Burnout rates of correctional employees are higher than employees in the general public. The purpose of this study was to identify how occupational factors impact burnout rates among correctional mental health workers. Grounded in the job-demands theoretical model, this study compared burnout rates among mental health staff within county jails and state prisons. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Occupational factors were measured using the Areas of Work life Survey and Pandemic Experience and Perception Survey. Data was analyzed using IBM SSPS software to address multiple a priori directional research questions. Research questions considered how occupational factors …

Negative experiences at work are common at inpatient psychiatric hospitals and can result in burnout. This is especially the case for psychiatric hospital staff, as they are commonly the first and most frequent line of contact for patients in acute psychiatric care. This study provided relevant insight into the factors that influence the experience of burnout among psychiatric hospital staff that care for patients in inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Burnout among mental health professionals (MHPs) has been of interest to scholars and practitioners since the 1970s. For MHPs, burnout leads to less effective client treatment outcomes, increased turnover rate, and decreased overall wellbeing. Despite a significant body of literature on MHP burnout, there is little literature on how MHPs’ implicit motivations (IMs) may influence and contribute to their burnout. Understanding how IMs correlate with burnout may help with self-awareness and specific therapeutic treatments, both of which are important in preventing and alleviating burnout. Physician burnout negatively affects a physician’s ability to provide high quality patient care. Physician burnout indicators include poor behavior, mental decline, depression, narcotics and alcohol abuse, suicidal ideation, and suicide completion.
