a therapist in play therapy? How does play therapy actually work? While the contribution of pretend play to mental development has been widely discussed in research, how could it possibly translate into therapy? Play becomes a medium through which children can start thinking about the complicated parts of their lives and therapists can look for clues about them. But is there a “proper” way of being in the playroom with a child and if so what is it? Which methods are to be used in play therapy? When and with what child? Paying attention to …

The Criminal Justice System's Problematic Response To The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children, Alexandra Levitskaya Aug 2020

The Criminal Justice System's Problematic Response To The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children, Alexandra Levitskaya

Child Development Theses

There is a current problem with the way that the American criminal justice system is responding to survivors of commercial sexual exploitation of children, or CSEC. In this thesis, I will first acknowledge that this oppressive, abusive, and tragic reality cannot be fully examined in this one piece of writing and offer two areas of further exploration which are limited in this piece: international CSEC and the victimization of boys and transgender youth. I will then explore the development of CSEC on American soil, from how youth become coerced into “the life”, what physical and psychological tactics exploiters use, and …

The Value Of Play In Infant And Child Psychotherapy In A Group Attachment-Based Intervention (Gabi), Joana Hötte Fittipaldi

Child Development Theses

There is growing interest in examining how attachment-based therapeutic interventions in early childhood can strengthen the bond between parent and child and prevent the transmission of intergenerational trauma. In recent decades, advances in attachment research have contributed to a greater understanding of how important the parent-child relationship is for a child’s well-being and subsequent years in life. This thesis explores the value of play in children’s therapy, specifically its use in dyadic play therapy as a therapeutic technique to strengthen the bond between parent and child. Two case studies from an attachment-based intervention are presented, and focus is given to …

Cultivating Curiosity And Collaboration: Mentalizing As A Modality Of Intervention In Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Danielle M. Bryson

Child Development Theses

Parents and caregivers who are able to understand their own mental states are better able to hold a child’s mental states in mind, an important consideration for moderating negative perceptions of ADHD behavior. In this thesis, I discuss how mentalizing-focused treatment for parents and caregivers strengthens attachment bonds in families where a child is diagnosed with ADHD. I explore the effectiveness of mentalizing-focused treatment to parents, some of whom experience difficulty in understanding their own mental states, and all of whom experience challenges in interpreting the intentions and mental states of their children, particularly in families where a child has …

"He Knows Who He's Messing With": Hostile/Helpless Representations On The Parent Development Interview, Anna Kilbride May 2020

"He Knows Who He's Messing With": Hostile/Helpless Representations On The Parent Development Interview, Anna Kilbride

Child Development Theses

Current systems for assessing parenting narratives lack the capacity to capture representational phenomena associated with significantly disrupted attachment relationships. This thesis will describe the adaptation of the valid and reliable Hostile/Helpless (HH) coding system for use with the Parent Development Interview (PDI). The hostile–helpless dyadic model posits that these two relational stances derive from an unbalanced internal working model of attachment that is shaped over the course of a caregiver’s own attachment history. Entering parenthood with hostile–helpless representation of caregiving puts a parent at risk of relating to their child from the extreme stance of either unbalanced behavioral position or …
