A Longitudinal Examination Of Multiple Forms Of Stigma On Minority Stress, Belongingness, And Problematic Alcohol Use, Akanksha Das, Rose Marie Ward, Lauren Haus, Jackson Heitt, Jeffrey Hunger
Health Behavior Research
College students who experience stigma report problematic alcohol use. However, the stigma-health link focuses on one form of stigma, thereby excluding the intersectional oppression of experiencing multiple forms of stigma. The present work has two primary aims: 1) evaluating whether additive intersectional minority stress confers greater problematic alcohol use among multiply-stigmatized college students one year later, and 2) whether that link can be explained by 1) lower belongingness and 2) greater drinking to cope motives. Students (N=427) ranging in stigmatized identities (14.3% zero; 46.4% one; 29.5% two; 9.8% three or more), participated in an annual health survey at two subsequent …
Prioritization Of Scientific Sources Of Water Information: The Effect Knowledge, Beliefs, And Political Identity, Sadie Hundemer
Prioritization Of Scientific Sources Of Water Information: The Effect Knowledge, Beliefs, And Political Identity, Sadie Hundemer
Journal of Applied Communications
Scientists are reported to be more trusted than other information sources; yet, on essential water facts, people sometimes reject what they perceive water scientists to believe in favor of other belief determinants. This study examines the factors that affect the difference in people's stated willingness to reconsider their water beliefs in response to information provided by scientists relative to information provided by other sources. Regression analysis of responses provided by 806 Florida and Georgia residents found water science knowledge to be a consistently strong influencer of the gap in reliance on scientific information providers relative to other sources. This result …

The Cigarillo Purchase Task: A Qualitative Analysis, Amanda J. Quisenberry, Sarah J. Koopman Gonzalez, Elizabeth Klein, Erika Trapl
Health Behavior Research
The cigarillo purchase task is a novel procedure modeled after the cigarette purchase task. This procedure can be used to assess the reinforcing value, or the positive behavioral response, to cigarillo products. Little research has used the cigarillo purchase task and the aim of the current study was to evaluate user’s understanding of and thoughts about a cigarillo purchase task. A convenience sample of young adults ages 21-28 were recruited online to participate in semi-structured interviews about cigarillo and e-cigarette use. The analysis included responses from participants who were current users of cigarillos (n=7) or cigarillos and e-cigarettes (n=8). Audio-recorded …

Barriers To Exercise In A Medical Unit Of Us Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study, Madelyn B. Huhn, Elizabeth A. Kleitz, Namuna Sunar
Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences
Military Reservist healthcare workers must meet physical fitness standards similar to those on active duty. They, however, experience a unique occupational environment as citizen Soldiers. Their civilian careers as healthcare workers and their positions in the military both demand shift work, long hours, and critical response to high stress events. For a small group of Reservists working in civilian healthcare occupations who also serve in medical roles in the military, this exploratory study aimed to describe any perceived barriers to exercise. Although over 60% of respondents to an exercise barriers scale perceived physical and social health as the top benefits …

A Wedge Issue For The 21st Century: The Conditional Effect Of Party Identification For Predicting Feelings Towards Immigrants And Refugees In A Higher Ed Setting, Nicholas Bauroth, Kjersten Nelson
A Wedge Issue For The 21st Century: The Conditional Effect Of Party Identification For Predicting Feelings Towards Immigrants And Refugees In A Higher Ed Setting, Nicholas Bauroth, Kjersten Nelson
Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy
The issue of immigration played an important role in recent U.S. elections. How did the salience of immigration and refugees in the 2016, 2018, and 2020 elections play out amongst young voters? Did increased opportunities to interact with immigrants and refugees affect respondents’ feelings towards these groups, as social contact theory might predict? The analyses here focus on a sample of college students, given that the higher education experience presents conditions for social contact theory to play out. We find that party identification is a key piece of the puzzle – measures of social contact theory operate differently for Democratic …

The Relationship Antecedents Of Smoking (Ras) Scale: A New Scale To Assess Couple-Focused Triggers To Smoke., Erin M. Tooley, Joseph L. Fava, Belinda Borrelli
Health Behavior Research
The purpose of this pilot study is to assess the reliability and construct validity of a measure of relationship-focused antecedents for smoking (RAS). The scale includes both positively-valenced items (e.g.. “I feel like smoking when I am relaxing with my partner”) and negatively-valenced items (e.g., “I feel like smoking when my partner criticizes me”). Participants included 123 individuals who smoke cigarettes with co-habitating smoking (n=63) or non-smoking (n=60) romantic partners. Participants completed the RAS and a series of measures associated with smoking outcomes. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation resulted in a 2-component solution. The RAS showed excellent internal consistency …

Are You Blue? Personality, Communication, And Leadership, Hillary Gleason
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
This workshop will identify participants' dominant personality styles utilizing the True Colors questionnaire developed by Don Lowry in 1978. To that end, there will be a discussion on each color's communication and leadership strengths, weaknesses, and stressors. This is a fun activity that requires movement and most people enjoy. Finally, participants will be paired up with rotating partners and given a departmental chair scenario wherein they need to communicate and lead by utilizing what they have learned about dealing with the personality types of the colors. This exercise will help participants develop a strategic approach to their communication in order …

Emotional Eating And Diet-Related Self-Efficacy, Motivation, And Norms In Adolescents, Tyler Mason, Rachel Dayag, Anna Dolgon-Krutolow, Kathy Lam, Diana Zhang, Vivienne Hazzard, Kathryn Smith
Health Behavior Research
The objective of the current study was to examine the association between emotional eating and self-efficacy, motivation, and social norms for consumption of fruits and vegetables (F/V) and energy-dense, nutrient-poor (EDNP) foods and beverages, as well as interactions with body mass index-z score (BMI-z). Adolescents completed self-report measures of demographics, emotional eating, and dietary health behavior theory constructs. Emotional eating was associated with lower self-efficacy for consumption of F/V and for limiting EDNP foods/beverages; greater motivation for limiting of EDNP foods/beverages; lower social norms for consumption of F/V; and greater social norms for consumption of EDNP foods/beverages. There were no …

Examining Financial Anxiety Focusing On Interactions Between Financial Knowledge And Financial Self-Efficacy, Jae Min Lee, Abed Rabbani, Wookjae Heo
Journal of Financial Therapy
This study examined whether the association between financial knowledge and financial anxiety depends on an individual’s financial self-efficacy by incorporating an interaction term between financial self-efficacy and financial knowledge. The self-efficacy component of the social cognitive theory of self-regulation has been tested using the 2018 National Financial Capability Study dataset. Households with higher financial knowledge and financial self-efficacy had lower levels of financial anxiety. After adding interaction terms of financial knowledge and financial self-efficacy in the model, the relationship between financial knowledge and financial anxiety depended on the levels of financial self-efficacy. Among those with anything less than high financial …

Factor Analysis Of The Financial Strain Index From The Welfare, Children And Families: A Three-City Study, Wave 3, Sally A. Hageman, Ji Hyang Cheon
Journal of Financial Therapy
This paper uses the Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study data. The three cities included are Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio. The total sample size was n = 1,773, and almost all respondents were female caregivers (99%). An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) on the financial strain index was conducted because previous research reporting an EFA is limited. The financial strain construct was examined using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in two Structural Equation Models (SEMs) and a recursive path analysis estimated by ordinary least squares regression. These previous articles provide the theoretical basis for the EFA reported in this …

Internal Family Systems℠ (IFS) therapy is an evidenced-based therapeutic (EBT) tool used to treat various mental health disorders and non-clinical issues. IFS is a promising new approach to building healthy financial behaviors when combined it with financial therapy. During a financial discussion, beliefs, money scripts, and stories around the client’s money history are expressed and are then explored using IFS protocols. IFS provides the financial therapist with a tool that has a high probability of being effective at helping clients access their hidden extreme beliefs, emotions, and stories around money and offers the hope of making changes resulting in lasting …
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Subjective Financial Knowledge With Financial Satisfaction, Jibin Antony, Antony Thomas
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Subjective Financial Knowledge With Financial Satisfaction, Jibin Antony, Antony Thomas
Journal of Financial Therapy
In this study, we differentiate subjective financial knowledge from objective financial knowledge and propose that subjective financial knowledge relates to financial satisfaction both directly as well as indirectly through financial behavior. This study used data obtained from a multi-stage random sample of household financial officers in Kerala, India (n=450). Results showed that subjective financial knowledge significantly relates to household financial officers’ financial satisfaction after controlling for objective financial knowledge and other socioeconomic factors. The relationship between subjective financial knowledge and financial satisfaction could be both direct and indirect through financial behavior. The findings suggest that financial education programs should focus …

The Self-Reflective Financial Therapist: Creating A Financial Genogram, Chelsey L. Holden, Michelle Jeanfreau
The Self-Reflective Financial Therapist: Creating A Financial Genogram, Chelsey L. Holden, Michelle Jeanfreau
Journal of Financial Therapy
The financial genogram offers the therapist an opportunity to explore and unpack his or her own financial journey as a method of self-reflection and self-discovery as well as to become more responsive and understanding toward our clients. This manuscript utilizes an experiential financial therapy framework to make a case for why this self-of-the-financial-therapist process is beneficial, provides steps on how to create the therapist’s financial genogram, and outlines a guide of reflective questions for the therapist to consider as part of the financial genogram process.
The Empowerment Model Of Clinical Supervision And Its Application To Standardization Of Financial Therapy Supervision, Khara Croswaite Brindle
The Empowerment Model Of Clinical Supervision And Its Application To Standardization Of Financial Therapy Supervision, Khara Croswaite Brindle
Journal of Financial Therapy
Financial therapy creates a meaningful bridge between mental health and money, which indicates a complex framework in support of clients and financial therapists alike. Recognizing the newness of financial therapy as a profession, adopting a supervision style for financial therapists that can support the integrity and ethics of the profession, as well as define the growth opportunities of financial therapists called to do this meaningful work, is of utmost importance. The Empowerment Model of Clinical Supervision, with its focus on self of the therapist and empowerment of supervisees, can serve as a template for the standardization of financial therapy supervision.

You Are Your Best Intervention: Utilizing Person-Of-The-Therapist Training In Financial Therapy, Megan A. Mccoy, Stephen Molchan, Kristy L. Archuleta, Ingrid Ponciano
Journal of Financial Therapy
The field of financial therapy recognizes the importance of the therapist's self in facilitating effective client outcomes. Self-exploration involves a comprehensive exploration of the therapist's relationship with money, allowing them to leverage their experiences, financial flashpoints, and money scripts ethically and effectively. By engaging in self-exploration, financial therapists become role models for their clients, inspiring them to embark on their personal growth journeys. However, therapists must exercise caution to avoid projecting their beliefs onto clients. This paper explores how one specific program on the self-of-the-therapist exploration, the person-of-the-therapist model (POTT; Aponte, 1982), can be applied to financial therapy self-work. This …

Special needs estate planning introduces additional complexity, including the need to plan for ongoing caregiving after members of the parents’ generation have passed. This caregiving role is often left to siblings. (Brandy, Burke, Landon, Oertle, 2018). The sibling relationship has not been well-studied in this context, and the relationship dynamic has become more complex as families have changed in recent years (Sanner & Jensen, 2021). The overall goal of the paper is to discuss alternatives for structuring caretaking (e.g., conservatorship, guardianship, supported decision-making) that may restore the triad relationship, i.e., the strongest relationship identified in Family Systems Theory through which …
